We analyzed the renal radiographic changes in the sickle hemoglobinopathies in 92 patients, in 70 of whom the specific hemoglobin type was documented by electrophoresis. The following conclusions have been drawn: (1) Approximately 50% of patients with SS hemoglobin have renal enlargement (both on roentgenograms and at autopsy), while only a small proportion of patients with the other hemoglobinopathies show renal enlargement; (2) slightly more than one half of patients with each type of hemoglobinopathy have calyceal changes; and (3) these calyceal changes do not fall into a specific pattern w

Screening for sickle cell hemoglobin can detect carriers, who can benefit from education and genetic counseling, and can bring about early diagnosis, supportive care, and management for patients with established disease. However, such screening programs should be designed and supervised properly by health professionals to avoid methodological pitfalls and other unfortunate circumstances that have occurred in the past.

Hemoglobin (Hb) disorders are among the most prevalent inherited diseases. Despite a limited number of involved genes, these conditions represent a broad clinical and prognostic spectrum. The menu of laboratory tests is extensive. From widely available modalities, for example, complete blood count to rather sophisticated molecular technologies, the investigation of Hb disorders recapitulates an increasing complexity of laboratory workup in other medical fields. This review highlights a current state of biochemical and molecular investigation of Hb disorders and offers a glimpse on technologies

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease is the most common inherited blood disorder in the world with the birth of approximately 300,000 newborns screened each year. In 2009, the World Health Organization ranked the fight against sickle cell disease among the priorities for the Africa regions. The best way to prevent this incurable disease remains, on one hand systematic screening at birth, and on the other the proscription of risky union between heterozygous subjects.
AIM: The aim of this study was to analyze the epidemiological profile of sickle cell disease and other hemoglobinopathies in Benin an

Hemoglobinopathies, thalassemia and sickle cell disease are among the most frequent monogenic diseases in the world. Transfusion has improved dramatically their prognosis, but provokes iron overload, which induces multiple organ damages. Iron overload is related to accumulation of iron released from hemolysis and transfused red cell, but also, in thalassemic patients, secondary to ineffective erythropoiesis, which increases intestinal iron absorption via decreased hepcidin production. Transfusion-related cardiac iron overload remains a main cause of death in thalassemia in well-resourced count

The use of rivaroxaban in patients with hemoglobinopathies and thrombotic events has not been studied extensively. Here we present eight cases of such patients, five receiving rivaroxaban for stroke and systemic embolism prevention due to non-valvular atrial fibrillation and three for deep vein thrombosis treatment. The follow-up period ranged from 6 to 34 months. During this period none of the patients experienced any thrombotic or bleeding event. There were no other adverse events reported. Further studies with larger numbers of patients with hemoglobinopathies are needed to determine the use

S and C hemoglobinopathies are a group of inherited blood disorders including sickle cell disease, characterized by the presence of abnormal S and C hemoglobins. They are common in tropical Africa. Stroke is a common complication of sickle cell disease. Studies of the relation between these two diseases are virtually nonexistent in sub-saharan Africa. Our work aimed to study the influence of these hemoglobinopathies on the onset of strokes in adults. This cross-sectional study took place from 1st December 2009 to 31st May 2010 at University Hospital Yalgado Ouedraogo. Out of 142 patients admit

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in patients suffering from hemoglobinopathies is an important clinical problem, but the correlation between these diseases is still imperfectly known. The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical, serological and radiological characteristics of RA occurring in patients with hemoglobinopathies (thalassemia major, thalassemia intermedia and sickle-cell disease). In a single institution, in an adult cohort of 90 patients with hemoglobinopathies, we investigated retrospectively medical records of the patients. We evaluated the clinical findings, the autoantibodies an

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of haemoglobinopathies is of growing importance in Norway because of increasing immigration from countries where haemoglobinopathies are prevalent conditions. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and the various haemoglobinopathies diagnosed in Norway.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: For a period of three years, all samples with MCV lower than 70 fl were also examined for beta-thalassaemia and haemoglobin variants HbS, HbC, HbE and HbD. A total of 263 samples with low MCV were analysed by high-pressure liquid chromatog

Blood samples from 1,000 subjects, 2-80 years old, were tested to explore the prevalence of alpha-thalassemia trait, high persistent HbF (HPFH), sickle cell trait and beta-thalassemia minor in northern Jordan. Hematological parameters and hemoglobin electrophoresis were carried out on all samples. Results showed 10 (1%) subjects were sickle cell trait, 35 (3.5%) were heterozygous beta thalassemia, 31 (3.1%) alpha thalassemia trait and 10 (1%) high persistent HbF. The prevalence rates were different from those reported in neighbouring countries and their significance is discussed. No other abno

The pathophysiology, laboratory investigation, clinical manifestation, and treatment for the most common serious genetic disease in the United States have been discussed. It is unfortunate how uninformed the medical community is about this illness. Treatment for a chronic disease such as sickle cell disease requires that the physician be knowledgeable and compassionate. Although there is no cure, a great deal can be done to help patients cope with their illness. Recent advances in prevention of pneumococcal infection, proper use of transfusion therapy, and prenatal diagnosis are such examples.

The importance of the haemoglobinopathies, mainly thalassaemia, as a public health problem has been emphasized. The establishment of methods for detection and diagnosis of haemoglobinopathies is the major step in laboratories dedicated to screening anemias. Tables for the diagnosis of alpha and beta thalassaemia are proposed, the methods to identify abnormal haemoglobins are discussed and a map with the relative mobilities of 115 abnormal haemoglobins by electrophoresis in alkaline buffer is shown.

Perioperative management of a child with sickle-cell disease requires close collaboration between hematologist, surgeon and anesthetist. The level of preoperative preparation must consider both the surgical risk and the impact of the disease. Preoperative hydration and blood transfusion are the most important part of preoperative management. Anesthetic technique is not as important as preoperative preparation, management of stress and anxiety, and optimization of intraoperative physiological parameters (oxygenation, acid-base balance, tissue perfusion, normothermia). Pain management must be op

There have been several reports of vaso-occlusive events and sudden death in subjects with sickle cell trait. However, the precise mechanism underlying these episodes remains unclear. The clinical observations have been supported by in vitro studies in which haemoglobin AS (Hb AS) red cells showed abnormalities of their filterability, probably related to gelling or polymerisation of the Hb AS. These in vitro studies and reports in the literature of sickle-cell hearts led the authors to investigate the possible association between AS subject and coronary risk. The results of coronary angiograph

INTRODUCTION: Hemoglobinopathies are the most prevalent recessive disorders worldwide, characterized by wide molecular and clinical heterogeneity. They result from mutations within the alpha-, beta-, or delta-globin gene leading to aberrant expression or protein function. These abnormalities are widely spread throughout the Mediterranean basin. Due to their severity and disabling nature, hemoglobinopathies represent a major public health problem. Mutational screening of abnormal hemoglobins (Hbs) allows the creation of a mutation map, which forms the basis for a potential national prevention p
