The role of primary health care services to better meet the needs of Aboriginal Australians transitioning from prison to the community.

BACKGROUND: Aboriginal Australians are more likely than other Australians to cycle in and out of prison on remand or by serving multiple short sentences-a form of serial incarceration and institutionalisation. This cycle contributes to the over-representation of Aboriginal Australians in prison and higher rates of recidivism. Our research examined how primary health care can better meet the health care and social support needs of Aboriginal Australians transitioning from prison to the community. METHODS: Purposive sampling was used to identify 30 interviewees. Twelve interviews were with Abor

Work for the Prison Service: selected health consequences - investigating the role of personal resources, job demands, work stress, and burnout.

OBJECTIVES: The specific job demands of the Prison Service (PS) may affect the health of officers. The job demands-resources model (JD-R) model was used to design a survey of the consequences of working subject to particular job demands. The aim was to gain an insight into the relationship between job demands, personal resources, occupational stress and burnout and selected health consequence indicators (such as behaviors associated with the consumption of alcohol, stress symptoms). MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 1732 PS officers in Poland were surveyed. The following tools were used as par

Cost-utility analysis of low-intensity case management to increase contact with health services among ex-prisoners in Australia.

OBJECTIVES: The economic burden of incarceration is substantial in Australia. People released from prison are at high risk of poor health and this is an important predictor of recidivism. The 'Passports Study' was a randomised controlled trial of an intervention designed to increase health service utilisation after release from prison. The aim of this study is to conduct a cost-utility analysis of this transitional programme. SETTING: Australia DESIGN: A hybrid simulation model was developed to estimate the changes to total economic costs and effectiveness expressed as quality-adjusted life-y

Mental Health and Service Impacts During COVID-19 for Individuals with Serious Mental Illnesses Recently Released from Prison and Jail.

Individuals recently released from jail or prison with serious mental illnesses may be vulnerable to the coronavirus pandemic. This study aims to understand how they experienced the pandemic during initial stay-at-home orders in New York City. Structured surveys and in-depth semi-structured interviews examined the impact of the pandemic on participants. Survey responses are presented as percentages. Thematic analysis was used to code and analyze in-depth interviews. All participants (N = 5) knew about the coronavirus pandemic, and most took steps to minimize risk. Participants experienced chan

Substance use frequency, device-sharing, and used substances in Canadian prisons: results from Correctional Service Canada's National Health Survey.

PURPOSE: Using data from Correctional Service Canada's 2022 National Health Survey, this study aims to estimate the frequency of substance use and related behaviours in federal Canadian prisons. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Participants (N = 413) were incarcerated persons who understood French or English, had been continuously incarcerated for six months before the study's launch, consented to participate and reported substance use within the previous six months while in federal prison. Participants completed a self-report questionnaire about institutional substance use. FINDINGS: Among peop

Addressing the complex substance use and mental health needs of people leaving prison: Insights from developing a national inventory of services in Canada.

Internationally, transitions from prison to the community are often precarious experiences for people who are living with substance use and mental health concerns. In Canada, a continuing opioid overdose crisis and overlapping challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic have generated urgency for scaling up community-based services that can meet the complex substance use and mental health needs of people leaving prison. In this commentary, we reflect on our experience with and knowledge gained by developing a national inventory of substance use and mental health services for criminal justice-i

Contact with Mental Health Services After Acute Care for Self-Harm Among Adults Released from Prison: A Prospective Data Linkage Study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the care pathway and rate and predictors of mental health care contact within seven days of discharge from acute care following self-harm. METHOD: In a representative cohort of adults released from prisons in Queensland, Australia, we probabilistically linked person-level, statewide ambulance, emergency department, and hospital records, both prospectively and retrospectively, and community mental health service and Medicare records prospectively, to baseline survey data. We fit multivariate modified log-linked Poisson regression models to examine the association betwee

Co-production and adaptation of a prison-based problem-solving workbook to support the mental health of patients housed within a medium- and low-secure forensic service.

INTRODUCTION: Problem-solving skills (PSS) help to provide a systematic approach to dealing with and managing complex problems. The overall aim of this study was to assess the acceptability and feasibility of developing and adapting a prison-based PSS  workbook for adults within a medium- and low-secure hospital. METHOD: We used the Medical Research Council framework in our participatory mixed methods study incorporating an adapted survey (to identify what types of problems people experience in secure hospitals), a series of three interactive workshops (to co-produce two case study examples f

Access to services for mental ill-health and substance use among people released from prison in Scotland (RELEASE): Retrospective observational cohort study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Mental health and substance use (MH/SU) problems are highly prevalent among the prison population. However, early and preventative post-imprisonment care appears to be insufficient to meet the MH/SU needs of people released. This is demonstrated by elevated rates of MH/SU-related emergency care and deaths attributable to alcohol, drugs and suicide. Studies examining post-imprisonment healthcare contacts across community, outpatient, inpatient and emergency services for MH/SU are required to address this issue. This protocol paper describes the outcome of data linkage and details

From placement to prison revisited: Do mental health services disrupt the delinquency pipeline among Latino, African American and Caucasian youth in the child welfare system?

Racial and ethnic disparities in delinquency among child welfare-involved youth are well documented. However, less is known about the mechanisms through which these disparities occur. This study explores the extent to which sets of variables predict the occurrence of juvenile delinquency and whether race/ethnicity moderates the strength of the relationships between (1) social, emotional, and behavioral (SEB) problems and delinquency and (2) mental health service use and delinquency. We used a nationally representative sample of 727 African American, Caucasian, and Latino youth between the ages

'You've Just Got to Keep Pestering': Barriers and Enablers of Attaining Continuity of Hepatitis C Care for People Transitioning Between Prison and Community Health Services in South-East Queensland, Australia.

Highly effective direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapies for hepatitis C (HCV) have been available in Australian prisons since 2016. To address treatment interruption following release from prisons, the Queensland Injector's Health Network (QuIHN) launched a Prison Transition Service (PTS) in south-east Queensland, Australia. Presently, the factors associated with continuity of post-release HCV care are poorly understood. The objective of this qualitative study was to explore the barriers and facilitators to HCV treatment among people recently released from prisons among PTS clients and stakeh

Criminal Justice Involvement after Release from Prison following Exposure to Community Mental Health Services among People Who Use Illicit Drugs and Have Mental Illness: a Systematic Review.

Illicit drug use and mental illness are common among people in prison and are associated with higher rates of reoffending and reimprisonment. We conducted a systematic review, searching MEDLINE, Embase, and PsycINFO to January 10, 2022, for studies reporting criminal justice involvement following exposure to community mental health services among people released from jail or prison who use illicit drugs and have mental illness. Our search identified 6954 studies; 13 were eligible for inclusion in this review. Studies were separated into three broad categories based on community mental health s

In Sickness and in Prison: The Case for Removing the Medicare Exclusion for Australian Prisoners.

Many current and former prisoners experience significantly higher rates of physical and mental health problems than others in the community, and are among the most marginalised and disadvantaged people in society. This article argues that granting prison health services an exemption under s 19(2) of the Health Insurance Act 1973 Cth would make the Medicare Benefits Schedule and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme-funded services available to prisoners who meet the eligibility criteria. Australian prisoners would then receive a level of care at least equivalent to that offered by community healt

Prisoners' access to HIV services in southern Malawi: a cross-sectional mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) among prisoners remains high in many countries, especially in Africa, despite a global decrease in HIV incidence. Programs to reach incarcerated populations with HIV services have been implemented in Malawi, but the success of these initiatives is uncertain. We explored which challenges prisoners face in receiving essential HIV services and whether HIV risk behavior is prevalent in prisons. METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods (qualitative and quantitative), cross-sectional study in 2018 in six prisons in Southern Malawi, two l

Meeting the mental health needs of women in Irish prisons: A qualitative multi-stakeholder perspective to inform healthcare practice.

The rate of female incarceration to prison has grown by approximately 60% since the year 2000. Mental ill-health is over-represented in the female carceral population and the experiences of women in the context of prison mental health services are largely invisible in empirical literature. The aim of this study was to highlight the under-represented narratives of women in prison and prison personnel to inform nursing practice and prison mental health service planning and delivery. A qualitative approach was used underpinned by institutional ethnography. Data were collected across two (n = 2) f

Prisoners' perceptions of the healthcare service: A qualitative study.

It is recognized that the health of those in prison is poorer than the general population. The objective of this research is to understand the perceptions of the prisoners of the health care that they received at a district level prison in Thailand. We conducted a qualitative study, using in-depth interviews. Content analysis was used for data analysis. The participants were 13 prisoners. The findings reveal the prisoners have positive attitudes toward health services. They think that they are receiving the same standard of care as the general population. However, they are concerned about gett

Factors Associated with Accessing Prison Dental Services in Scotland: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: Prisoners have poorer dental health than non-prison populations. It is known that the prison environment can promote health and thus, policies, including access to dental care, are in place to promote health during imprisonment. Aim: Our aim was to conduct an oral health and psychosocial needs survey to identify the factors associated with accessing prison dental services in Scotland. Methods: A convenience sample of offenders from a male maximum security prison, a women's prison, and a young offenders' institution was gathered. A questionnaire examined the demography, prison exper
