An outbreak of hepatic veno-occlusive disease in north-western Afghanistan.

Following a 2-year period of severe drought a very large number of patients with massive ascites and emaciation were observed in north-western Afghanistan. Clinicopathological study showed that these were typical cases of hepatic veno-occlusive disease. The outbreak was caused by consumption of bread made from wheat contiminated with seeds of Heliotropium plants, which were shown to contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids. Examination of 7200 inhabitants from the affected villages showed evidence of liver disease in 22.6%. Clinical improvement was observed in thirteen cases after 3 to 9 months of supp

Suspected pyrrolizidine alkaloid hepatotoxicosis in wild southern hairy-nosed wombats (Lasiorhinus latifrons).

Southern hairy-nosed wombats (Lasiorhinus latifrons) inhabiting degraded habitat in South Australia were recently identified with extensive hair loss and dermatitis and were in thin to emaciated body condition. Pathological and clinicopathological investigations on affected juvenile wombats identified a toxic hepatopathy suggestive of plants containing pyrrolizidine alkaloids, accompanied by photosensitive dermatitis. Hepatic disease was suspected in additional wombats on the basis of serum biochemical analysis. Preliminary toxicological analysis performed on scats and gastrointestinal content

A review of traditional remedies of ciguatera fish poisoning in the Pacific.

Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) is an illness caused by eating tropical coral fish contaminated with ciguatoxins (CTXs). The clinical management of patients with CFP is generally supportive and symptomatic in nature as no antidote exists. Of the many drugs prescribed, several have been claimed to be efficient in small, uncontrolled studies, but the outcomes of treatments with these medicines are often contradictory. In New Caledonia, traditional remedies are commonly employed in the treatment of CFP and of the 90 plant species catalogued as useful in CFP, the most popular herbal remedy by far i

A meta-analysis of preclinical studies using antioxidants for the prevention of cisplatin nephrotoxicity: implications for clinical application.

Cisplatin is an effective chemotherapeutic drug whose clinical use and efficacy are limited by its nephrotoxicity, which affects mainly the renal tubules and vasculature. It accumulates in proximal and distal epithelial tubule cells and causes oxidative stress-mediated cell death and malfunction. Consequently, many antioxidants have been tested for their capacity to prevent cisplatin nephrotoxicity. In this study, we made a systematic review of the literature and meta-analyzed 152 articles, which tested the nephroprotective effect of isolated compounds or mixtures of natural origin on cisplati

Host preference and performance shape infection patterns in the parasitic plant Cuscuta chilensis in the Chilean coastal desert.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Host choice shapes infection patterns in parasitic plants, yet how host availability translates into realized host use in natural communities remains poorly understood. We investigated host use by the stem parasite Cuscuta chilensis in the Chilean Coastal Desert, examining how host detection, choice, and infection after contact contribute to field infection patterns and whether host use is associated with parasite performance. METHODS: We conducted field surveys to document host availability and infection prevalence. Germinated C. chilensis seedlings were used in laborato

Pyrrolizidine alkaloid intoxication outbreaks in fattening pigs associated with drought-related feed contamination.

BACKGROUND: Pyrrolizidine alkaloid (PA) intoxication is a well-documented condition in livestock, resulting from the ingestion of forage and grain contaminated with PA-producing plants. These phytotoxins primarily affect the liver and can lead to severe clinical and pathological disorders, particularly in highly susceptibility species such as pigs. Although sporadic cases of chronic PA toxicosis have been reported in swine, extensive outbreaks affecting large geographic areas have not been previously documented. This report describes a large-scale PA intoxication event affecting multiple inten
