Mechanical ventilation (MV) is a life-saving intervention in patients who are incapable of maintaining adequate pulmonary gas exchange due to respiratory failure or other disorders. However, prolonged MV is associated with the development of respiratory muscle weakness. We hypothesized that a single exposure to whole body heat stress would increase diaphragm expression of heat shock protein 72 (HSP72) and that this treatment would protect against MV-induced diaphragmatic atrophy. Adult male Wistar rats (n = 38) were randomly assigned to one of four groups: an acutely anesthetized control group

OBJECTIVE: Exertional heat stroke (EHS), characterised by a high core body temperature (Tcr) and central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction, is a concern for athletes, workers and military personnel who must train and perform in hot environments. The objective of this study was to determine whether algorithms that estimate Tcr from heart rate and gait instability from a trunk-worn sensor system can forward predict EHS onset.
METHODS: Heart rate and three-axis accelerometry data were collected from chest-worn sensors from 1806 US military personnel participating in timed 4/5-mile runs, and loade

NEW FINDINGS: What is the topic of this review? Exertional heat stroke epidemiology in sport and military settings, along with common risk factors and strategies and policies designed to mitigate its occurrence. What advances does it highlight? Individual susceptibility to exertional heat stroke risk is dependent on the interaction of intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Heat policies in sport should assess environmental conditions, as well as the characteristics of the athlete, clothing/equipment worn and activity level of the sport. Exertional heat stroke risk reduction in the military should ac

BACKGROUND: Heat illnesses affect a large number of people every year and are becoming an increasing cause of pathology as climate change results in increasing global temperatures.
OBJECTIVE: This article will review the physiological responses to heat, as well as the pathophysiological processes that result in heat illnesses. The emphasis will be on providing general practitioners (GPs) with an understanding of how to prevent heat illness in their patients and how to predict who is most at risk.
DISCUSSION: Heat illnesses may be thought of as minor or major illnesses, any of which may prese

Heat-related illnesses cause 240 deaths annually. Although common in athletes, heat-related illnesses also affect the elderly, persons with predisposing medical conditions and those taking a variety of medications. Symptoms range from mild weakness, dizziness and fatigue in cases of heat edema, to syncope, exhaustion and multisystem complications, including coma and death, in cases of heat stroke. Milder heat-related symptoms can be treated with hydration, rest and removal from the hot environment. Heat stroke, a life-threatening problem, must be treated emergently. Prompt recognition is criti

With global warming and frequent heat waves, the incidence of heat-related-illness has gradually increased, and heatstroke is the most serious clinical syndrome, with high mortality and incidence of sequelae. Effective heatstroke warning aims to reduce the incidence and the harm of heatstroke by monitoring certain parameters and forecasting the possibility of suffering heat illness, however, there is no unified summary of the heatstroke early warning system at present. The occurrence of heatstroke involves two key aspects: climate environment and individual susceptibility, and individual susce

In mammalian cells, short-term (acute) exposure to a moderate heat shock leads to a transient arrest of cells at mainly two cell cycle checkpoints, the G1/S and G2/M transitions. This is documented by the more or less synchronous resumption of cell cycle progression from these checkpoints during recovery. The reason for the accumulation of cells at these checkpoints may be found in activity thresholds of cyclin-dependent kinases (Cdks) at both transitions which are determined by (i) the amounts of the responsible cyclins, (ii) regulatory phosphorylation of the Cdks and (iii) the inhibition of

Heat-related illnesses encompass a spectrum of disorders resulting from exposure to high temperatures and the body's inability to efficiently dissipate heat. These syndromes range from mild illnesses, such as heat edema, heat rash, and heat cramps, to more concerning manifestations such as exercise-associated collapse, heat exhaustion, and exertional rhabdomyolysis. The most severe and potentially life-threatening heat-related illnesses include exercise collapse associated with sickle cell trait, severe exercise-associated hyponatremia, and heat stroke. Common risk factors of heat-related illn

There is a growing incidence of heat-related illnesses due to rising global temperatures. Heat-related illnesses range from mild to severe, with heat stroke being the most critical. The wet bulb global temperature index considers humidity and solar intensity; its use is recommended to estimate heat stress on an individual and mitigate risk. Efficient cooling methods, such as cold water immersion, are essential in severe cases. Prevention is through hydration, appropriate clothing, recognition of high risk medications, and awareness of environmental conditions. Recognizing heat-related illnesse

Heat-related illness (HRI) is a broad term that includes clinical conditions ranging from heat cramps and syncope to heat exhaustion and heatstroke, which may result in death. HRIs are one of the major causes of death worldwide and continue to increase in severity with the rise in global temperature. The identification and estimation of heat-related morbidity and mortality is a major challenge. Heat stress manifests itself into respiratory, cardiovascular, and cerebrovascular disorders, leading to the attribution of the deaths caused by heat stress to these disorders. Although HRIs affect mank

Buffalo is playing a leading role in the national economy by producing milk, meat and draught power in Pakistan. According to the Economic Survey of Pakistan (2023-24), buffalo contributes about 59.6%, followed by cattle (37.4%) and sheep/goat/camel (3%). The climatic conditions of tropical areas are primarily characterized as hot and humid. High ambient temperatures, mainly, are a significant factor affecting animals in tropical and subtropical regions. Due to high temperatures and moisture, heat stress is the main force hindering buffalo productivity in tropical regions. High ambient tempera

Heat stress can alter the expression of genes in the individual's molecular response. The identification of these genes makes it possible to better understand the molecular response, identifying biomarker genes and indirect response pathways that can help with genetic improvement studies, animal welfare, separating more thermotolerant varieties and mitigating the effects of heat stress. The aim of this scientometric review was to characterize the state of the art of scientific research into gene expression in ruminants under heat stress, to define the most studied species, biology systems and

Heat stress profoundly compromises reproductive efficiency in dairy cattle by disrupting follicular and oocyte development, altering steroid hormone profiles, impairing estrous expression and ovulation, reducing fertilization success, hindering embryonic development, and increasing early embryonic loss. Although the molecular mechanisms underlying these disruptions remain incompletely understood, significant advances in reproductive technologies have been developed to mitigate the negative impact of heat stress on reproductive performance. Estrous cycle synchronization programs, enabling timed
