Plantar heel pain due to vascular leiomyoma (angioleiomyoma).

The differential diagnosis of heel pain is extensive. The plantar heel pain is usually due to mechanical etiology, including plantar fasciitis, calcaneal spur, stress fracture, and nerve entrapment. Tumor is a rare cause of plantar heel pain. We present a case of chronic plantar heel pain with a vascular leiomyoma at the heel pad.

The plantar calcaneal spur: a review of anatomy, histology, etiology and key associations.

The plantar calcaneal spur (PCS) is a bony outgrowth from the calcaneal tuberosity and has been studied using various methods including cadavers, radiography, histology and surgery. However, there are currently a number of discrepancies in the literature regarding the anatomical relations, histological descriptions and clinical associations of PCS. Historically, authors have described the intrinsic muscles of the foot and/or the plantar fascia as attaching to the PCS. In this article we review the relationship between the PCS and surrounding soft tissues as well as examining the histology of t

Are enlarged peroneal tubercle and accessory anterolateral talar facet associated with calcaneal spur?

BACKGROUND: As the anatomical variations of the foot, enlarged peroneal tubercle (EPT) and accessory anterolateral talar facet (AALTF) have attracted the attention of foot surgeons in recent years. However, EPT and AALTF have not been examined for a relationship with calcaneus spur (CS) as a common osteophyte. METHODS: The subjects were 369 individuals who died in northeastern Thailand and were preserved as skeletal specimens. The authors examined for the presence of left and right EPT, AALTF, and calcaneus spur (CS). We divided the EPT (+) group with EPT and the EPT (-) group without it and

Plantar fasciitis.

Thirty patients presenting with the heel pain syndrome, commonly referred to as "plantar fasciitis", were studied prospectively over a two year period. The pain was associated with a calcaneal spur in 21 patients (70%). In a control series of 25 patients without heel symptoms, calcaneal spurs were present in only 4 out of 50 heels (8%). This difference is highly significant (p 0.001). Seven patients (22%) in the plantar fasciitis group complained of ipsilateral sciatica.

A comparative analysis of analgesic efficacy of ultrasound and shock wave therapy in the treatment of patients with inflammation of the attachment of the plantar fascia in the course of calcaneal spurs.

INTRODUCTION: Troublesome heel spur is a nuisance condition that affects people of all ages. Treatment of patients with heel spur is a difficult and lengthy process requiring patience from both the patient and the therapist. Sometimes, the only and ultimate method of treatment is surgery, although spurs tend to recur. The aim of the study is a comparative analysis of the analgesic efficacy of ultrasound and shock wave therapy in patients with heel spur. The cause of pain in the course of calcaneal spur is inflammation of the attachment of the plantar fascia, which plays an important role in th

Plantar Fasciitis With a Calcaneal Spur.

This study presents the case of a 47-year-old male with right foot plantar fasciitis and a calcaneal spur. Chronic heel pain can be caused by several medical conditions, including plantar fasciitis and a calcaneal spur, which often may be overlooked on initial evaluation. The risk factors, clinical presentation, imaging findings, and emergency department management of plantar fasciitis with a calcaneal spur are reported and discussed.

Plantar fasciitis treated with endoscopic partial plantar fasciotomy-One-year clinical and ultrasonographic follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic operations for plantar fasciitis generally have good clinical outcome. The aim of this study was to record the effect of endoscopic partial fasciotomy and heel spur removal and evaluate by ultrasonography whether the fascia regenerates and the heel spur reforms. METHODS: Eleven consecutive patients were evaluated before and 3, 6 and 12 months after surgery. Operations were performed endoscopically using a deep fascial approach with a medial and a lateral portal. Bony spurs were removed and the medial half of the plantar fascia was transected. All patients followed a sta

Do the presence, size, and shape of plantar calcaneal spurs have any significance in terms of pain and treatment outcomes in patients with plantar fasciitis?

BACKGROUND: : The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the presence, size, or type of calcaneal spurs on pain or the outcomes of extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) therapy in patients with plantar fasciitis. METHODS: Seventy-four patients with unilateral plantar fasciitis who had no pain in the contralateral foot, either currently or in the past, were included in the study. The length, base width, type, and presence of plantar calcaneal spurs in both heels of the patients were determined using radiography. A total of five sessions of ESWT (3 bar, 2000 shocks/session, 12

The association of calcaneal spur length and clinical and functional parameters in plantar fasciitis.

INTRODUCTION: Plantar fasciitis (PF)is the most common cause of plantar heel pain. Despite many treatment alternatives for heel spur, the association of calcaneal spur size with clinical and functional parameters is inconclusive. The objective of this study to investigate the correlation of calcaneal spur length with clinical findings and functional status documented with Foot Function Index in patients with plantar fasciitis. METHODS: We performed power analysis for the sample size estimation. 87 patients with PF were scrutinized to reach the estimated patient number 75. Computer-aided linea

Plantar fasciitis and the calcaneal spur: Fact or fiction?

BACKGROUND: Plantar fasciitis is a common diagnosis in patients presenting with heel pain. The presence of co-existing calcaneal spurs has often been reported but confusion exists as to whether it is a casual or significant association. METHODS: The lateral heel radiographs of nineteen patients with a diagnosis of plantar fasciitis and nineteen comparison subjects with a lateral ankle ligament sprain matched for age and sex, were reviewed independently by two observers. Objective measurements of calcaneal spur length and a subjective grading of spur size were recorded. RESULTS: There was a s

Haglund's syndrome. Two case reports.

Haglund's syndrome produces posterior impingement of the heel, which is caused by a posterosuperior calcaneal exostosis, known as Haglund's deformity, associated with Achilles tendinitis and retrocalcaneal bursitis. Its pathogenesis is unknown. We report two cases that were diagnosed clinically and confirmed radiographically. One patient was treated conservatively and the other underwent surgery. The diagnosis is based on clinical signs and radiological images, using the measurement of the parallel pitch lines, in a lateral radiograph of the ankle. Initial treatment is usually conservative and

Comparison between radial and focused types of extracorporeal shock-wave therapy in plantar calcaneal spur: A randomized sham-controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Both radial and focused types of extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) have been used in patients with plantar calcaneal spur (PCS). However, no study has yet addressed the comparative effects of these treatments on the condition. Considering radial and focused waves are different from each other, their effectiveness may also be different in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of radial and focused types of ESWT on PCS. METHODS: Ninety-nine patients with plantar calcaneal spur were randomised into three groups according to ESWT types: focused, ra
