OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The impact of childhood conductive HL (CHL) on development of auditory function has long been debated. The present study was conducted to define and compare the consequences of CHL and cochlear ablation (CA) in young and adult animals, using 2-deoxyglucose (2-DG) uptake as a measure of metabolic activity. It was hypothesized that, for both ages, CHL would result in a decrease in activity in the major ascending central auditory system pathway of the manipulated ear, but that this decrease would be significantly less than that observed with CA.
STUDY DESIGN: Sham-controll

We present a 50-year-old man who was investigated for sensorineural hearing loss. On MRI of the brain superficial siderosis of the central nervous system was seen, while MRI of the spine revealed an ependymoma of the cauda equina. This case illustrates the importance of performing T2-weighted imaging of the brain and posterior fossa when sensorineural hearing loss is present. Spine imaging is mandatory when superficial siderosis of the brain is diagnosed without identification of a bleeding source in the brain.

Hearing loss is the third leading cause of years lived with disability. Approximately 1.4 billion people have hearing loss, of which 80% reside in low- and middle-income countries with limited audiology and otolaryngology care available to them. The objective of this study was to estimate period prevalence of hearing loss and audiogram patterns of patients attending an otolaryngology clinic in North Central Nigeria. A 10-year retrospective cohort study was carried out analyzing 1507 patient records of pure tone audiograms of patients at the otolaryngology clinic at Jos University Teaching Hosp

We report the case of a 43-year-old female patient who presented with symptoms of abnormal behavior, hearing loss, ataxic gait, central hyperventilation which had appeared over the course of one month. Brain MRI showed no abnormal findings in DWI and EEG did not indicate periodic synchronous discharge (PSD). Over the course of the same month, she also presented with central apnea that intermittently showed spontaneous improvement and reappearance. Cerebrospinal fluid 14-3-3 protein tested negative and there was no family history, but an abnormal prion protein was detected in the cerebrospinal

Superficial siderosis of the central nervous system (CNS) is a rare but ultimately fatal disorder characterized by progressive hearing loss, ataxia, and dementia. Symptoms are caused by the deposition of hemosiderin in the CNS as a result of recurrent or persistent extravasation of blood into the cerebrospinal fluid. Sites most commonly involved include the cerebellum, brain stem, and eighth cranial nerve. In the past, diagnosis was most often made at autopsy, and this may account for the lack of reported cases in the otolaryngologic literature and the presumed rarity of the disorder. Now, dia

Conductive hearing loss (CHL) restricts auditory input to an intact peripheral auditory system. Effects of deprivation on the central auditory system (CAS) have been debated, although a number of studies support the hypothesis that CHL can cause modification of CAS structure and function. The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that unilateral CHL results in a decrease in cytochrome oxidase (CO) activity in CAS nuclei that receive major afferent input from the affected ear. Gerbils at postnatal day 12 (P21) or 6-8 weeks underwent left unilateral CHL (malleus removal), cochlear ab

Between 3 and 25 months of age, light and electron microscopic features of principal neurons in the central nucleus of the inferior colliculus of the C57BL/6 mouse were quantitated. This mouse strain has a genetic defect producing progressive sensorineural hearing loss which starts during young adulthood (2 months of age) with high-frequency sounds. During the second year of life, hearing is severely impaired, progressively involving all frequencies. The hearing loss was documented in the present study by auditory brainstem recordings of the mice at various ages. The cochleas from many of the

Temporary conductive hearing loss (CHL) can lead to hearing impairments that persist beyond resolution of the CHL. In particular, unilateral CHL leads to deficits in auditory skills that rely on binaural input (e.g., spatial hearing). Here, we asked whether single neurons in the auditory midbrain, which integrate acoustic inputs from the two ears, are altered by a temporary CHL. We introduced 6 weeks of unilateral CHL to young adult chinchillas via foam earplug. Following CHL removal and restoration of peripheral input, single-unit recordings from inferior colliculus (ICC) neurons revealed the

OBJECTIVES: Asymmetric or unilateral hearing loss (AHL) may cause irreversible changes in the processing of acoustic signals in the auditory system. We aim to provide a comprehensive view of the auditory processing abilities for subjects with acquired AHL, and to examine the influence of AHL on speech perception under difficult conditions, and on auditory temporal and intensity processing.
DESIGN: We examined peripheral and central auditory functions for 25 subjects with AHL resulting from vestibular schwannoma, and compared them to those from 24 normal-hearing controls that were matched with

Objective The radiologic evaluation of patients with hearing loss includes computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to highlight temporal bone and cochlear nerve anatomy. The central auditory pathways are often not studied for routine clinical evaluation. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is an emerging MRI-based modality that can reveal microstructural changes in white matter. In this systematic review, we summarize the value of DTI in the detection of structural changes of the central auditory pathways in patients with sensorineural hearing loss. Data Sources PubMed, Embase, and

The central auditory brainstem provides an efferent projection known as the medial olivocochlear (MOC) system, which regulates the cochlear amplifier and mediates protection on exposure to loud sound. It arises from neurons of the ventral nucleus of the trapezoid body (VNTB), so control of neuronal excitability in this pathway has profound effects on hearing. The VNTB and the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body are the only sites of expression for the Kv2.2 voltage-gated potassium channel in the auditory brainstem, consistent with a specialized function of these channels. In the absence of un

Two cases of progressive bilateral hearing loss associated with superficial hemosiderosis of the central nervous system are reported. This is a rare disease caused by repetitive hemorrhage in subarachnoid spaces with hemosiderin deposits on the brain surface and cranial nerves. MRI provided the etiologic diagnosis in both cases based on typical low-density signals from the brain, the brainstem, and the cerebellar surfaces on T1 and T2 sequences. In one case a fourth ventricle ependymoma, which was the probable cause of hemosiderosis, was also discovered. Based on a literature review, we discus

Reductions in sound-evoked activity in the auditory nerve due to hearing loss have been shown to cause pathological changes in central auditory structures. Hearing loss due strictly to the aging process are less well documented. In this study of CBA/CaH mice, we provide evidence for age-related pathology in the endbulb of Held, a large axosomatic ending arising from myelinated auditory nerve fibers. Endbulbs are known to be involved in the processing of temporal cues used for sound localization and speech comprehension. Hearing thresholds as measured by auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresh

Long-term, passive, continuous exposure of mature animals to moderate-level, band-limited sounds can profoundly decrease neural activity in primary auditory cortex (AI) to sounds in the exposure frequency range, and increase activity to sounds outside the exposure range. The resulting reorganization of the AI tonotopic map resembles that following a restricted lesion of the cochlear epithelium. Here we show qualitatively similar effects of passive exposure when it is limited to 12 h/day, simulating a noisy-work/quiet-living environment, albeit at substantially lower intensity levels (68 dB SPL

Temporal modulations are ubiquitous features of sound signals that are important for auditory perception. The perception of temporal modulations, or temporal processing, is known to decline with aging and hearing loss and negatively impact auditory perception in general and speech recognition specifically. However, neurophysiological literature also provides evidence of exaggerated or enhanced encoding of specifically temporal envelopes in aging and hearing loss, which may arise from changes in inhibitory neurotransmission and neuronal hyperactivity. This review paper describes the physiologic

Sound information is transduced from mechanical vibration to electrical signals in the cochlea, conveyed to and further processed in the brain to form auditory perception. During the process, spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) are the key cells that connect the peripheral and central auditory systems by receiving information from hair cells in the cochlea and transmitting it to neurons of the cochlear nucleus (CN). Decades of research in the cochlea greatly improved our understanding of SGN function under normal and pathological conditions, especially about the roles of different subtypes of SGNs

Aging is associated with functional and morphological changes in the sensory organs, including the auditory system. Mitophagy, a process that regulates the turnover of dysfunctional mitochondria, is impaired with aging. This study aimed to investigate the effect of aging on mitophagy in the central auditory system using an age-related hearing loss mouse model. C57BL/6J mice were divided into the following four groups based on age: 1-, 6-, 12-, and 18-month groups. The hearing ability was evaluated by measuring the auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds. The mitochondrial DNA damage level

Excessive occupational exposure to noise results in a well-recognized occupational hearing loss which is prevalent in many workplaces and now it is taken as a global problem. Therefore, this study aims to assess the prevalence of noise-induced hearing loss and associated factors among workers in the Bishoftu Central Air Base in Ethiopia. An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 260 central air base workers through face-to-face interviews, an environment noise survey, and an audiometric test for data collection. Data were entered by Epi-data version 3.1 and SPSS was used
