Viral Hepatitis and Human Immunodeficiency Virus Testing and Linkage to Care for Individuals Enrolled in an Opioid Treatment Program.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, many opioid treatment programs (OTPs) do not offer viral hepatitis (VH) or human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing despite high prevalence among OTP clients. We initiated an opt-out VH and HIV testing and linkage-to-care program within our OTP. METHODS: All OTP intakes are screened for VH and HIV and evaluated for rescreening annually. A patient navigator reviews laboratory results and provides counseling in the OTP clinic. The medical record is queried to identify individuals with previously diagnosed, untreated VH or HIV. Navigation support is provided f

Epidemiology of sexually transmitted viral hepatitis in human immunodeficiency virus-positive men who have sex with men in Asia.

Both human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and viral hepatitis constitute major disease burden globally. As with other parts of the world, the HIV epidemic in Asia impacts mainly on men who have sex with men, one of the at-risk populations for sexually transmitted viral hepatitis. With the increasing availability of effective antiretroviral therapy, HIV-related mortality of people living with HIV has markedly reduced. Liver disease has become an important cause of mortality and morbidity in the HIV-infected population. With the improvement of socioeconomic conditions and availability of healthcar

Seroprevalence of viral hepatitis and infectious complications among human immunodeficiency virus-infected injection drug users at a referral hospital.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The seroprevalence of viral hepatitis and spectrum of infectious complications among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected injection drug users (IDUs) remains unclear in Taiwan, although there has been a significant increase in the prevalence of HIV infection among IDUs in the last 2 to 3 years. METHODS: The medical records of HIV-infected IDUs who sought medical care at a referral hospital for HIV care from June 1994 to December 2006 were retrospectively reviewed. A standardized case record form was used to collect demographic, clinical, laboratory and microbiol

[Identification of human genes potentially involved in the pathogenesis of viral hepatitis C based on multi-network bioinformatics analysis].

AIM: The aim of this study was to search for human genes potentially involved in the pathogenesis of hepatitis C by multi-network bioinformatics linkage analysis of proteins involved in the stages of hepatitis C virus (HСV) attachment and entry. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A number of web applications with complementary algorithms and databases were used to analyze genetic and protein-protein networks. The following genes were used as basic genes: CD81, CLDN1, LDLR, OCLN, SCARB1, the products of which are involved in interaction with viral glycoproteins E1 and E2 at the stage of HCV attachment and

Parameters of human hepatitis delta virus genome replication: the quantity, quality, and intracellular distribution of viral proteins and RNA.

Assembly of hepatitis delta virus (HDV) in infected human hepatocytes involves association of the 1,679- nucleotide single-stranded genomic RNA (deltaRNA) with multiple copies of both small and large forms of the delta protein (deltaAg) to form a ribonucleoprotein particle which in turn interacts with envelope proteins of the natural helper virus, hepatitis B virus. Subsequently, for initiation of a new round of replication, the amount of small deltaAg within the assembled HDV particle is both necessary and sufficient. Quantitative assays were used in order to better understand just how much d

Can next-generation humanized mice that reconstituted with both functional human immune system and hepatocytes model the progression of viral hepatitis to hepatocarcinogenesis?

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and Hepatitis C virus (HCV) chronic infections cause liver immunopathological diseases such as hepatitis, fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinomas, which are difficult to treat and continue to be major health problems globally. Due to the species-specific hepato-tropism of HBV and HCV, conventional rodent models are limited in their utility for studying the infection and associated liver immunopathogenesis. Humanized mice reconstituted with both functional human immune system and hepatocytes (HIS-HuHEP mice) have been extremely instrumental for in vivo studies

Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) Genotype Mixtures, Viral Load, and Liver Damage in HBV Patients Co-infected With Human Immunodeficiency Virus.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) co-infection is possible in patients who are positive for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) since both share similar transmission routes. Furthermore, through the continuous risk of exposure, they potentially can be infected by mixtures of distinct HBV genotypes which can result in the presence of two or more genotypes in a single patient. This study aimed to specify the frequency of mixtures of HBV genotypes and their potential clinic importance in HIV-infected Mexican patients. HBV infection was assessed by serological testing and molecular diagnostics. HBV mixtures

Correlation between microRNA expression levels and clinical parameters associated with chronic hepatitis C viral infection in humans.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small RNAs that regulate gene expression pathways. Previous studies have shown interactions between hepatitis C virus (HCV) and host miRNAs. We measured miR-122 and miR-21 levels in HCV-infected human liver biopsies relative to uninfected human livers and correlated these with clinical patient data. miR-122 is required for HCV replication in vitro, and miR-21 is involved in cellular proliferation and tumorigenesis. We found that miR-21 expression correlated with viral load, fibrosis and serum liver transaminase levels. miR-122 expression inversely correlated with fibrosi

A mouse with humanized liver as an animal model for predicting drug effects and for studying hepatic viral infection: where to next?

INTRODUCTION: The mouse is a common model used in evaluating drug metabolism and hepatitis infectivity. However, these models have limited value due to species difference in hepatic functions, leading to the creation of the chimeric mouse 12 years ago. These models were unique in that their hepatocytes had been replaced with human (hu) hepatocytes (dubbed the 'first-generation chimeric mouse'). Since then, the chimeric mouse has become a practical tool for this area of studies. However, some shortcomings have also been recognized. One major shortcoming is that the mouse cannot mimic hu-liver d

In Vitro Virucidal Activity of Different Essential Oils against Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus Used as Surrogate of Human Hepatitis C Virus.

The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a major hepatotropic virus that affects humans with increased risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma. The bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) causes abortion, calf mortality and poor reproductive performance in cattle. Due the difficulties of in vitro cultivation for HCV, BVDV has been used as surrogate for in vitro assessment of the efficacy of antivirals. Essential oils (EOs) display antiviral and virucidal activity on several viral pathogens. In this study, the virucidal activity of five EOs, Salvia officinalis L. EO (SEO), Melissa officinalis L. EO (MEO),

Emerging viral STIs among HIV-positive men who have sex with men: the era of hepatitis C virus and human papillomavirus.

The number of infectious disease outbreaks and the number of unique pathogens responsible have significantly increased since the 1980s. HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM) are a vulnerable population with regards to the introduction, spread and clinical consequences of (newly introduced) STIs. After the introduction of combination antiretroviral treatment (cART), the incidence of sexually acquired hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and human papillomavirus (HPV)-induced anal cancers have significantly increased among HIV-positive MSM. The introduction and expansion of HCV is the result

The Viral ORF3 Protein Is Required for Hepatitis E Virus Apical Release and Efficient Growth in Polarized Hepatocytes and Humanized Mice.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV), an enterically transmitted RNA virus, is a major cause of acute hepatitis worldwide. Additionally, HEV genotype 3 (gt3) can frequently persist in immunocompromised individuals with an increased risk for developing severe liver disease. Currently, no HEV-specific treatment is available. The viral open reading frame 3 (ORF3) protein facilitates HEV egress in vitro and is essential for establishing productive infection in macaques. Thus, ORF3, which is unique to HEV, has the potential to be explored as a target for antiviral therapy. However, significant gaps exist in our

High Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Viral Load and Coinfection with Viral Hepatitis Are Associated with Liver Enzyme Abnormalities among HIV Seropositive Patients on Antiretroviral Therapy in the Lake Victoria Zone, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Liver enzymes abnormalities have been found to be common among patients on antiretroviral treatment (ART). Apart from the effects of ART on these changes, other factors that can potentially contribute to the abnormal levels of these enzymes have been found to vary in different geographical locations. This study investigated factors associated with liver enzymes abnormalities among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected individuals on ART from the Lake Victoria zone, Tanzania. METHODS: A cross-sectional study involving a total of 230 sera from HIV seropositive patients from di

Influence of hepatitis C and hepatitis G virus co-infection on viral and cellular dynamics in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus following interruption of highly active anti-retroviral therapy.

This study describes the influence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) and hepatitis G virus (HGV) co-infection on CD4 cell count decline and plasma human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) viral load in HIV-infected patients during a 1-year period following interruption of highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART) guided by CD4 count. CD4 cell count decline and plasma HIV viral load did not differ between HIV mono-infected patients and those patients co-infected with HCV and HGV. HCV genotype 1 had no apparent influence on the cellular and viral dynamics in HIV-infected patients compared with other HCV
