A wide spectrum of hepatobiliary manifestations occur in Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)-infected patients. Among the common causes are the infectious hepatitis, drug-related hepatitis, opportunistic infections, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, HIV cholangiopathy and neoplasm. Auto-immune hepatitis (AIH) is rarely reported in this setting. We present two different presentations of auto immune hepatitis in HIV positive patients. One developed jaundice and ascites as a consequence of liver decompensation and other exhibited cholestatic pattern. Their serology and liver biopsy confirmed autoimmu

Hepatotropic viruses are important causes of human disease, but the intrahepatic immune response to hepatitis viruses is poorly understood because of a lack of tractable small- animal models. We describe a murine model of hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection that recapitulates critical features of type A hepatitis in humans. We demonstrate that the capacity of HAV to evade MAVS-mediated type I interferon responses defines its host species range. HAV-induced liver injury was associated with interferon-independent intrinsic hepatocellular apoptosis and hepatic inflammation that unexpectedly resulte

Background: Hepatitis A virus (HAV) can have severe manifestations in adult patients with other liver diseases, particularly in those infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This study aimed to measure immunity against HAV in HIV-positive individuals to determine the necessity of vaccination against HAV in this population. Methods: This cross-sectional study investigated 171 HIV-positive patients aged 18 years or older who were tested for serum IgG anti-viral hepatitis A antibody. The prevalence and its determinants were analyzed based on patient data. Results: The average age of the

BACKGROUND: Sporadic acute hepatitis E cases occurring in non-endemic areas have been associated to genotypes 3 and 4 of hepatitis E virus. Several studies have demonstrated the relationship among human and animals strains, mostly pigs and deers, from respective areas characterizing zoonosis. Circulation of genotype 3 of HEV in Brazilian swine herds have already been demonstrated. Nevertheless, no confirmed human cases have been reported to date in Brazil.
OBJECTIVES: A study was developed to attempt the identification of hepatitis E acute cases in Brazil.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective study

Serum amyloid A (SAA) is an acute-phase protein induced by a variety of inflammatory stimuli, including bacterial and viral infections. SAA was recently found to function as an opsonin for gram-negative bacteria. We report here that SAA inhibited hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in cultured cells. SAA reduced HCV infectivity in a dose-dependent manner when added during HCV infection but not after virus entry. SAA bound HCV virions and specifically blocked HCV entry but did not affect virus attachment. These findings suggest that SAA functions as part of the host innate immune defense mechanis

Hepatic complications currently represent one of the leading reasons for medical consultations, hospitalisation, and death in the HIV-infected population. This is due to a large extent to viral hepatitis, given its disproportionate frequency in this population. Chronic hepatitis B affects 5-10% of the HIV-infected population. Vaccination has reduced the incidence of liver disease related to hepatitis-B virus (HBV), and the availability of tenofovir has dramatically improved the prognosis of HIV/HBV carriers. Delta hepatitis affects around 15% of HIV-infected individuals in Europe harbouring po

We describe a virucidal small molecule, PD 404,182, that is effective against hepatitis C virus (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The median 50% inhibitory concentrations (IC(50)s) for the antiviral effect of PD 404,182 against HCV and HIV in cell culture are 11 and 1 μM, respectively. The antiviral activity of PD 404,182 is due to the physical disruption of virions that is accompanied to various degrees (depending on the virus and exposure temperature/time) by the release of viral nucleic acids into the surrounding medium. PD 404,182 does not directly lyse liposomal membranes even

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Hepatitis A virus (HAV) remains a significant public health threat. The HM175-mp4-based mouse model has advanced pathogenesis research, but its slow in vitro replication limits reverse genetic studies. We aimed to develop a genetically tractable HAV model through rational mutagenesis.
METHODS: Two cell-adaptive substitutions, A1052V in the 2B protein and F1163S in the 2C protein, were introduced into HM175-mp4 to generate the recombinant HAV-2m virus. HAV-2m was propagated in Huh7.5.1 cells and intravenously injected into Ifnar1 -/- mice to establish the animal model. Virol

INTRODUCTION: Due to their common routes of transmission, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) coinfection with hepatitis B virus (HBV) and/or hepatitis C virus (HCV) has become a major public health problem worldwide, particularly in Africa, where these viruses are endemic. Few systematic reviews report the epidemiological data of HBV and/or HCV coinfection with HIV in Africa, and none provided data on the case fatality rate (CFR) associated with this coinfection. This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence and case fatality rate of HBV and/or HCV infections among people living with

Blood transfusion services are a vital and integral part of modern healthcare services. However, the risk of transfusion transmittable infections (TTI) has been a major handicap. Therefore, this study was aimed at determining the prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among blood donors. A retrospective study was conducted to collect data about the blood donors who consecutively donated blood from October 2011 to 2014. A three-year retrospective study was conducted in Mekelle Blood Bank. A data abstraction format was used to colle

Anemia is a multifactorial problem in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, cancer, and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. New insights regarding anemia symptoms and quality of life (QOL) have prompted reassessment of traditional triggers for anemia treatment to increase hemoglobin (Hb) and improve QOL. In HIV-positive patients, anemia is independently associated with disease progression and survival. Many HIV-positive patients receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) still develop mild to moderate anemia and associated QOL impairment. Epoetin alfa effective

A seroprevalence study was carried out on 1757 outpatients consecutively seen in a sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic in order to evaluate the sexual transmission of hepatitis C virus (HCV). A total of 1442 consenting patients were tested for hepatitis C, hepatitis B and human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HCV, HBV, HIV-1) antibodies. The relations between anti-HCV, anti-HBc and anti-HIV-1 were studied. Of 73 anti-HCV positive reactions, 45 (61.6%) were confirmed by the recombinant immunoblot assay (RIBA). The proportion of individuals with anti-HCV was higher in outpatients with a his

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a newly-identified causative agent of acute and chronic hepatitis in severely immunocompromized patients. The present study sought to assess the prevalences of past, recent, on-going, and chronic HEV infections in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in Marseille, South-eastern France, and to determine if they were correlated with the patients' immunological status or with cirrhosis. Anti-HEV IgG and IgM and HEV RNA testing were concurrently performed on the plasma from 184 patients infected with HIV, including 81 with a CD4+ T-lymphocyte count (

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The contribution of the novel biomarkers, hepatitis B virus (HBV) RNA and HBV core-related antigen (HBcrAg), to characterization of HBV-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) coinfection is unclear. We evaluated the longitudinal dynamics of HBV RNA and HBcrAg and their association with classical HBV serum biomarkers and liver histology and viral staining.
METHODS: HBV-HIV co-infected adults from 8 North American centers entered a National Institutes of Health-funded prospective cohort study. Demographic, clinical, serological, and virological data were collected at entry and ev

BACKGROUND: Severity of hepatic fibrosis is greater in postmenopausal than in premenopausal women, perhaps owing to protective effects of estrogens. However, prior studies of estrogen and liver fibrosis lack serial fibrosis measures, adjustment for age, or longitudinal observations in coinfected populations.
METHODS: In a longitudinal cohort of women coinfected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV), we assessed fibrosis progression across reproductive age, using validated serum fibrosis markers, aminotransferase platelet ratio index (APRI) and fibrosis 4 (FIB-4).

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis delta virus (HDV) are major sources of acute and chronic hepatitis. HDV requires the envelope proteins of HBV for the processes of assembly and infection of new cells. Both viruses are able to infect hepatocytes though previous studies have failed to determine the mechanism of entry into such cells. This study began with evidence that suramin, a symmetrical hexasulfated napthylurea, could block HDV entry into primary human hepatocytes (PHH) and was then extrapolated to incorporate findings of others that suramin is one of many compounds that can block acti

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a hepatotropic DNA virus that infects over 250 million people worldwide and causes serious liver diseases. HBV infection can modulate host cellular processes, potentially inducing proteomic changes in hepatocytes. In this study, we investigated how acute HBV infection alters the proteome and secretome of primary human hepatocytes, a physiologically relevant in vitro model that retains essential liver-specific functions. Protein-level changes in cell lysates and culture supernatants were quantified 8 days post-infection using data-independent acquisition MS. We used H

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections are two chronic viral infections that share the same mode of transmission, making HIV/HCV coinfection frequent. Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) was a turning point in HIV treatment and has been shown to successfully restore immune function and reduce the frequency of opportunistic infections. Despite a virological response to HAART, a proportion of patients fail to achieve substantial immune recovery, as measured by peripheral CD4 cell counts. Herein, we present the case of a patient with HIV/HCV coinfection
