Human hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis D virus (HDV) cause acute and chronic infections. The latter poses a serious public health threat as it is the major cause of chronic hepatitis, liver failure, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In nature, HBV and HDV have a narrow host range and highly hepatotropic, only infecting the hepatocytes of humans and a few primates. The elucidation of cell entry mechanism by HBV has made great progress in recent years, which strongly promotes the establishment of new HBV infection models and the development of viral entry inhibitors. The study

Hepatitis E is an acute human liver disease in healthy individuals which may eventually become chronic. It is caused by the hepatitis E virus (HEV) and can have a zoonotic origin. Nearly 57,000 people die yearly from hepatitis E-related conditions. The disease is endemic in both developing and developed countries with distinct epidemiologic profiles. In developing countries, the disease is associated with inadequate water treatment, while in developed countries, transmission is associated with animal contact and the ingestion of raw or uncooked meat, especially liver. All human HEV are grouped

Molecular biology techniques are now a vital part of hepatitis virology, with a central role in studies of diagnosis, epidemiology, virology, pathogenesis, and natural history of infection. Cloning of the genome of hepatitis E virus has allowed its tentative classification as a calici- or related virus, and is the first step toward the development of a vaccine. Long-term implications of hepatitis C for groups such as children with hemophilia, thalassemia, and even leukemia can be better understood by comparison of virus load measured by molecular amplification of the plasma viral RNA with the

OBJECTIVES: Association between acute pancreatitis and acute viral hepatitis (AVH) is more frequent than previously thought. Most cases are hepatitis A or B virus related. Only 6 cases of acute pancreatitis with acute hepatitis E virus (HEV)-related hepatitis has been reported so far.
METHODS: We analyzed the hospital records of 334 patients of acute pancreatitis admitted from December 2004 to March 2006. Seven patients had an associated AVH.
RESULTS: Of these, 4 had HEV-related and 3 had hepatitis A virus-related AVH. All but one were young males who presented with abdominal pain during the

Theiler disease (serum hepatitis or idiopathic acute hepatic necrosis) has long been suspected to have a viral etiology. Four viruses have been described in association with hepatitis in horses. Further investigation suggests equine pegivirus and Theiler disease-associated virus (a second pegivirus) are neither hepatotropic nor pathogenic. Nonprimate hepacivirus (NPHV) causes subclinical disease in experimental models and has been associated with hepatitis in some clinical cases. Equine parvovirus-hepatitis (EqPV-H) experimentally causes subclinical-to-clinical liver disease and is found in th

Although newer and more effective treatments are now available for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, non-HCV viral hepatitis remains an important cause of liver disease, especially among HIV-infected individuals. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is the leading cause of cirrhosis worldwide, and approximately one-quarter of patients with cirrhosis develop decompensated liver disease within 5 years. Initial treatment for chronic HBV infection includes peginterferon alfa, entecavir, and tenofovir. Approximately 15 million of the estimated 350 million individuals with chronic HBV infection have evidence of

Liver cancer is the most common cancer in males in Thailand and the third in females. A high incidence of cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is estimated in the northeast of Thailand. Chronic infection with Opisthorchis viverrini (OV) is the major risk factor for development of CCA. It has been demonstrated that HCV infection is a risk factor for CCA in non - endemic area of OV infection. We examined the association of HBV and HCV and risk of CCA in the northeast Thailand. All cases of CCA were recruited between 1999 and 2001 from Nakhon Phanom provincial hospital and all community hospitals in the prov

Viral hepatitis is the most common cause of acute and chronic hepatitis. The term, viral hepatitis, generally refers to infections resulting from one of the hepatotrophic viruses: hepatitis A, B, C, D and E. As hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) mainly cause chronic hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma, early diagnosis, prevention and viral elimination are necessary. Eight genotypes of HBV have been detected by sequence divergence of >8% in the entire HBV genome, and designated by capital letters from A to H in the order of documentation. They have distinct geographical dist

Oncogenesis is a multifactorial process in which environmental, genetic and infectious factors are variably involved. A possible role of specific viruses has been suggested in at least 15% of human cancers. Hepatitis C virus (HCV), which is both hepato- and lymphotropic, is responsible for various liver disorders, i.e. chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis and hepatocelluar carcinoma, as well as for a constellation of extrahepatic immune-mediated manifestations, among which is mixed cryoglobulinaemia. This is a systemic disorder secondary to a chronic, benign B-lymphocyte proliferation, which in some s

INTRODUCTION: Beginning in early 2022, clusters of severe pediatric hepatitis were reported in Europe and the United States. To date, no cause has been identified although human adenovirus 41 has been proposed in a proportion of cases. We examined population data >11 years for hepatitis clusters in Victoria, Australia, and whether any were spatiotemporally associated with community transmission of common respiratory viruses.
METHODS: We used SaTScan to analyze for clusters of pediatric hepatitis and respiratory adenoviruses in Victoria. Negative binomial regression analysis was performed to d

Hepatitis A virus (HAV) and hepatitis E virus (HEV) are significant human pathogens and are responsible for a substantial proportion of cases of severe acute hepatitis worldwide. Genetically, both viruses are heterogeneous and are classified into several genotypes that differ in their geographical distribution and risk group association. There is, however, little evidence that variants of HAV or HEV differ antigenically or in their propensity to cause severe disease. Genetically more divergent but primarily hepatotropic variants of both HAV and HEV have been found in several mammalian species,

Globally, over half a billion people are persistently infected with hepatitis B (HBV) and/or hepatitis C viruses. Chronic HBV and HCV infection frequently lead to fibrosis, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Co-infections with hepatitis delta virus (HDV), a subviral satellite requiring HBV for its propagation, accelerates the progression of liver disease toward HCC. The mechanisms by which these viruses cause malignant transformation, culminating in HCC, remain incompletely understood, partially due to the lack of adequate experimental models for dissecting these complex disease pro

In 189 anti-HIV positive subjects (130 males and 59 females; median age 32 years, range 17-57) we evaluated the prevalence of patients with hepatitis infections, the role of parenteral and sexual risk factors on the acquisition of these infections and the reciprocal influence between HIV and HCV infections. HCV infection was detected in 53.9% of cases and HBV infection in 8.4%. In only 32% of our patients no marker of hepatitis virus infection was detected. The presence of a hepatitis virus infection was associated to drug addiction; indeed in 91 drug abusers HIV/HCV co-infection was present i

Most cases of "essential" mixed cryoglobulinemia are due to chronic infection with the hepatitis C virus (HCV). Although cryoglobulinemia is a common finding in HCV-infected patients, it is rarely symptomatic. However, some patients develop diffuse vasculitis predominantly affecting small-caliber blood vessels, particularly those of the skin. Treatment with steroids, immunosuppressives, and more recently interferon alpha is effective in the short and medium term but fails to provide a permanent cure for the vasculitis. Cryoglobulinemia associated with hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is less

The occurrence of a common source hepatitis A epidemic among the residents of a New England state mental institution where hepatitis B is hyperendemic provided an opportunity to observe concurrent infections with both agents. Nine HBsAg-positive individuals developed hepatitis A infections documented by hepatitis A antibody seroconversion in eight. The incidence of hepatitis A infections in susceptible HBsAg-positive persons (67%) did not differ from that in HBsAg-negative individuals (63%). The icteric to anicteric infection ratio in the HBsAG-positives (1:1.7) was similar to that in the nega

Chronic viral hepatitis is caused by hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), or hepatitis D virus (HDV). Despite different replication strategies, all of these viruses rely on secretion through the host endoplasmic reticulum-Golgi pathway, providing potential host targets for antiviral therapy. Knockdown of transmembrane 6 superfamily member 2 (TM6SF2) in virus cell culture models reduced secretion of infectious HCV virions, HDV virions, and HBV subviral particles. Moreover, in a cohort of people with hepatitis B, a TM6SF2 polymorphism (rs58542926 CT/TT, which causes protein misfoldi

OBJECTIVES: Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection remains a major health problem worldwide. This infection is more severe when combined with hepatitis Delta virus (HDV). Moreover, Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) malaria infection during pregnancy can have severe consequences for the mother and the newborn. Importantly, the manifestation of these three infections has never been described to date.
METHODS: Thus, we conducted a prospective study, between May 27, 2022, and April 15, 2023, and we investigated these three infections in 260 pregnant women aged 24 to 46 years, in Gabon and evaluated t
