The aim of this systematic review was to identify the issues related to the vulnerability and psychosocial risk factors of people who identify as transgender. A search of relevant electronic databases from 2007 to 2017 was conducted. Included studies involved transgender people, vulnerability, and risk factors. Following the application of rigorous inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 21 papers were considered suitable for the review. The identified themes included sexual risks, substance use, psychological vulnerability risk factors, and protective factors and behaviors. Nurses are in

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people have unique healthcare needs. While all LGBT people are at an increased risk for mental health and substance abuse disorders, certain health conditions vary by group. Overweight and obesity are more common in lesbian and bisexual women, whereas sexual minority men are at increased risk for infections such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and syphilis. Breast, cervical, and prostate cancer screening should be offered to all LGBT individuals according to national guidelines and with consideration of a transgender person's natal and surgi

Swaziland has among the highest national adult HIV prevalence globally. There is limited knowledge of HIV vulnerabilities and prevention engagement among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) persons in the context of Swaziland's criminalization of consensual same-sex practices. This study explored social processes of marginalization to assess how they could potentiate HIV vulnerabilities and limit engagement in HIV prevention services. Additionally, we assessed positive change to better understand existing strategies employed by LGBT persons to challenge these HIV prevention barriers.

Measuring patient satisfaction (i.e., patients' subjective evaluation of health care services received) is increasingly important in assessing health care outcomes because of the current emphasis on greater partnership between providers (therapist, doctor, staff) and consumers (patients) in health care. In care of transgender persons, achieving good patient satisfaction is particularly challenging given the primary role mental health professionals play as arbiters of who has access to sex reassignment and when such candidates are ready. Dependence on a mental health professional in this "gate-

In the last several years, demand for transgender care from gynecologists has increased significantly. Transgender people comprise a diverse group who do not identify with the sex they were assigned at birth. Worldwide, it is estimated that 25 million people identify as transgender. Some undergo hormonal and/or surgical treatment aiming to feminize or masculinize their bodies. Cross-sex hormone treatment for transgender women-individuals assigned as male at birth who identify themselves as women-includes exogenous estrogen and/or progestin administration in combination with anti-androgens, whe

BACKGROUND: The narratives of trans women dominate the discourse on 'trans rights' in India, thereby marginalizing transmasculine identities that continue to be 'invisible' in public perception. Trans men are often neglected in gynecological and reproductive healthcare, including gender-affirming services, despite their distinct sexual and reproductive requirements. Notwithstanding substantial progress in recognizing and protecting women's reproductive rights, Indian judiciaries have persistently overlooked the reproductive and health rights of transgender individuals. The recent enactment of

Just 13% of nurses feel prepared to meet the needs of their transgender patients, according to a survey by the RCN. The UK-wide research involving more than 1,200 nursing staff found this could be due to lack of training, despite more than three quarters encountering transgender patients in their work, and 56% caring for them directly.

Transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals need access to diverse health services in welcoming, affirming, clinically appropriate, and culturally sensitive environments. Nursing students often feel underprepared due to limited knowledge and attitudes about transgender and gender nonconforming issues, and despite growing interest, research on their care remains limited. This study explores the perspectives of nursing students nearing graduation on providing care to transgender and gender-nonconforming persons. We conducted a qualitative descriptive exploratory study at the Fondazione IRCC

BACKGROUND: Transgender women have multiple disparities globally, including social rejection and stigma, HIV infection and untreated mental health problems. However, few data on transgender women are available in China. Therefore, this study aimed to explore transgender women's experiences on gender identity, disclosure, discrimination, transgender-specific medical care, and perceptions of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STI) risk in China.
METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted in Nanjing and Suzhou city, China in 2018. Key informant interviews (n = 14) and focus group discussio

Informed consent as a model of care has evolved as an alternative to the standard model of care recommended by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health's Standards of Care, version 7, which emphasizes the importance of mental health professionals' role in diagnosing gender dysphoria and in assessing the appropriateness and readiness for gender-affirming medical treatments. By contrast, the informed consent model for gender-affirming treatment seeks to acknowledge and better support the patient's right to, and capability for, personal autonomy in choosing care options without t

The preventive health care needs of transgender persons are nearly identical to the rest of the population. Special consideration should be given, however, to the impact of gender-affirming hormone regimens and surgical care on preventive screenings. Providers should integrate a more comprehensive view of health when caring for transgender persons and address the impact of social determinants and other barriers to accessing affirming, inclusive health care. In individual interactions, providers must consider the unique impact that a gender identity and expression different from the assigned ge

Thirty years ago, the transgender child would have made no sense to the general public, nor to young people. Today, children and adolescents declare themselves transgender, the National Health Service diagnoses 'gender dysphoria', and laws and policy are developed which uphold young people's 'choice' to transition and to authorize stages at which medical intervention is permissible and desirable. The figure of the 'transgender child' presumed by medicine and law is not a naturally occurring category of person external to medical diagnosis and legal protection. Medicine and law construct the 't

It has been estimated that 0.2% of the UK population identifies as transgender. For those who seek gender reassignment, the pathway can involve the expertise of multiple disciplines, including primary care, psychology, endocrinology and speech and language therapy. A small but significant number of the transgender population will also elect to undergo gender-affirming genital surgery in order to achieve gender congruence. In the UK, very few specialist centres provide genital gender-affirming surgery for trans-men and women. The population accessing these services spans the entire UK, and with

The lack of access to gender-affirming surgery represents a significant unmet health care need within the transgender community, frequently resulting in depression and self-destructive behavior. While some transgender people may have access to gender reassignment surgery (GRS), an overwhelming majority cannot afford facial feminization surgery (FFS). The former may be covered as a "medical necessity," but FFS is considered "cosmetic" and excluded from insurance coverage. This demarcation between "necessity" and "cosmetic" in transgender health care based on specific body parts is in direct opp

Transgender medicine presents a particular challenge for the development of evidence-based guidelines, due to limitations in the available body of evidence as well as the exclusion of gender identity data from most public health surveillance activities. The guidelines that have been published are often based on expert opinion, small studies, and data gathered outside the US. The existence of guidelines, however, helps legitimate the need for gender-affirming medical and surgical interventions. Research conducted on transgender populations should be grounded in gender-affirming methodologies an
