Questionnaires in Patients with Unilateral Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we evaluated the prognostic value of the Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) and the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) in patients with unilateral sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In total, 101 patients with unilateral SSNHL (44 women, 57 men), who were admitted and treated at our institution between December 2012 and June 2014, were included in the study. All patients completed the questionnaires for DHI and THI during their admission and were treated with bed rest and oral methylprednisolone (1 mg/kg, which was eventually tapered). O

Sudden onset unilateral sensorineural hearing loss after rabies vaccination.

A 33-year-old man developed profound sudden onset right-sided hearing loss with tinnitus and vertigo, within 24 h of pretravel rabies vaccination. There was no history of upper respiratory tract infection, systemic illness, ototoxic medication or trauma, and normal otoscopic examination. Pure tone audiograms (PTA) demonstrated right-sided sensorineural hearing loss (thresholds 90-100 dB) and normal left-sided hearing. MRI internal acoustic meatus, viral serology (hepatitis B, C, HIV and cytomegalovirus) and syphilis screen were normal. Positive Epstein-Barr virus IgG, viral capsid IgG and anti

[Sudden unilateral sensorineural hearing loss after carbon monoxide intoxication].

A case of unilateral sensorineural hearing loss of the left ear after carbon monoxide intoxication was presented. The diagnosis was based upon an interview, medical examinations and audiometric investigations. Results of diagnostic evaluations, clinical presentation and treatment were discussed. Hearing improvement was obtained after 6 days of treatment and normal hearing returned after 14 days. Patients who suffer from CO intoxication are at risk of hearing impairment, therefore, there is a need for audiometric follow up in these patients.

[Diagnostic management of unilateral sensorineural hearing loss in adults].

Adult unilateral hearing loss is a frequent complaint observed by the E.N.T. specialist. With a pure tone audiometry, we can recognize a conductive hearing loss from a sensorineural hearing loss. In case of a conductive hearing loss, a temporal bone computed tomography is the first choice procedure. For the sensorineural hearing loss, the standard screening test is the brainstem evoked response auditory (BERA), which can be completed by a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The BERA have a false negatives level of 2 to 15% according to the studies, which means that a checking must be done 6 mont

Binaural processing after corrected congenital unilateral conductive hearing loss.

Binaural processing was measured in a series of tests in patients before and after surgery to correct congenital unilateral conductive hearing losses. Data are presented from 19 patients between the ages of 6 and 33 years that had an abnormal external and/or middle ear on one side but normal hearing in the other ear. Surgery improved thresholds an average of 36 dB HL (from 56 to 20 dB HL). Patients were tested pre- and postoperatively for interaural temporal difference limens, alternate and simultaneous loudness balances, sound localization, binaural detection thresholds, and speech perception

Unilateral hearing loss following rubella infection in an adult.

A 36-year-old man was admitted to our university hospital, complaining of acute hearing loss of the right ear, which was his only hearing ear. He had developed complete deafness due to mumps in the left ear at the age of 26. Before admission, he had been diagnosed as having rubella infection. He noticed hearing loss in the right ear two days after disappearance of macular rash. Headache, nausea and vertigo were not present. Three weeks after the onset of hearing loss, he was admitted to our university hospital. Pure tone audiometry revealed sensorineural hearing loss; a mild ascending audiomet

Auditory neuronal sizes after a unilateral conductive hearing loss.

The left external auditory meatus was removed in 4-day-old CBA/J mice; after killing at 45 days, serial sections of the cochleae and brain stem were prepared. From these, the cross-sectional areas of spiral ganglion neurons and of 14 auditory brain stem neuronal types were measured, using a total of 210 neurons of each of the 15 types from both the right and left sides. Nine neuronal types were significantly smaller (P less than 0.01) on the left side: spiral ganglion neurons; globular, small spherical, large spherical, octopus, multipolar, and granule cells of the ventral cochlear nucleus; Pu

Endoscopic findings and long-term hearing results for pediatric unilateral conductive hearing loss.

OBJECTIVES: Analyze reasons for unilateral conductive hearing loss (CHL) with unknown etiology in children. INTRODUCTION: Unilateral conductive hearing loss (HL) without known etiology can be undiagnosed despite of hearing screening programs. It can be difficult to find the reason for HL and to make a treatment plan. Middle ear endoscopy gives hard-evidence diagnosis and basis for an individual treatment plan. METHODS AND MATERIAL: Prospective clinical follow-up study for a cohort of generally healthy elementary school age children with unilateral conductive HL with unknown etiology. The stu

Hearing devices for children with unilateral hearing loss: Patient- and parent-reported perspectives.

OBJECTIVE: Management of children with unilateral hearing loss is not standardized. The primary goal of this study was to elicit patient- and parent-reported perspectives regarding usage of hearing devices in pediatric UHL and to suggest a basic algorithmic approach to management. METHODS: Our tertiary care center recruited families of youth ages 5-19 years with unilateral hearing loss from January 2014 through October 2015. Parents of all youths completed a 36-item survey, and some youth ages 11-19 years participated in hour-long interviews. We assessed patterns of hearing device usage among

Acute unilateral hearing loss as an unusual presentation of cholesteatoma.

BACKGROUND: Cholesteatomas are epithelial cysts that contain desquamated keratin. Patients commonly present with progressive hearing loss and a chronically discharging ear. We report an unusual presentation of the disease with an acute hearing loss suffered immediately after prolonged use of a pneumatic drill. CASE PRESENTATION: A 41 year old man with no previous history of ear problems presented with a sudden loss of hearing in his right ear immediately following the prolonged use of a pneumatic drill on concrete. The cause was found to be a fractured long process of incus which had been ero

Bilateral hearing loss as a sequel to unilateral acoustic trauma.

Within the framework of a study on the natural history of acoustic trauma, over 600 soldiers were examined. A higher rate of bilateral acoustic trauma was observed among soldiers with longer service. Comparison between unilateral and bilateral acoustic trauma showed a greater severity of damage in both ears of the latter group. Comparison of the progression of the damage in the same persons on two consecutive examinations suggested the same trend. It is suggested that bilateral acoustic trauma may be a later and more severe stage in some types of noise-induced damage.

Characterisation of the treatment provided for children with unilateral hearing loss.

BACKGROUND: Children with permanent unilateral hearing loss (UHL) are an understudied population, with limited data to inform the guidelines on clinical management. There is a funding gap in healthcare provision for the children with UHL in the United Kingdom, where genetic screening, support services, and devices are not consistently provided or fully funded in all areas. They are a disparate population with regard to aetiology and their degree of hearing loss, and hence their device choice and use. Despite having one "good ear", some children with UHL can have similar outcomes, socially, beh

Indication for surgery in otosclerotic patients with unilateral hearing loss.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to evaluate postoperative spatial speech discrimination in noise in a group of otosclerotic patients with unilateral hearing loss in a 6-month follow-up. Moreover, an additional objective is to verify if our routine criteria (air-bone gap >30 dB at 250-2,000 Hz) for surgical indication in such patients can be acceptable. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective evaluation in 20 patients divided into 2 groups: unilateral otosclerosis and bilateral otosclerosis already successfully operated on 1 side and planned for stapedotomy on the contralateral ear. Sudden unilateral sensorineural hearing loss: a syndrome or a symptom?

In 122 patients with sudden unilateral sensorineural hearing loss, no apparent cause was identified in 88 cases. In these idiopathic cases, gender did not affect the age distribution and age did not affect the range of most affected frequencies or the severity of hearing loss. Vertigo at onset of the disease was not a sign of poor prognosis. Cases in the idiopathic group could, generally, be distinguished into two groups: (1) cases with hearing loss affecting all (with one exception) or mainly the high frequencies and symptomatology reminiscent of known types of cranial (poly)neuritis; (2) cas
