Bilateral sudden sensorineural hearing loss following non-otologic surgery.

Hearing loss as a complication of non-otological surgery is rare. The majority of described cases have followed cardiac bypass surgery. To date there have been only 25 reported cases of non-otological surgery associated hearing loss (NOSAHL) which have not involved cardiopulmonary bypass. Only two cases of bilateral NOSAHL have been previously described, and neither resulted in permanent severe bilateral hearing deficit. We describe a case of permanent bilateral severe hearing loss following metatarsal pinning in a patient with pre-existing non-operated otosclerosis.

Sudden bilateral profound hearing loss resulting from meningeal carcinomatosis.

SBPHL is a rare manifestation of hearing loss. Patients with SBPHL should have a thorough evaluation for meningeal carcinomatosis as the cause, including a complete neurologic evaluation, CT scan, and, probably, MRI. If MC is highly suspected, an LP is necessary. Because the diagnosis of MC can be confirmed only by the presence of malignant cells in the CSF, multiple LPs may be necessary to find them. Although MC should be strongly considered in the differential diagnosis of SBPHL, MC should also be considered with other patterns of eighth cranial nerve involvement, especially in patients with

Steroid-responsive bilateral sensorineural hearing loss and immune complexes.

We have recognized in recent years that some cases with idiopathic bilateral sensorineural hearing loss which showed acute progression in either ear responded to steroid and that the improved hearing level could be maintained by longterm administration of steroid only. Forty cases of bilateral sensorineural hearing loss were selected for study. In most of these cases hearing deterioration of either ear was confirmed by audiometry. Eight of fifteen cases with marked improvement have been proved to respond to steroid treatment. These eight cases include three cases with syphilitic deafness and o

Hearing aid benefits in children with mild bilateral hearing loss: AUDIO-INFANS study.

OBJECTIVES: There is a lack of consensus regarding the definition, consequences, and management of mild bilateral hearing loss in children. The objective of this study is to analyze the benefit of hearing aids in children with mild bilateral hearing loss by evaluating their functional hearing. METHODS: This retrospective study included 57 children with mild bilateral hearing loss between 20 dB HL and 40 dB HL. Pure tone and speech audiometry thresholds were assessed with and without hearing aids. Two groups were subsequently formed: group E with an effective use of hearing aids (>10 h/day), a

[A case of meningeal carcinomatosis presenting with bilateral hearing loss].

We report the case of a 63-year-old male who developed rapidly progressive bilateral deafness. Two months later he became stuporous, and was transferred to our hospital. The patient's MRI demonstrated bilateral hypertrophic VII-VIII cranial nerve roots that were well enhanced. Gradually, the patient's condition worsened, and he died on the 12th day after admission. Autopsy revealed meningeal carcinomatosis with poorly differentiated gastric adenocarcinoma. White firm masses of the bilateral seventh and eighth bilateral cranial nerve roots were found at autopsy, which were found to be metastase

[A case of brain stem infarction with bilateral hearing loss].

The study case was a 66-year-old man who had bilateral neurosensory hearing impairment due to brain stem infarctions. He noticed mild hearing loss, frequent vertigo and tinnitus. About one month later, his hearing took a sudden turn for the worse, and he suffered from dysarthria, dysphagea and abasia. Neurological examination revealed pseudobulber palsy, left hemiparesis, cerebeller ataxia, disturbance of pain and temperature sensation on the right face and left side of the body. Brain stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) showed a delayed small wave V with the abscence of previous waves on

Bilateral hearing loss as a sequel to unilateral acoustic trauma.

Within the framework of a study on the natural history of acoustic trauma, over 600 soldiers were examined. A higher rate of bilateral acoustic trauma was observed among soldiers with longer service. Comparison between unilateral and bilateral acoustic trauma showed a greater severity of damage in both ears of the latter group. Comparison of the progression of the damage in the same persons on two consecutive examinations suggested the same trend. It is suggested that bilateral acoustic trauma may be a later and more severe stage in some types of noise-induced damage.

[Bilaterality in acute low-tone sensorineural hearing loss].

Bilaterality in acute low-tone sensorineural hearing loss (ALHL) is more generally recognized than that in idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss. Subjects were 274 patients diagnosed with ALHL based on criteria of a study group of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare of Japan, i.e., total of 3 low tone hearing of 70dB or more and, a total of 3 high-tone hearing of 60dB or less, and treated at the departments of otolaryngology at Yamanashi University and Suwa Central Hospital. ALHL involving bilateral ears symptoms and/or bilateral hearing impairment conforming to diagnostic criteri

Bilateral adhesive bone conduction devices in patients with congenital bilateral conductive hearing loss.

PURPOSE: This study aims to characterize the hearing benefits and sound localization accuracy of bilateral adhesive bone conduction devices (aBCDs) compared to unilateral devices in patients with congenital bilateral conductive hearing loss (BCHL). METHODS: Sixteen children and adolescents with congenital BCHL were enrolled and tested under four listening conditions: (1) unaided, (2) R aided: aided with a right-side aBCD, (3) L aided: aided with a left-side aBCD, and (4) B aided: aided with aBCDs on both sides. The sound field hearing threshold (SFHT, in dB hearing level [HL]) and the word re

Bilateral superior semicircular canal dehiscence: bilateral conductive hearing loss with subtle vestibular symptoms.

Superior semicircular canal dehiscence is caused by a bone defect on the roof of the superior semicircular canal. The estimated prevalence when unilateral varies between 0.4% and 0.7% and is still unknown when bilateral. Patients may present with audiologic and vestibular symptoms that may vary from asymptomatic to disabling. We report a case of a 72-year-old Caucasian woman presented to otolaryngology department reporting imbalance, bilateral pulsatile tinnitus, hypoacusis while being very sensitive to certain sounds. Physical examination was unremarkable, except for the Rinne test that was n

Bilateral sudden sensorineural hearing loss in patient with Behçet disease.

Bacckground: Approximately 80% to 85% of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is idiopathic, but immune-mediated mechanisms are thought to be involved. Behçet disease is an autoinflammatory vasculitis that may involve vessels of the inner ear. It can cause sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and an increased risk of SSNHL. Study Sample: We report a 21-year-old man who was diagnosed with Behçet disease in childhood and presented to our clinic with a 10-day history of abrupt hearing deterioration in both ears. Pure-tone audiometry showed severe to profound bilateral SNHL. Results: Oral predni

A sudden bilateral hearing loss caused by inner ear hemorrhage.

INTRODUCTION: Labyrinthine hemorrhage is a rare cause of sudden deafness and generally concerns only on one side. CASE SUMMARY: An 84-year-old man with a past medical history of myelomonocytic chronic leukemia (CMML) suffered from sudden bilateral hearing loss associated with vertigo. The audiogram revealed a left cophosis and a right profound deafness. Videonystagmography showed a left vestibular deficit. The MRI showed a spontaneous strong T1 weighted signal in the left and right labyrinths, corresponding to a bilateral inner ear hemorrhage (IEH). Dizziness resolved rapidly following vestib

Improvement of sudden bilateral hearing loss after vertebral artery stenting.

Bilateral deafness is a rare but possible symptom of vertebrobasilar ischemia. We report a case of sudden bilateral sensorineural hearing loss caused by bilateral vertebral artery (VA) occlusion which dramatically improved after stenting. A 54-year-old man was admitted with sudden onset of bilateral deafness, vertigo, and drowsy mental status. Brain diffusion-weighted MRI showed acute infarction involving both the posterior inferior cerebellar artery and left posterior cerebral artery territory. Cerebral angiography showed bilateral distal VA occlusion, and emergency intracranial stenting was

A 45-year-old woman with reversible bilateral hearing loss.

A 45-year-old woman complained of a progressive 2-month history of bilateral hearing impairment and diplopia on upward gaze. She had a history of a recurrent pineal region ganglioglioma with repeated tumor excision, adjuvant radiotherapy, and a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt performed 12 years prior. Subsequent imaging studies 6 years ago showed a pineal region cyst with progressive increase in size and a Rickham reservoir (Codman; Johnson & Johnson, Raynham, MA) was placed for percutaneous cyst fluid aspiration. The size of the cystic lesion remained static upon follow-up CT scans for several ye

Clinical findings in Menière's disease with bilateral fluctuant hearing loss.

Our department conducted an examination of the clinical characteristics of Menière's disease with bilateral fluctuant hearing loss, using data obtained in a survey involving sixteen institutes associated with the Vestibular Disorder Research Committee, Japan. A total of 480 cases were surveyed, of which 204 showed normal hearing in the second ear, and were thus classified as unilateral Menière's disease, or Menière's disease with unilateral involvement; 135 cases showed fluctuating cochlear symptoms in the second ear, and were therefore classified as Menière's disease with bilateral fluctuant

Meningeal carcinomatosis producing bilateral sudden hearing loss: a case report.

Meningeal carcinomatosis is characterized by diffuse infiltration of the leptomeninges by metastatic cancer in patients usually with a previous history of malignancy. Primary tumors are usually adenocarcinomas of the breast or lung, or malignant melanoma. Meningeal carcinomatosis can present with headache and/or a variety of cranial neuropathies. We report a case of meningeal carcinomatosis presenting as a complete, bilateral, sudden hearing loss without other cranial nerve findings--a previously unreported presentation. Our patient also exhibited an unusual primary tumor site (esophagus) and

Unilateral and Bilateral Hearing Aids for Age-Related Hearing Loss: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is ubiquitous and is characterized as bilateral symmetrical sensorineural and mild to moderate in degree. When left untreated, significant impacts arise in domains including communication, psychosocial, cognitive and physical health. Data demonstrating the effectiveness of unilateral or bilateral hearing aids (HAs) as the standard treatment are lacking. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether bilateral HAs provide more benefit compared with a unilateral HA. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This single-blinded parallel-group randomized clinical trial was
