Evidence about art-based interventions for Indigenous people: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Indigenous people experience a unique set of health inequalities and social determinants that can negatively affect their physical health, mental health and wellness. This critical state of affairs is compounded by the limited availability of culturally appropriate care services and treatments for the different groups. In response, increasing numbers of studies are turning their focus to art-based interventions and how these might benefit Indigenous lives. The proposed scoping review aims to map this growing field of research. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This scoping review is based o

Urban Indigenous Communities Transforming Health Care: "Where We Feel Safe and Where Our People Are Working".

Indigenous knowledge and traditional wellness approaches combined with western health services are increasingly being identified as critical for Indigenous Peoples' overall health and wellness in Canada. In this article, we share how an Urban Indigenous Collective Governance Circle led to transformational actions responding to community-voiced priorities, and co-development, delivery, evaluation, and sustainability of urban holistic traditional and western Indigenous diabetes and healthy weight programs. This resulted in increased access to, and ownership and leadership of, strengths-based, eq

The Time to Act Is Now: Strengthening Health Systems Research Capacity, Capability and Knowledge Translation in Remote Australia.

CONTEXT: Communities in remote Australia face poorer health outcomes but are largely recipients of services, programs and policies that are disconnected from local experiences and priorities, with some notable exceptions. Local-level research capacity, capability and knowledge translation that respond to community and service provider priorities are key to strengthening remote health systems. AIM: To explore two questions: (1) What is needed to strengthen health systems research capacity and capability in remote Australia? (2) How can we, as a community of remote health systems researchers, e

Reparations for Indigenous Peoples in the USA and Canada.

Indigenous populations comprise some 400 million people worldwide, hailing from 5,000 descent communities. Although contemporary Indigenous Peoples are exceedingly diverse, they frequently share brutal histories of colonization. These histories of subjugation by outsiders have yielded catastrophic impacts on Indigenous health and well-being, including marked inequities in health status. Specifically, Indigenous communities often suffer from disproportionately high rates of infant and maternal mortality, infectious diseases, parasite loads, diseases of forced acculturation (such as diabetes and

Impact of COVID-19 and its variants on indigenous Brazilian children.

The indigenous population has suffered from the impacts caused by Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. Especially children, who live in a reality of extreme poverty, low level of education and precarious health services close to their communities. Health professionals must look closely at indigenous children so that they can help them deal with the impact that the pandemic has brought with it.

Addressing barriers to dental care: a Tūranga Health and Trinity Koha Dental initiative.

AIM: There is a high level of unmet need for dental care in Aotearoa New Zealand due to the inability of people facing socio-economic disadvantage to afford optimal and timely care. This includes many Māori. METHOD: This paper describes a joint initiative between a philanthropic organisation, Trinity Koha Dental Clinic, and Tūranga Health, an iwi-based health provider based in Gisborne. The service was designed for those with high needs and involved provision of dental care at no cost to the patients (addressing affordability as a barrier). It was also designed to address other barriers to ac

The experiences of health workers using telehealth services for diabetes-related foot complications: a qualitative exploration.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes-related foot disease (DFD) accounts for up to 75% of lower-extremity amputations globally. Rural and remote communities are disproportionately affected by DFD. Telehealth has been advocated as a strategy to improve equity of access to health care in rural and remote communities. Current literature suggests that successful implementation of telehealth requires access to adequate reliable equipment, staff training, and support. A real-time video-based telehealth foot service (TFS) for delivering DFD management has recently been established in a Vascular Surgery and Podiatry

Establishment of an innovative specialist cardiac indigenous outreach service in rural and remote Queensland.

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of mortality in Indigenous Australians. Indigneous Australians present at a younger age and have a greater incidence of cardiac risk including smoking and diabetes than non-Indigenous Australians. Access to specialist health services is an important determinant of health care outcomes for these patients. We describe an innovative and successful for model for providing Outreach Cardiac Specialist services to Indigenous communities in rural and remote locations. The approach involves a step-wise process of a) community engagement, b) delivering recov

Rheumatology Care Among Indigenous Populations.

Indigenous populations have rich traditional care systems but have endured complex interactions with colonial states, and the resulting sociopolitical disparities continue to affect their health outcomes. In this article, the epidemiology and disease burden of rheumatic diseases affecting global Indigenous populations are discussed, along with a presentation of how determinant factors influence the existing landscape for arthritis care delivery. This article proposes how rheumatology care providers can deliver services aligned with Indigenous world views and realities to improve care quality.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander worldviews and cultural safety transforming sexual assault service provision for children and young people.

Child Sexual Assault (CSA) in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities is a complex issue that cannot be understood in isolation from the ongoing impacts of colonial invasion, genocide, assimilation, institutionalised racism and severe socio-economic deprivation. Service responses to CSA are often experienced as racist, culturally, financially and/or geographically inaccessible. A two-day forum, National Yarn Up: Sharing the Wisdoms and Challenges of Young People and Sexual Abuse, was convened by sexual assault services to identify the main practice and policy concerns regarding worki

Preliminary findings from a formative evaluation of the Indigenous peer support specialist train-the-trainer manual: a culturally grounded approach to recovery in American Indian and Alaska Native communities.

INTRODUCTION: American Indians and Alaska Natives (AIANs) are rich in culture, heritage, language, and resilience. Chronic underfunding, limited healthcare infrastructure, and barriers to quality health services contribute to some of the most severe health disparities in mental health and substance use disorders among AIAN populations. METHODS: This formative evaluation aims to document the process and early implementation feedback on an Indigenous Peer Support Specialist Train-the-Trainer Manual (IPSSTTM) designed for use across Indigenous, community, clinical, and university settings.
