Dual-Strategy Resource Allocation in an Invasive Clonal Plant to Counter Foliar Herbivory for Rapid Recovery.

Clonal integration (i.e., sharing resources via interconnected ramets) is recognized as a key mechanism enabling clonal plants to mitigate herbivory. However, how the magnitude and direction of this response vary between invasive and native clonal plants under spatially heterogeneous herbivory remains unresolved. In this study, we subjected the invasive alligator weed, Alternanthera philoxeroides, and its native congener, sessile joyweed A. sessilis, to varying feeding position treatments by the flea beetle Agasicles hygrophila (damage to apical ramets, basal ramets, or both ramets) and herbiv

The plant hormone salicylic acid interacts with the mechanism of anti-herbivory conferred by fungal endophytes in grasses.

The plant hormone salicylic acid (SA) is recognized as an effective defence against biotrophic pathogens, but its role as regulator of beneficial plant symbionts has received little attention. We studied the relationship between the SA hormone and leaf fungal endophytes on herbivore defences in symbiotic grasses. We hypothesize that the SA exposure suppresses the endophyte reducing the fungal-produced alkaloids. Because of the role that alkaloids play in anti-herbivore defences, any reduction in their production should make host plants more susceptible to herbivores. Lolium multiflorum plants

Defense of cabbages against herbivore cutworm Spodoptera litura under Cd stress and insect herbivory stress simultaneously.

Biotic (e.g., heavy metal) and abiotic stress (e.g., insect attack) can affect plant chemical defense, but little is known about the changes in plant defense when they occur concurrently. Herein, the impacts of heavy metal cadmium (Cd) stress and insect herbivory stress on the direct and indirect defense of two cultivar cabbages of Brassica campestris, the low-Cd cultivar Lvbao701 and the high-Cd cultivar Chicaixin No.4, against the herbivore cutworm Spodoptera litura were investigated. Although 10 mg kg-1 Cd stress alone inhibited leaf secondary metabolites (total phenolics, flavonoids), it r

Changes in clonal poplar leaf chemistry caused by stem galls alter herbivory and leaf litter decomposition.

Gall-inducing insects are highly specialized herbivores that modify the phenotype of their host plants. Beyond the direct manipulation of plant morphology and physiology in the immediate environment of the gall, there is also evidence of plant-mediated effects of gall-inducing insects on other species of the assemblages and ecosystem processes associated with the host plant. We analysed the impact of gall infestation by the aphid Pemphigus spirothecae on chemical leaf traits of clonal Lombardy poplars (Populus nigra var. italica) and the subsequent effects on intensity of herbivory and decompo

Insect herbivory time-course reveals unique temporal transcriptomic responses in resistant and susceptible grapevines.

Grapevine (Vitis) is a crop of global importance. Insect pests, such as Popillia japonica (Japanese beetle), threaten yields of this high value crop. Vitis labrusca (accession 'GREM4') exhibits the highly-advantageous trait of resistance to Japanese beetles while Vitis vinifera is susceptible (cultivar 'PN40024'). Herein, we undertook an insect herbivory time-course transcriptomic study to identify gene expression differences, and associated processes and pathways, which differ, both temporally and spatially, between 'GREM4' and 'PN40024' under insect herbivory. Upon herbivory, the number of s

Aboveground herbivory induced jasmonates disproportionately reduce plant reproductive potential by facilitating root nematode infestation.

Different plant feeders, including insects and parasitic nematodes, can influence each other by triggering systemic changes in their shared host plants. In most cases, however, the underlying mechanisms are unclear, and the consequences for plant fitness are not well understood. We studied the interaction between leaf feeding Manduca sexta caterpillars and root parasitic nematodes in Nicotiana attenuata. Simulated M. sexta attack increased the abundance of root parasitic nematodes in the field and facilitated Meloidogyne incognita reproduction in the glasshouse. Intact jasmonate biosynthesis w

Rising herbivory pressure of Sarpa salpa and the emerging threat to Southern European marine forests.

Climate change (CC) is driving shifts in marine ecosystems, particularly affecting temperate and subtropical marine forests, which are critical for biodiversity and ecosystem stability. Dominated by canopy-forming seaweeds, these forests are sensitive to CC-induced stressors, such as rising temperatures and tropicalisation, which favour turf-forming algae and increase the abundance of herbivorous fish, threatening ecosystem structure and function. Along the western coast of Portugal in Southern Europe, the herbivorous fish Sarpa salpa plays a key role in tropicalisation, potentially exacerbati

Phylogenetic patterns of tolerance to herbivory and underlying suite of traits: phylogenetic signal and trade-offs.

When herbivory is inevitable, plants can cope with it through tolerance, buffering its negative effects on plant fitness. Macroevolutionary patterns of tolerance to herbivory may improve our understanding about its evolution. Here, we explore the phylogenetic patterns of tolerance to herbivory and underlying functional traits, as well as the potential evolutionary constraints in the forms of fitness costs and a trade-off with resistance across the genus Datura. We performed a common garden experiment with simulated herbivory (defoliation) and analyzed data within a phylogenetic comparative exp

Herbivory by Leaf-Cutting Ants: Exploring the Jasmonate Response in Host and Non-Host Plants.

Leaf-cutting ants (Formicidae; Atta spp., Acromyrmex spp.) cut off pieces of leaves and other plant tissue and feed it to their symbiotic fungi. As this foraging behavior poses an imminent threat to agriculture, leaf-cutting ants are considered as pests of huge ecologically and economically importance. Consequently, research on leaf-cutting ants focused on their foraging decisions and interactions with their cultivated symbiotic fungi, whereas their effect on the attacked plants, apart from the loss of plant tissue, remains largely unknown. In this study, we investigated the consequences of an

The Interplay of Nitric Oxide and Nitrosative Modifications in Maize: Implications for Aphid Herbivory and Drought Stress.

Nitric oxide (NO) and other reactive nitrogen species (RNS) are considered to be signaling molecules in higher plants involved in the regulation of growth and development processes. However, the molecular mechanisms of their formation, removal, and participation in plant responses to adverse environmental stimuli remain largely unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the influence of selected single stresses and combined stresses (i.e., Rhopalosiphum padi L. aphid infestation, drought, aphid infestation, and drought) and post-stress recovery on the contents of NO and peroxynitr

Application of methyl jasmonate and salicylic acid lead to contrasting effects on the plant's metabolome and herbivory.

Phytohormone applications are used to mimic herbivory and can induce plant defences. This study investigated (i) metabolomic changes in leaf tissues of Jacobaea vulgaris and J. aquatica after methyl jasmonate (MeJA) and salicylic acid (SA) applications and (ii) the effects on a leaf-chewing, a leaf-mining and a piercing-sucking herbivore. MeJA treated leaves showed clearly different metabolomic profiles than control leaves, while the differences in metabolomic profiles between SA treated leaves and control leaves were less clear. More NMR peaks increased than decreased after MeJA treatment whi

Herbivory-associated degradation of tomato trichomes and its impact on biological control of Aculops lycopersici.

Tomato plants have their leaves, petioles and stems covered with glandular trichomes that protect the plant against two-spotted spider mites and many other herbivorous arthropods, but also hinder searching by phytoseiid mites and other natural enemies of these herbivores. This trichome cover creates competitor-free and enemy-free space for the tomato russet mite (TRM) Aculops lycopersici (Acari: Eriophyidae), being so minute that it can seek refuge and feed inbetween the glandular trichomes on tomato cultivars currently used in practice. Indeed, several species of predatory mites tested for bi

Tree Species Diversity, Canopy Height, and Soil Nutrient Availability Shape Leaf Insect Herbivory in Zhoushan Archipelago, China.

Plant-insect interactions regulate ecosystem processes and productivity. Most studies have focused on the effect of plant diversity on insect herbivory in grasslands, croplands, and natural forests. However, the direction of this effect remains controversial. Unlike these ecosystems, island ecosystems possess distinct geographical features and provide natural experimental settings for studying trophic interactions. Nevertheless, the effects of plant diversity, island characteristics, and their interactions on insect herbivory in such environments have scarcely been explored. To test the relati

The Arabidopsis immune regulator SRFR1 dampens defences against herbivory by Spodoptera exigua and parasitism by Heterodera schachtii.

Plants have developed diverse mechanisms to fine tune defence responses to different types of enemy. Cross-regulation between signalling pathways may allow the prioritization of one response over another. Previously, we identified SUPPRESSOR OF rps4-RLD1 (SRFR1) as a negative regulator of ENHANCED DISEASE SUSCEPTIBILITY1 (EDS1)-dependent effector-triggered immunity against the bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato strain DC3000 expressing avrRps4. The use of multiple stresses is a powerful tool to further define gene function. Here, we examined whether SRFR1 also impacts resistanc

Silverleaf Nightshade (Solanum elaeagnifolium) Undergoes Guild-Specific Transcriptomic Reprogramming Against Chewing Versus Piercing Sucking Herbivory.

Solanum elaeagnifolium (silverleaf nightshade, SLN) is a globally invasive perennial weed with reproductive plasticity and complex defence systems that significantly impact crop yields by invading fields of staple, commercial and ornamental crops. Despite being a host to multiple insect herbivores, the molecular programming enabling its rapid adaptation to defend against diverse feeding guilds remains poorly resolved. Here, we report a comprehensive de novo transcriptomic assembly and comparative analysis of S. elaeagnifolium challenged by two distinct herbivores: the piercing-sucking generali

Diagrammatical scale to quantify herbivory severity on feijoa leaf caused by Paraulaca dives (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae).

The aims of this work were to characterize the damage caused by Paraulaca dives in feijoa (Acca sellowiana) and develop a diagrammatic scale to evaluate the severity of herbivory. The evaluations were carried out in a feijoa progenies orchard with eight-year-old. The beetles caused damage mainly on leaves, from October to December (spring season). The distribution of beetles in the orchard occurred randomly, not following a defined pattern of incidence. The diagrammatic scale of herbivory severity was represented by seven levels (1%, 3%, 5%, 7%, 15%, 32%, and 55% of the leaf area consumed). Th

The impact of non-native trees on galling and herbivory in New York City across space and time.

Cities and suburbs frequently plant native and non-native trees as foundation species, with non-natives cultivated in these areas for centuries while remaining non-invasive. Although previous research has found that native trees often host more arthropods, studies have not simultaneously looked across space and time to determine the consistency of tree origin on urban arthropods. We combined varied methods across spatial and temporal scales in New York City to test if native tree leaves consistently have more insect and mite interactions than long-established non-native trees, predicting stron

Aquatic sloths (Thalassocnus) from the Miocene of Chile and the evolution of marine mammal herbivory in the Pacific Ocean.

The evolution of marine mammals in South America includes unique and extinct lineages found nowhere else in the world, such as the walrus-convergent whale Odobenocetops and multiple aquatic sloth species belonging to the genus Thalassocnus. Aquatic sloths have been collected from Mio-Pliocene marine deposits in Peru and Chile, and terrestrial deposits in Argentina. In Chile, these occurrences range over 800 km across several basins from the Bahía Inglesa, Coquimbo, and Horcón formations. Here we report aquatic sloth material belonging to the species Thalassocnus natans from a new locality, Nor

Spider-Plant Interaction: The Role of Extrafloral Nectaries in Spider Attraction and Their Influence on Plant Herbivory and Reproduction.

Spiders, abundant and diverse arthropods which occur in vegetation, have received little attention in studies investigating spider-plant interactions, especially in plants which have extrafloral nectaries (EFNs). This study examines whether spiders attracted to EFNs on the plant Heteropterys pteropetala (Malpighiaceae) function as biological protectors, mitigating leaf herbivory and positively impacting plant fitness, through manipulative experiments. Spiders are attracted to EFNs because, in addition to consuming the resource offered by these structures, they also consume the herbivores that

Does leaf flushing in the dry season affect leaf traits and herbivory in a tropical dry forest?

In tropical dry forests (TDFs), stem-succulent deciduous species produce leaves during the dry season which coincides with the period of lower herbivore abundance. In this study, we evaluated the effects of abiotic factors (precipitation and day length) on the vegetative phenology of three stem-succulent deciduous species (Cochlospermum vitifolium, Commiphora leptophloeos, and Manihot anomala) during 2 years. In addition, we compared leaf damage by herbivores and leaf defensive traits (specific leaf area, thickness, and content of phenolic compounds) on leaf cohorts produced before and during
