Metacercariae of species of the genus Apophallus Lühe, 1909, infecting the fins and skin of freshwater fishes, frequently cause black spot disease. Two species, Apophallus muehlingi (Jägerskiöld, 1899) and A. donicus (Skrjabin & Lindtrop, 1919), are known to occur in Hungarian fishes. It has generally been thought that metacercariae of A. muehlingi infect cyprinid fishes, whereas those of A. donicus develop in percids. As part of a morphological, experimental and molecular study, metacercariae were collected from 99 infected specimens of five cyprinid hosts (Abramis brama, Blicca bjoerkna, Cho

Centrocestus formosanus is a foodborne intestinal trematode that is native to Asia and has been introduced into the Americas and Europe. Although there are several studies of C. formosanus in definitive vertebrate hosts (birds and mammals, including humans), and in intermediate vertebrate hosts (fish and amphibians), there is little published information regarding interaction with its transmitting mollusc. In this study we studied the miracidial development of C. formosanus using a mouse as a source of eggs. Adult parasites were maintained in water in order to develop miracidia in intrauterine

Ornamental fish, Xiphophorus maculatus, were imported from Singapore to Denmark for distribution to local aquarists. Importers observed lethargic and erratic swimming patterns among fish and forwarded a total of 30 fish for pathological examination to a university diagnostic service. All fish were diagnosed infected with encysted Centrocestus sp. metacercariae in gills (prevalence of 100% and mean intensity of 454.5 ± 161.9 parasites per fish). Metacercariae were identified by morphological and molecular methods. Cysts (mean length 163.3 ± 13.7 μm and mean width 113.3 ± 10.6 μm) contained a be

Here we describe a new heterophyid species, Heterophyes yacyretana n. sp., and resolve its life cycle experimentally. We found the prosobranch snail Aylacostoma chloroticum in Candelaria, Province of Misiones, Argentina (a sector of the High Paraná River affected by the Yacyretá Dam), naturally infected with opisthorchioid cercariae. These cercariae lacked pigmented eyespots as well as body pigment and possessed 7 pairs of penetration glands arranged in 2 lateral bands, together with 18 pairs of flame cells and a V-shaped excretory vesicle. We exposed specimens of 21 fish species to emerging c

Adults of a species of Cryptocotyle were found infecting the intestine of the kelp gull, Larus dominicanus Lichtenstein, 1823, and metacercariae were found in the fins and muscle of the galaxiid fish, Galaxias platei Steindachner, 1898 (local name "puyen grande"), in Nahuel Huapi National Park (Patagonia). Morphometrics and genetic markers of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase (COI) and ribosomal internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) confirmed that adults and metacercariae were conspecific and represent a new species, Cryptocotyle dominicana n. sp. The only congener known from South America (Cryp

Studies on distribution of parasites are important to reveal the ecology of host-parasites interactions. The objective of the study was to compare the variations in heterophyid encysted metacercariae (EMC) infection in freshwater and brackishwater fish hosts and variation in parasitological descriptors of metacercariae infection during different seasons. The status of infection with heterophyid EMCs in the second intermediate host fishes from brackishand freshwater resources was investigated. Seasonal changes in the occurrence of EMCs in different fish hosts were monitored in a longitudinal fi

The liver fluke, Opisthorchis viverrini, and the minute intestinal fluke, Haplorchis taichui, are prevalent in many Asian countries. This study analysed the patterns of infections of O. viverrini and H. taichui in Lahanam and Thakhamlien villages (Savannakhet Province, Lao PDR), in two cross-sectional investigations. Out of a total of 207 human participants, post-anthelmintic treatment positivity rates for expelled worms were 170 (82.1%) for H. taichui and 65 (31.4%) for O. viverrini. Both these species co-exist in the study villages. When each parasite was analysed separately, H. taichui infe

The fishborne zoonotic trematode Haplorchis pumilio (Looss, 1896) is here reported for the first time in Brazil based on morphological, experimental and molecular studies. Pleurolophocercous cercariae emerged from the invasive snail Melanoides tuberculata collected in the municipality of Ceará-Mirim, state of Rio Grande do Norte, Northeast region of Brazil, in November 2018, were used for experimental infection of guppies, Poecilia reticulata. Metacercariae were extracted from the caudal musculature of these fishes and were used to infect mice. Adult parasites recovered in the small intestine

Galactosomum nagasakiense n. sp. (Digenea: Heterophyidae), the causative parasite of trematode whirling disease of marine fish, is described, based on the specimens collected from the black-tailed gull, Larus crassirostris in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. The new species belongs to the cochleariformum group, and is different from the three species in the group: G. cochleare (Diesing, 1850) in the larger oral sucker and phaynx and smaller eggs, G. cochleariformum (Rudolphi, 1819) in the smaller oral sucker and pharynx and smaller eggs, and G. spinetum (Braun, 1901) in the uterus which extends ant

Trematode whirling disease (TWD), caused by Galactosomum nagasakiense (Heterophyidae), affects a wide range of wild and cultured marine fish, with occasional mass mortalities reported in aquaculture since the 1960s. Fish serve as the second intermediate host, while the black-tailed gull Larus crassirostris has been identified as the definitive host. However, the first intermediate host has remained unidentified for decades. Field surveys were conducted in Tsushima, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan, an endemic region of TWD, aiming to identify the gastropod first intermediate host. Among 1341 snails

As a matter of fact, there has not been any reportage of the parasite of Ascocotyle (Phagicola) longa Ransom, 1920 from the Caspian Sea, Iran. During two years, April 2017 until 2018, 158 specimens of mullet fish, Chelon auratus and Chelon saliens (Risso, 1810) were collected and carefully examined considering the standard parasitological methods. Interestingly, the metacercaria was found in the stomach and intestine of the mullets. Morphological and morphometric analyses indicated that this parasite species belongs to Ascoctyle (Phagicola) longa. Overall infection mean intensity (52.1±128.3),

BACKGROUND: Heterophyidiasis is now a major public health threat in many tropical countries. Species in the trematode family Heterophyidae infecting humans include Centrocestus formosanus, Haplorchis pumilio, H. taichui, H. yokogawai, Procerovum varium and Stellantchasmus falcatus. For molecular phylogenetic and systematic studies on trematodes, we need more prospective markers for taxonomic identification and classification. This study provides near-complete ribosomal transcription units (rTU) from Haplorchis pumilio and H. taichui and demonstrates the use of 28S rDNA sequences for identifica

The family Heterophyidae includes endoparasitic minute intestinal flukes that are primarily transmitted through the consumption of raw or undercooked fish, causing heterophyidiasis. Several heterophyid species have been reported to infect humans in the Philippines. Heterophyidiasis is diagnosed by detection of parasite ova in stool samples through Kato-Katz stool microscopy, but species identification is challenging due to the morphologically similar eggs of different heterophyid species and other minute intestinal flukes such as Clonorchis and Opisthorchis. This study addresses the need for a

BACKGROUND: Fish-borne zoonotic trematodes (FZT), such as Clonorchis sinensis, Opistorchis viverini (Opisthorchiidae) and intestinal trematodes of the family Heterophyidae, constitute a public health hazard in Vietnam and infections with these trematodes has been linked to consumption of raw or undercooked fish from aquaculture. The FZT transmission pathways, however, are more complicated than just the presence of intermediate snail hosts in aquaculture ponds as ponds may exchange water with surrounding habitats such as rice fields and irrigation canals and thereby these surrounding habitats m

In order to determine the antigenic localization in the tissues of the adult Metagonimus yokogawai, immunogoldlabeling method was applied using serum immunoglobulins(IgG) of cats which were infected with isolated metacercariae from Plecoglossus altivelis. The sectioned worm tissue was embedded in Lowicryl HM 20 medium and stained with infected serum IgG and protein A gold complex(particle size: 12 nm). It was observed by electron microscopy at each tissue of the worm. The gold particles were observed on the tegumental syncytium as well as cytoplasm of tegumental cells and epithelial lamella of

Trematodes are recognized as a group of emerging parasites in tropical countries. We identified a trematode as a cause of ocular granulomas that developed in children who bathed in ponds or rivers in South India. DNA was isolated from patients' surgically excised granulomas and from the trematode cercariae (larvae) released by the snail Melanoides tuberculata in water in which the children bathed. Real-time and conventional PCRs were performed that targeted ribosomal DNA regions spanning the internal transcribed spacer 2 and 28S sequences of this trematode. The PCR-amplified products were subj

Some trematode metacercariae, including marine digeneans belonging to the genus Cryptocotyle, induce black spots in target tissues due to the attraction of fish host melanophores. To promote precise quantification of infection, the counting of black spots has to be confirmed by reliable quantification of metacercariae after tissue digestion. This process ensures the isolation of undamaged parasites for morphological and molecular identification. The aim of this work was to optimize the pepsin digestion protocol and to assess the duration of viability of Cryptocotyle metacercariae in fish post-
