Left Ventricular Noncompaction Is More Prevalent in Ventricular Septal Defect Than Other Congenital Heart Defects: A Morphological Study.

Left ventricular noncompaction (LVNC) is a condition characterized by prominent ventricular trabeculae and deep intertrabecular recesses and has been described as a possible substrate for arrhythmias, thromboembolism, and heart failure. Herein, we explored the prevalence of LVNC morphology among hearts with congenital heart defects (CHD). We examined 259 postnatal hearts with one of the following CHD: isolated ventricular septal defect (VSD); isolated atrial septal defect (ASD); atrioventricular septal defect (AVSD); transposition of the great arteries (TGA); isomerism of the atrial appendages

Cardiac Arrhythmias and Impaired Heart Rate Variability in Older Patients With Ventricular Septal Defects.

Background Congenital ventricular septal defects (VSDs) are considered to have benign long-term outcome when treated correctly in childhood. However, abnormal parameters are described in younger adults, including impaired heart rate variability (HRV). It is not known whether such abnormalities will deteriorate with age. Therefore, HRV and cardiac events, such as premature ventricular contraction, were evaluated in patients aged >40 years with congenital VSDs and compared with healthy peers. Methods and Results A total of 30 surgically closed VSDs (51±8 years, repair at median age 6.3 years wit

[The diagnosis of congenital heart defects today. Part 1: Ventricular septal defect, pulmonary stenosis, patent ductus arteriosus, atrial septal defect].

Most congenital heart diseases are detected in childhood, but some, such as atrial septal defect, can remain undiagnosed until adulthood. In the first part of this review, taking the auscultation findings and the clinical picture as a basis, the diagnosis of four common congenital heart diseases is discussed: ventricular septal defect, pulmonary stenosis, patient ductus arteriosus, and atrial septal defect. In addition, the latest developments in the field of therapy are briefly considered.

Differential Expression of CircRNAs in Embryonic Heart Tissue Associated with Ventricular Septal Defect.

Objectives: To explore and validate the differential expression of circRNAs in the myocardium of congenital ventricular septal defect (VSD) and to explore a new avenue of research regarding the pathological mechanisms of VSD. Methods: We detected circRNAs expression profiles in heart tissues taken from six aborted fetuses with VSD and normal group using circRNA microarray. Some differentially expressed circRNAs were studied by bioinformatics analysis. Finally, quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was performed to confirm these results. Results: This study foun

Mechanisms of pulmonary hypertension related to ventricular septal defect in congenital heart disease.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate differences in molecular mechanisms of pulmonary hypertension between patients with complete transposition of the great arteries (TGA) combined with ventricular septal defect (VSD) and those with VSD alone. METHODS: Twenty-four consecutive patients with pulmonary hypertension (mean pulmonary artery pressure > 30 mm Hg) underwent surgical correction of TGA + VSD (n = 10) or VSD alone (n = 14). Lung specimens were taken from the right middle lobe before cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Extent of pulmonary hypertension was graded according to the

Complete heart block after occlusion and repair for perimembranous ventricular septal defect.

BACKGROUND: Complete atrioventricular conduction block (CAVB) is a major complication of the repair and occlusion of perimembranous ventricular septal defects (pmVSDs). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyse the incidence and risk factors of CAVB after occlusion and repair of pmVSD. METHODS: We reviewed patients with pmVSDs who underwent occlusion and repair between January 2010 and January 2022. Permanent CAVB was defined as a CAVB requiring permanent pacemaker implantation or occluder extraction. RESULTS: Of 2436 patients who underwent pmVSD repair, 7 (0.3%) developed permanent CAVB. In a

Ventricular septal defect and congestive heart failure in a common degu (Octodon degus).

We report a case of ventricular septal defect causing congestive heart failure in a two-year-old, male common degu (Octodon degus). The patient presented for anorexia and dental disease, and a grade 4/6 holosystolic cardiac murmur was detected on physical exam. Thoracic radiographs showed cardiomegaly and a diffuse interstitial pulmonary pattern, consistent with congestive heart failure. Echocardiography was supportive of a perimembranous ventricular septal defect exhibiting low-velocity left-to-right shunting, and biatrial enlargement. These diagnoses were confirmed on post-mortem exam, along

Pulmonary atresia with restrictive ventricular septal defect: a rare congenital heart disease.

An increasing number of burns are associated with a popular hair braiding trend incorporating synthetic hair extensions. These burns occur predominantly in young African American females and across all age groups. The hair technique involves the ends of the braid being dipped in scalding water to prevent unwinding. This process requires the installer to place the attached hair in hot water behind the client to seal the ends of the braid. This burn injury is most frequently reported on the back, shoulder, arm, forearm, thigh, and leg. The reported cases of this burn injury occurred most frequen

Eisenmenger syndrome in adults: ventricular septal defect, truncus arteriosus, univentricular heart.

OBJECTIVES: Morbidity and mortality patterns were characterized in adults with the Eisenmenger syndrome when two ventricles with a ventricular septal defect (VSD) joined two great arteries or one great artery, or when one ventricle joined two great arteries. BACKGROUND: Although afterload in these disorders differs, clinical differences have not been defined. METHODS: Seventy-seven patients were studied. Group A comprised 47 patients with VSD, aged 23 to 69 years (mean 39.5+/-10.2), follow-up 5 to 18 years (mean 7.2+/-4.9); group B, 14 patients with truncus arteriosus, aged 27 to 50 years (m

[Doppler echocardiographic evaluation of right heart pressure in children with ventricular septal defect].

Thirty seven children with ventricular septal defects (VSD) alone or associated with other malformations were examined by Doppler echocardiography to evaluate systolic right ventricular pressure (SRVP) non-invasively. All patients underwent cardiac catheterisation within 48 hours of the Doppler estimation. The maximum interventricular pressure gradient could be assessed in 32 patients (86%) from the recording of the maximum velocity of the VSD jet using the simplified Bernoulli formula. The SRVP was calculated by subtracting the maximum interventricular pressure gradient from the systolic bloo

Maternal alcohol drinking pattern during pregnancy and the risk for an offspring with an isolated congenital heart defect and in particular a ventricular septal defect or an atrial septal defect.

BACKGROUND: This cohort study examines the possible association between maternal alcohol intake, including binge drinking, during pregnancy, and the subsequent risk of having a child with an isolated congenital heart defect and, more specifically, with the isolated form of ventricular septal defect (VSD) or of an atrial septal defect (ASD). METHODS: Participants were 80,346 pregnant women who were enrolled into the Danish National Birth Cohort in 1996-2002 and gave birth to a live-born singleton without any chromosome anomalies. Twice during pregnancy these women were asked about their intake

The surgical anatomy of the left ventricular outflow tract in hearts with ventricular septal defect and aortic arch obstruction.

BACKGROUND: Profound understanding of the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) anatomy is crucial to improve surgical results in patients with aortic arch obstruction, ventricular septal defect, and subaortic stenosis. METHODS: We studied the morphology of the LVOT in 32 postmortem hearts with aortic arch obstruction and a ventricular septal defect. In case of subaortic obstruction, the length of the subaortic muscular component was measured anteriorly and posteriorly within the left ventricle. RESULTS: Seven of the 32 hearts had no subaortic stenosis. Nine had aortic override, which caused

Perventricular device closure of residual muscular ventricular septal defects after repair of complex congenital heart defects in pediatric patients.

Residual muscular ventricular septal defects are surgical challenges, especially after the repair of complex congenital heart defects. We investigated perventricular device closure as a salvage technique in pediatric patients who had postoperative residual muscular ventricular septal defects. From February 2009 through June 2011, 14 pediatric patients at our hospital had residual muscular ventricular septal defects after undergoing surgical repair of complex congenital heart defects. Ten patients met our criteria for perventricular device closure of the residual defects: significant left-to-ri
