Associations between depressed mood and clusters of health risk behaviors.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between depressed mood and clusters of health risk behaviors. METHODS: A nationally representative sample of adolescents (N=15,214) was utilized to construct 10 pseudocontinuous health risk behaviors. Cluster analysis was performed to group adolescents, and subsequent multivariable logistic models were created. RESULTS: Compared to non-risk takers, belonging to risk clusters significantly increased the odds of reporting depressed mood. African Americans in high-risk clusters appeared to be more vulnerable to depressed mood, when compared to remaining ra

Unhealthy weight control behaviors and health risk behaviors in American youth: a repeated cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Unhealthy weight control behaviors (UWCBs) involve weight control strategies to reduce or maintain weight, such as fasting, taking diet pills, and vomiting or taking laxatives. UWCBs in teenagers can escalate into severe health issues such as eating disorders. Understanding the trends of UWCBs and their association with risk behaviors in teenagers is crucial, as early intervention and prevention strategies are pivotal. METHODS: This study utilized eight waves of the youth risk behavior surveillance system (YRBSS) data from 1999 to 2013. Our primary outcome was UWCBs engagement. We

Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic Syndrome and Health Risk Behaviors in U.S. Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Cigarette smoking, vaping, and excessive alcohol consumption are established risk factors for many diseases, but few studies have examined these health-risk behaviors in relation to cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome. This study aims to assess the odds of current smoking, vaping, and heavy drinking by cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome stage and whether the odds vary by sex. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used pooled data on 538,123 adults from the 2021 and 2023 waves of the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey. Multivariable binomial logistic model

Risk behaviors and negative health outcomes for adolescents with late bedtimes.

Late bedtimes in adolescence may be a serious risk factor for later poor health and functional outcomes. The current study sought to extend existing cross sectional data by examining whether late bedtimes in adolescence predicts poor outcomes in young adulthood. Data from wave 2 (1996) and wave 3 (2001-2002) of the nationally representative sample of US youth (National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health) was used to examine the longitudinal relationship between late bedtime, and several risk behaviors and negative health outcomes following 3,843 adolescents into young adulthood. At wave 2

Exposure to political violence and health risk behaviors of Palestinian youth.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to political violence, which pervades many parts of the Middle East and Northern African (MENA) region, is a key potential factor behind the rising rates of risky behaviors among youth, such as drug use, alcohol use, and sexual activity. Theory and empirical work on youth elsewhere suggests that individual characteristics, mental health, and youths' future orientation play a role in such behaviors. It is possible that political violence impacts behavior in part through its effects on these factors, in particular mental health. However, very little is known about the determ

The impact of adolescent traumatic brain injury on health risk behaviors.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with disinhibition, impulsivity, and other sequelae which may make adolescent TBI survivors more likely to engage in health risk behaviors though this has not yet been comprehensively investigated. Extant literature on TBI-related health risk behaviors is limited by a dearth of studies on adolescents, reliance on self-report of TBI, lack of an orthopedic injury (OI) control group, and the fact that TBI's effects on various health risk behavior domains are generally examined separately. The current study clarifies the impact of TBI on health risk behav

Health-Risk Behaviors among Chinese Adults during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

This study analyzed archived data from a previous large-scale survey study on multiple health-risk behaviors among Chinese adults in Hong Kong between 21 June and 31 August 2021. In addition, this study examined participants' perceptions of the risks associated with their behaviors, their attitudes toward adopting healthy behaviors, and the impact of COVID-19 on their health-risk behaviors. A total of 4605 participants who had at least one health-risk behavior were included in the analysis. The results showed that about half of the participants were unaware that non-communicable diseases (NCDs

Health and risk behaviors over time among youth living with HIV.

Health practices and transmission behaviors were examined over time among 25 disabled youth living with HIV (YLH) living in a comprehensive residential care program. YLH were aged 19-24 years (M=23.4 years); 89 per cent of males were gay, bisexual, or transgendered (60% Caucasian); all had physical and mental health problems, as well as substance abuse disorders. YLH were assessed at least four times at 3-month intervals and reported high lifetime rates of sexual and substance-use risk acts. Over four assessments, YLH improved their nutrition and hygiene and decreased their worry about their h

Health risk behavior of youth in foster care.

PROBLEM: Many adolescent health problems are predominantly caused by risk behavior. Foster adolescents have disproportionately poor health; therefore, identification of risk behavior is critical. METHOD: Data from a larger study were analyzed to investigate the health risk behavior of 56 youth in foster care using the Child Health and Illness Profile-Adolescent Edition. FINDINGS: Data indicated that youth in foster care had some increased risk behavior when compared with a normative adolescent population. Younger adolescents and those in relative placement had less risky behavior. Risk behav
