BACKGROUND: The utility of hepatitis B immunoglobulin (HBIg) in hepatitis D virus (HDV)-reactivation prophylaxis remains contentious. This study compared liver transplant (LT) patients based on whether they received perioperative HBIg to assess its protective effect against HDV reactivation.
METHODS: Fifty-seven recipients with hepatitis B virus (HBV) and HBV/HDV, who were at least 1 year posttransplantation as of January 1, 2021, were enrolled in this single-center study. Tests for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), anti-HDV antibody, and quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain

The hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis D virus (HDV) infections cause liver disease, including hepatitis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). HBV infection remains a major global health problem. In 2019, 296 million people were living with chronic hepatitis B and about 5% of them were co-infected with HDV. In vitro cell culture systems are instrumental in the development of therapeutic targets. Cell culture systems contribute to identifying molecular mechanisms for HBV and HDV propagation, finding drug targets for antiviral therapies, and testing antiviral agents. Current HBV the

AIM: To study the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis D virus (HDV) replication interferences in patients with chronic hepatitis delta infected with different HBV genotypes.
METHODS: We conducted a transversal study including 68 chronic hepatitis delta (CHD) (37 HIV-positive) patients and a control group of 49 chronic hepatitis B (CHB) (22 HIV-positive) patients. In addition, a dynamic follow-up was performed in 16 CHD patients. In all the samples, the surface antigen of hepatitis B (HBsAg) serum titers were analyzed with the Monolisa HBsAg Ultra system (Bio-Rad), using as quantification st

BACKGROUND/AIM: Hepatitis D virus (HDV) superinfection in patients with chronic hepatitis B leads to accelerated liver injury, early cirrhosis, and decompensation. It may be speculated that hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) may differ in these patients from hepatitis B virus (HBV) monoinfection. The aim of this study was to compare clinical aspects of hepatocellular carcinoma in patients of hepatitis D with HBV monoinfection.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 92 consecutive HCC cases seropositive for antibody against HDV antigen (HDV group) were compared with 92 HBsAg-positive and anti-HDV-negati

BACKGROUND: Superinfection with the hepatitis D virus (HDV) leads to a more aggressive form of chronic hepatitis B. While around 5% of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive individuals are estimated to be hepatitis B virus (HBV)-HDV dually infected globally, the time point of superinfection is unknown and repeated HDV testing is not yet supported by international guidelines. Inci-D is a post hoc analysis from 2 prospective cohorts to evaluate the HDV superinfection rate.
METHOD: The Inci-D cohort consists of 2 HBV cohorts of clinical meta-data and stored plasma samples or dried-blood s

Chronic hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection always occurs as a coinfection with hepatitis B virus (HBV) and is the most severe form of viral hepatitis, associated with a high risk of cirrhosis, liver cancer and death. Effective treatment is now available for HDV-HBV coinfection and HDV screening is recommended for all people living with HBV, yet most people in Australia with HDV-HBV are diagnosed too late to prevent complications. This article calls for an urgent change in HDV testing policy and funding to implement reflex HDV antibody (anti-HDV) testing for all people diagnosed with HBV infecti

To evaluate the profile of hepatitis D virus replication and the corresponding immunoresponse after acute hepatitis D virus infection, sera from 50 patients with acute hepatitis D (36 with acute hepatitis B virus-hepatitis D virus coinfection and 14 HBsAg carriers with hepatitis D virus superinfection) were investigated for the presence of hepatitis D virus RNA and other serological hepatitis D virus markers. During the first week after onset of symptoms, hepatitis D virus RNA was detected by spot hybridization with a similar frequency among patients with coinfection (64%) and those with super

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis D virus-hepatitis B virus (HDV-HBV) co-infection accelerates liver disease progression and increases the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma, but the immunopathogenic mechanism of its combination with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) has not been clarified. This study reveals for the first time that HDV may induce AIH through abnormalities in immunoregulation in two specific cases. This is the first report of HDV-HBV co-infected patients who did not receive interferon therapy and achieved serological conversion and histological remission by combining antiviral (entecavir) with imm

Hepatitis D virus (HDV) is a satellite RNA virus of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) infecting an estimated 12 million people worldwide. Chronic HDV infection is causing the most severe form of chronic viral hepatitis, leading to a rapid progression of chronic inflammation to fibrosis, cirrhosis, liver decompensation and cancer. The detailed mechanisms responsible for HDV pathogenicity and its contribution to the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are not clearly understood. This review aims to summarize the current knowledge of HDV-induced injuries, which gradually accumulate and increa

Current treatments against the hepatitis B virus (HBV) efficiently inhibit viral replication but rarely lead to functional cure, defined as the loss of HBsAg. Persisting transcription from intranuclear forms of viral DNA, independently from viral replication, limits the possibility of a robust clearing response of the host against the virus. The new therapeutic approaches target either the transcription, with specific oligonucleotides, the capsid assembly or the release of complete viral particles from infected hepatocytes. Some clinical trials seem highly promising. Although the clinical evol

INTRODUCTION: The Hepatitis Delta Virus (HDV) is a defective, single-stranded RNA virusoid encoding for a single protein, the Hepatitis Delta Antigen (HDAg), which requires the hepatitis B virus (HBV) envelope protein (HBsAg) for its transmission. Currently, hepatitis D is the most aggressive form of viral hepatitis and treatment options are limited. Worldwide 12 million people are chronically infected with HDV being at high risk for progression to cirrhosis and development of liver cancer.
OBJECTIVES: Although it is well established that Mongolia is the country with the highest prevalence of

Chronic hepatitis D infection results in the most severe form of chronic viral hepatitis but currently lacks effective treatment options. Therapy with pegylated interferon alpha is recommended for finite treatment duration by major liver societies. Still, it is plagued by low rates of sustained virologic response (SVR) and frequent relapses even if SVR is achieved. Recently, a wave of investigational therapies has come under evaluation, including bulevirtide, lonafarnib, pegylated interferon lambda, and REP-2139 creating excitement with this viral infection. However, there has been significant

Human hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis D virus (HDV) cause acute and chronic infections. The latter poses a serious public health threat as it is the major cause of chronic hepatitis, liver failure, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In nature, HBV and HDV have a narrow host range and highly hepatotropic, only infecting the hepatocytes of humans and a few primates. The elucidation of cell entry mechanism by HBV has made great progress in recent years, which strongly promotes the establishment of new HBV infection models and the development of viral entry inhibitors. The study

Chronic hepatitis D virus infection is the most severe form of viral hepatitis. Antiviral treatment is urgently needed to prevent patients from developing end stage liver disease or hepatocellular carcinoma. Treatment options were limited to off-label use of pegylated interferon alfa until conditional approval of bulevirtide by the EMA (European Medicines Agency) in July 2020. However, several other antiviral compounds are currently investigated and represent promising agents for the treatment of chronic HDV infection.

Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) infection of humans was first reported in 1977, and now it is now estimated that 15-20 million people are infected worldwide. Infection with HDV can be an acute or chronic process that occurs only in patients with an hepatitis B virus infection. Chronic HDV infection commonly results in the most rapidly progressive form of viral hepatitis; it is the chronic viral infection that is most likely to lead to cirrhosis, and it is associated with an increased risk of hepatocellular carcinoma. HDV infection is the only chronic human hepatitis virus infection without a thera

Chronic infections with hepatitis C virus (HCV) are associated with various autoimmune manifestations, i.e. mixed cryoglobulinemia, membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, autoimmune thyroid diseases, sporadic porphyria cutanea tarda and B cell lymphoma. Since exacerbation of hepatitis occurs in 5-10% of HCV patients receiving interferon-alpha treatment and may be successfully treated by immunosuppression afterwards, hepatitis C was also suspected to be associated with autoimmune hepatitis. LKM3 autoantibodies in chronic hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection and epitope recognition are discussed

Two hundred and sixty-three adult licensed, 233 adult and 157 teenage unlicensed prostitutes from Taiwan were studied for prevalence and risk factors of hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection. The hepatitis B carrier rate among the three groups was 21, 15 and 20%, respectively, not significantly different from that of the general population in this area. However, the prevalence of HDV infection among carrier prostitutes was 55, 36 and 16%, respectively, much higher than that in general hepatitis B carriers. Univariate analysis revealed that the history of conducting paid sex for more than 12 months
