The transcription factor LMO2 is involved in vascular and hematopoietic development and hematolymphoid neoplasia. We have demonstrated that LMO2 is expressed nearly ubiquitously in native and neoplastic vasculature, including lymphatics. LMO2 reactivity is otherwise virtually absent in nonhematolymphoid tissues except in breast myoepithelium, prostatic basal cells, and secretory phase endometrial glands. Vasculature is LMO2- in adult and fetal heart, brain of older adults, hepatic sinusoids, and hepatocellular carcinoma. LMO2 is uniformly expressed in benign vascular and lymphatic neoplasms an

Cancer epidemiology, biomarkers & prevention : a publication of the American Association for Cancer Research, cosponsored by the American Society of Preventive Oncology2026eng
BACKGROUND: Myeloid neoplasms are a group of pathologies characterized by clonal hematopoiesis and genetic mutations, often associated with inflammation and cardiovascular (CV) risk. Whereas targeted therapies have improved prognosis, they may also lead to CV adverse effects. The aim was to analyze the risk of developing CV or cerebrovascular disease (CVD) events in patients who received a diagnosis of myeloid neoplasm, considering four subgroups of myeloid neoplasms: chronic myeloid leukemia, myeloproliferative neoplasm, myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), and acute myeloid leukemia.

Sudden cardiac death is a phenomenon that affects more than 200,000 individuals annually in the United States. Among sudden cardiac deaths, only a fractionally small portion is thought to be attributable to intracardiac neoplasms. Though rarely implicated as the primary cause of death, cardiac myxomas are the most common benign neoplasms of the heart and have been known to cause death due to multifactorial embolic events, fatal arrhythmias, and frank obstructive events. In this case, a healthy, asymptomatic young male was found unresponsive in his residence. Examination of the heart at autopsy

Three male control B6C3F1 mice, one male and one female F344 rat were found to have lung tumours with unusual sites of distant metastases. The neoplasms spread to the regional lymph nodes, left heart, kidney, prostate and testes. One mouse showed metastases to the brain. Each had a metastasizing lung tumor in the medulla and cortex of the right adrenal gland and one neoplasm had spread to the heart, pancreas and kidney.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiac neoplasms are rare and the vast majority are metastatic in origin. Symptoms of cardiac neoplasms (primary or metastatic) usually appear late in the course of the disease and are often ignored because of the more severe effects of the primary malignant disorder or its therapy. Consequently, cardiac neoplasms, especially metastatic ones, are often not discovered until autopsy.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the incidence of cardiac neoplasms at autopsy and to determine the sites of origins of metastatic cardiac neoplasms.
METHODS: The pathology records from consecutive autopsies p

This study examined the differences in mortality rate among the three ethnic groups aged 35 to 69: 1) Japanese living in Kawasaki city, 2) Koreans living in Kawasaki city, 3) Koreans living in Korea. Three different measures were used for analysis: 1) mortality rate by sex and age, 2) Mantel-Haenszel Rate Ratio (MHRR), 3) Standardized Proportional Mortality Ratio (SPMR). Major findings were as follows: 1) In terms of mortality rate by sex and age, Koreans in both Kawasaki and Korea showed higher mortality rates than Japanese in Kawasaki for both sexes and for all of the age categories. INTRODUCTION: Cardiac metastases are found in six to 20% of autopsies of patients with malignant neoplasm. The most common neoplasms that metastasize to the heart are malignant melanoma, lymphoma, and leukemia, but the relative numbers are greater with breast and lung cancers, reflecting the most common incidence of these cancers.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old Hispanic man presented to our hospital after being transferred from an outside hospital for workup and evaluation of an adrenal mass of the abdomen and pelvis, found on computed tomography. His chief complaint upon admission was alte

BACKGROUND: Public funding for medical research in Germany is primarily provided by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The aim of this study was to analyze the amount of national public funding for medical research on predominant causes of death in Germany, cardiovascular diseases and neoplasms, in relation to the burden of these diseases in Germany.
METHODS: Three evaluators categorized medical research projects funded by the DFG or BMBF between 2010 and 2012 into the categories "Diseases of the circulatory system" (with subgroups

In patients over 50 years of age, neoplasms of the pleura are probably the second most common cause of a pleural effusion after congestive heart failure. Lung cancer, breast cancer, lymphoma, ovarian carcinoma, and stomach cancer are the leading causes of malignant pleural disease, and adenocarcinoma is the most common cell type. This review discusses in detail the etiology and incidence, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of neoplasms that involve the pleura with special reference to malignant and paramalignant pleural effusions.

Cardiac paragangliomas are extremely rare neoplasms with an incidence of 1% of all cardiac tumors and can be completely asymptomatic, therefore, diagnosis is difficult. This article reports the case of an 18-year-old man with a heart murmur detected during a routine physical examination. Echocardiography revealed a heart tumor measuring 7 cm in size in the right atrium. Due to the tumor size and the threat of tricuspid valve insufficiency, tumor resection was performed. The histopathological examination revealed a cardiac paraganglioma with positive reactions of the tumor cells for chromograni

Primary cardiac tumours are relatively rare in the paediatric population, and they may occur with different signs and symptoms in foetal or post-natal life. The clinical manifestations of cardiac tumours in foetal life may include arrhythmias, congestive heart failure and hydrops. In post-natal life, cardiac tumours may cause cyanosis, respiratory distress, myocardial dysfunction, valvular insufficiency, arrhythmias, inflow or outflow tract obstructions and sudden death. Surgical treatment is essential when symptoms are present, while the role of medical therapy can merely be palliative. Resul

The main causes of death of 100 elderly Chagas' patients (group A), of 100 elderly non-Chagas' disease (group B) and of 100 non-elderly Chagas' disease patients (group C) were surveyed clinically and by postmortem data. Compared to B, the A group showed significantly more deaths due to chronic Chagas' heart disease and digestive "megas", and less frequently to malignant neoplasm. Deaths due to pulmonary emphysema and malignant neoplasms were significantly more common and deaths due to chronic Chagas' heart disease were significantly less common in the A group when compared to the C group. Myeloproliferative neoplasms are associated with increased risk for thrombotic complications. These conditions most commonly involve somatic mutations in genes that lead to constitutive activation of the Janus-associated kinase signaling pathway (eg, Janus kinase 2, calreticulin, myeloproliferative leukemia protein). Acquired gain-of-function mutations in these genes, particularly Janus kinase 2, can cause a spectrum of disorders, ranging from clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential, a recently recognized age-related promoter of cardiovascular disease, to frank hematologic malignancy.

This multi-institutional report describes 8 cases of rhabdomyosarcoma in horses. Four neoplasms were in the tongue and other areas of the mouth or head, 2 were in the abdominal wall, and 1 each was in right shoulder muscles and heart. Four rhabdomyosarcomas that were less than 10 cm in diameter were treated by surgical excision or radiation with no recurrence. Two neoplasms greater than 10 cm in diameter in the abdominal wall and the right shoulder were considered inoperable and led to decisions to euthanize the horses. Two neoplasms were incidental findings at necropsy. All the neoplasms were

Primary tumors of the heart are not common. However, metastatic neoplasms affecting the heart are more commonly found. Postmortem studies have shown that some tumors have reported secondary cardiac implants to be over 50%. Such involvement is to be taken into account for patients with a history of neoplasm and who present conduction disorders, murmur, cardiomegaly or arrhythmia. This is to report the case of a 39-year-old man who had been referred due to fatigue and dyspnea on effort. Echocardiogram evidence showed large tumoral mass in right ventricle. Medical history showed previous melanoma

Low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma (LGFMS) is a rare neoplasm commonly affecting young adults and typically arising in the somatic soft tissue of the proximal extremities. Its occurrence within the thoracic cavity is exceedingly rare. We report an LGFMS arising from the epicardial surface of the right side of the heart in a 44-year-old woman. Diagnosis was aided by a strikingly characteristic light microscopic appearance of a bland spindle cell sarcoma containing numerous so-called giant collagen rosettes and supported by immunohistology, evidence of FUS translocation by fluorescence in situ hybrid

OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: 219 heart transplant recipients with survival over 3 months were retro- and prospectively analysed for the incidence of primary neoplasms. Patients received immunosuppressive drugs (cyclosporine A, azathioprine, steroids) with a 4-5 days induction course of Rabbit Anti-Thymocyte Immunoglobulin (RATG) or monoclonal antibodies induction /OKT3/ in some cases. Anti-rejection treatment consisted of pulse doses of methyloprednisolon or RATG.
RESULTS: 9 cases of malignancy (4.1%) with one case of pre-malignant liver condition (dysplasia gigantocellulare, 0.45%) were found (8M
