Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) level plays an important role in conjunction with other markers such as hepatitis B envelope antigen (HBeAg) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) deoxyribonucleic acid levels to predict disease activity in chronic Hepatitis B (CHB). Quantification of HBsAg is useful in differentiating carriers from active hepatitis in HBeAg negative patients, and current guidelines recommend monitoring of pegylated interferon alpha treatment in CHB infection. However, there are only few studies about the role of quantitative HBsAg (qHBsAg) monitoring in HIV-HBV coinfected patients. S

Various findings concerning the clinical significance of quantitative changes in hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) during the acute and chronic phase of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection have been reported. In addition to being a biomarker of HBV-replication activity, it has been reported that HBsAg could contribute to the immunopathogenesis of HBV persistent infection. Moreover, HBsAg could become an attractive target for immune therapy, since the cellular and humeral immune response against HBsAg might be able to control the HBV replication and life cycle. However, several reports have des

Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded specimens from 110 cases of primary hepatocellular carcinoma were stained for hepatitis B x antigen (HBxAg), hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), and hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAg). Eighty-four % of these patients were HBxAg positive in their tumor cells. Among the 110 cases studied, 80 had adjacent nontumorous tissue in the same block, and 65 of these nontumorous liver tissues stained positive for HBxAg (81%). HBsAg was positive in 19% of cases within tumor tissue and 61% in surrounding nontumorous tissue. HBcAg was positive in 11% of cases within tumor tis

One of the key features of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is the inability to mount sufficient and coordinated adaptive immune responses against HBV. Recent studies on HBV-specific B cells and antibody to hepatitis B surface antigen (anti-HBs) have shed light on their role in the pathogenesis of chronic hepatitis B (CHB). Anti-HBs is recognized as a protective immune marker, both for HBV infection clearance and following vaccination, and it is also considered an important indicator of functional cure for CHB. Notably, functional impairment of HBV-specific B cells may be reversible.

Testing for e antigen and antibody (anti-e) was performed by immunodiffusion and counterelectrophoresis in patients with polyarteritis nodosa fulminant hepatitis, and chronic active hepatitis (CAH), in 59 asymptomatic carriers of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) who underwent liver biopsy, and in 150 carriers followed with sequential SGPT determinations. Counterelectrophoresis was more sensitive that immunodiffusion. Neither e antigen nor anti-e was found in the absence of HBsAg. Among HCsAg-positive patients with polyarteritis nodosa and CAH, e antigen was found in 16 of 18 and 13 of 22, r

Hepatic cellular and subcellular expression of hepatitis B virus (HBV) antigens--HBsAg, HBcAg, and HBeAg--in 143 Chinese patients with chronic HBV infection were studied by immunohistochemical techniques. Nuclear expression of HBcAg and nuclear and cytoplasmic expression of HBeAg showed a secular trend decreasing from the carrier state and chronic persistent hepatitis (CPH), through chronic active hepatitis (CAH), to cirrhosis with or without hepatocellular carcinoma. In contrast, cytoplasmic HBcAg expression was significantly greater in patients with CPH and CAH (P < .0108). In addition, cyto

It is unclear whether hepatitis B surface antibody (HBsAb) confers clinical benefits after HBsAg seroclearance, especially in hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) seroreversion and maintenance of HBsAb. We evaluated this in patients (n = 222) with HBsAg loss following treatment with pegylated interferon (PEG-IFN)-based therapy who completed a 48-week follow-up period. Serum hepatitis B virus (HBV) markers and biochemical indicators were evaluated every 3 months. The primary endpoint was HBsAg seroreversion. Factors associated with HBsAg seroreversion were also investigated. HBsAb ≥100 mIU/ml re

This study investigated the ability of hepatitis B core-related antigen (HBcrAg) to predict hepatitis B virus (HBV) relapse in HBeAg-negative patients after cessation of entecavir therapy. A total of 301 HBeAg-negative patients without cirrhosis who had stopped entecavir therapy for at least 12 months were recruited. All patients fulfilled the stopping criteria proposed by the APASL 2012 guidelines. The five-year cumulative rates of virological relapse, clinical relapse and HBsAg loss were 71.6%, 57.3% and 18.7%, respectively. Serum HBsAg at end of treatment (EOT) was an independent predictor

Antibody to hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) has previously been recognized to be a sensitive marker of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. In addition, anti-HBc has recently been suggested to be a surrogate marker for non-A, non-B hepatitis agents in donated blood. The authors studied prospectively the HBV antigen and antibody status in four patients with chronic hepatitis and persistent presence of isolated anti-HBc in their sera. The serologic and histopathologic findings of these four patients were compared with those of three groups of patients having chronic hepatitis with or without H

We have determined the incidence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in an urban (Enugu) and a rural (Okpatu) population groups in Nigeria. There were no statistically significant differences between the incidence in the two populations. Contrary to earlier reports we did not observe any significant age-related differences in the incidence rates within either population group. In general our results are similar to those reported for the urban inhabitants of Ibadan (several hundred miles west of Enugu) and its surrounding rural population. The low carrier rate recorded for schoolchildren dra

Two pregnant women with chronic active viral hepatitis (HBs Ag+) and cirrhosis are described. In the first patient, maternal death occurred postpartum due to bleeding esophageal varices and liver and renal failure. Postmortem examination revealed advanced nodular cirrhosis and thrombosis of the splenic and portal veins. The infant was premature but did well and did not become infected despite the detection of HBsAg in the cord blood. Nine members of the patient's immediate family were tested; the blood of one sibling of the patient was found to be HBsAg+ and samples from 5 other members were f

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of two novel assays, namely the iTACT-hepatitis B surface antigen (iTACT-HBsAg) and iTACT-hepatitis B core-related antigen (iTACT-HBcrAg) assays, in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients with HBsAg seroclearance (SC) documented by standard assays.
METHODS: HBsAg and HBcrAg were measured by the two iTACT-assays in 556 serial sera collected from 96 CHB patients at 7 different time points spanning from 5 years before to 10 years after SC and 120 HBsAg-negative, anti-HBc-positive individuals. As controls, 60 seronegative individuals, who were n

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) cannot be completely eliminated from infected hepatocytes due to the existence of intrahepatic covalently closed circular DNA (cccDNA). Serological biomarkers reflect intrahepatic viral replicative activity as non-invasive alternatives to liver biopsy. Hepatitis B core-related antigen (HBcrAg) is a novel biomarker that has an important role in chronic hepatitis B (CHB), because it correlates with serum HBV DNA and intrahepatic cccDNA. In clinical cases with undetectable serum HBV DNA or loss of HBsAg, HBcrAg still can be detected and the decrease in HBcrAg levels is sig

Hepatitis B (surface) antigen (HBSAg) was found in the serum of 8 out of 4 245 women attending the antenatal clinic of the Queen Victoria Maternity Hospital Seven (0, 16%) were asymptomatic carriers of the antigen, while the eigth suffered from polyarteritis nodosa. Seven of the 8 babies born to these mothers were followed-up over periods of up to 18 months, and 1 has become a chronic carrier of HBSAg. The antigen was not detected in the colostrum (breast milk) of the 6 positive mothers tested, but it was present in amniotic fluid, placenta and cord blood of some of the mother-infant couples.

BACKGROUND: Safe nucleos(t)ide analogue discontinuation in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is an unmet need. We aimed to investigate whether combining hepatitis B virus (HBV) RNA and hepatitis B core-related antigen (HBcrAg) could perform satisfactorily in predicting off-treatment outcomes.
METHODS: The evaluation cohort included 127 hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-positive patients from a multicenter prospective trial who stopped telbivudine-based therapy after achieving HBeAg seroconversion and HBV DNA < 50 IU/mL for > 48 weeks. As validation, 59 patients treated with entecavir or tenofovir before

A high rate of hepatitis B virus (HBV) antigen carriers among patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has been recorded from areas of endemic HBV infections in Africa and Asia, but there are only rare and contradictory data for Europe. 12 specimens of resected liver tissue were immunohistologically investigated for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) as well as for hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAg). HBsAg was contained in non-tumorous liver tissue in 66 per cent of these cases. In two cases detection of HBcAg in the liver provided evidence to replication of the virus. HBcAg plus HBsAg were
