Thestral incognitus, a new genus and species of Pentatomidae from Chile (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae: Pentatominae: Carpocorini).

Thestral incognitus, new genus and species of Pentatomidae (Pentatominae: Carpocorini) is described from central Chile. The relationships among this new genus and other South American genera are discussed.  Also, similarities are noted between Thestral and the Australian genus Poecilotoma. Poecilotoma is tentatively placed in the Carpocorini. A key to aid in the recognition of the genera of Chilean Carpocorini is provided.

Relations between environment, migration and reproduction in a seed bug, Neacoryphus bicrucis (Say) (Heteroptera: Lygaeidae).

The seed feeding bug Neacoryphus bicrucis migrates by flight, often at great altitudes, and evidently is able to disperse over long distances. Non-diapausing females provided with ample food and mates histolyze their flight muscles soon after adult eclosion, and thus undertake very little flight. If food density is below a certain threshold flight ability is retained at a constant high level through most of adult life, while egg production becomes a linear function of the logarithm of food density. Bugs totally starved from adult eclosion onwards survive for a month or more with only a minor d

Population structure and genetic diversity of Triatoma longipennis (Usinger, 1939) (Heteroptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae) in Mexico.

Triatoma longipennis (Usinger) is an important vector of Trypanosoma cruzi in western, central and northern Mexico, due to its wide distribution, high infection rates, and epidemiological indices. However, its population genetics has not been completely characterized. In this study, the intra-specific relationships between different T. longipennis populations were analyzed from seven states in Mexico using mitochondrial cyt B as a marker. Our results show that the population of Jalisco was the most diverse, with the highest genetic and haplotypic variation (Hd = 0.978, π = 0.099 and θ = 0.079)

Feeding preference of Macrolophus caliginosus (Heteroptera: Miridae) on Bemisia tabaci and Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae).

A study of predation choices of Macrolophus caliginosus Wagner (Heteroptera: Miridae) late instars and adults, when offered various developmental stages (eggs and nymphs) of the recently established whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae), was made based on two preference indices. In addition, prey choices of late instars when presented with three ratios of Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae) and B. tabaci at a similar developmental stage (eggs, young or late instars) were assessed. M. caliginosus preferred older nymphs of B. tabaci than any other

Period of time and movement distances between feeding and postfeeding defecation in Triatoma pallidipennis (Heteroptera: Reduviidae).

Defecation time is one of the key parameters used to estimate the efficiency of a Triatomine species as a vector of Trypanosoma cruzi. There is controversy among experts as to whether triatomines that defecate 1-10 min after feeding are efficient vectors, with a different perspective on the distance moved from the host to defecate in the case of triatomines after feeding. The aim of the present study was to determine the period of time and movement distances between feeding and defecation of third-, fourth- and fifth- nymphal instars and adults of Triatoma pallidipennis specimens that defecate

Influence of blood meal source on the biological parameters of Triatoma pallidipennis (Heteroptera: Reduviidae) from Mexico.

Chagas disease is one of the most important vector-borne diseases in Latin America, including Mexico. Triatoma pallidipennis (Stål) (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) is a Mexican triatomine vector commonly associated with different hosts. The influence of six blood meals (rabbits, rats, mice, dogs, cats and chickens) on six biological parameters of the biology of T. pallidipennis was evaluated. A significant difference was found in the period of egg-to-adult development between the five mammalian feeds (mean 195 days) and the chicken feed (221 days). The probability of survival was significantly lower i

Taxonomic review of Sibaria Stål, 1872 (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae: Pentatominae: Carpocorini), with description of a new species.

Sibaria Stål is a genus of Pentatomidae occurring exclusively in the Neotropical region. Since its description, little information has been added to the knowledge of the taxon. The hypothesis of monophyly of Sibaria was recently supported by a phylogenetic analysis based on morphological and molecular data. The purpose of this study is to provide a review of Sibaria, redescribe the valid species, and describe a new species. The genus includes four species: S. andicola Breddin, S. armata (Dallas), S. englemani Rolston, and S. amazonica sp. nov.. Diagnoses, macrophotographs (habitus, external an

Electronic identification key and data base to the genus Chinavia (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) with morphological and distributional data.

The genus Chinavia Orian has a great diversity of species, being distributed in the Nearctic, Neotropical and Afrotropical regions (Rolston 1983; Schwertner Grazia 2007, Grazia Schwertner 2017). The genus is included in the subfamily Pentatominae, tribe Nezarini, whose individuals retain their green coloration after death, average size between 9 and 19 mm, and considered polyphagous (Rolston 1983; Schwertner et al. 2002; Rider 2020). Some species of Chinavia are recorded as important crop pests in different countries (e.g. Matesco et al. 2007; Herbert Toews 2012), and those species are better

Molecular and MALDI-TOF MS identification of swallow bugs Cimex hirundinis (Heteroptera: Cimicidae) and endosymbionts in France.

BACKGROUND: The Cimicidae are obligatory blood-feeding ectoparasites of medical and veterinary importance. We aim in the current study to assess the ability of MALDI-TOF MS to identify Cimex hirundinis swallow bugs collected in house martin nests. METHODS: Swallow bugs were picked out from abandoned nests of house martin swallows and identified morphologically to the species level. The bugs were randomly selected, dissected and then subjected to MALDI-TOF MS and molecular analyses. RESULTS: A total of 65 adults and 50 nymphs were used in the attempt to determine whether this tool could ident

Infection rates and pathogenicity of trypanosomatid gut parasites in the water strider Gerris odontogaster (Zett.) (Heteroptera: Gerridae).

Trypanosomatid flagellates are common protozoan gut parasites of a wide range of insect species. Water striders (Gerridae) harbour the trypanosomatid Blastocrithidia gerridis. Three different populations of the water strider Gerris odontogaster in northern Sweden were sampled to assess the infection rate dynamics of trypanosomatids. The initially very low infection rates (0%-15%) early in the season were followed by a rapid increase during the reproductive period of the water striders, reaching very high levels (80%-90%). The pathogenic effects of trypanosomatids on G. odontogaster adults were

Total and Methylmercury of Suaeda heteroptera Wetland Soil Response to a Salinity Gradient Under Wetting and Drying Conditions.

Mercury (Hg) methylation could occur in freshwater ecosystems with low or high salinity. However, few studies are available about the effects of salinity change on mercury(Hg) release and methylation. In-situ experiments using Suaeda heteroptera wetland soil column from the Liaohe estuary were performed to decipher how total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) contents change under fluctuant salinity and wet and dry soil conditions. Salinity gradients were set to 0.50% (S1), 1.00% (S2), 1.50% (S3) and 1.80% (S4), and pure deionized water was used as a blank control (CK). Wet and dry soil co

On the synonymy of Dymantis Stål, 1861 and Eomyrochea Linnavuori, 1982 and resulting nomenclatural changes (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae).

The Afrotropical genus-group taxa Dymantis Stål, 1861 and Eomyrochea Linnavuori, 1982 (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae: Pentatominae: Myrocheini) are confirmed as objective synonyms, both sharing the same type species: Dymantis subvittata Stål, 1861. As a result, Dymantis (= Eomyrochea, syn. confirm.) is downgraded to a subgenus of Myrochea Amyot and Serville, 1843 and a new genus, Neodymantis gen. nov., is established for Dymantis sensu Linnavuori (1982) (type species Halys plana Fabricius, 1803).
