Diazole and triazole inhibition of nitrification process in return activated sludge.

Azoles are emerging contaminants that are resistant to biodegradation during wastewater treatment. Their presence has been widely reported in wastewater effluents and receiving waters. In this work, the potential inhibition of nitrification process by six different azole compounds in wastewater treatment plants was investigated in batch bioassays. The azoles studied included three diazoles: pyrazole (Pz); 1-methylpyrazole (MePz); 3,5-dimethylpyrazole (DMePz); and three triazoles: 1,2,4-triazole (Tz); benzotriazole (BTz); and 5-methyl benzotriazole (MeBTz). The concentration of azoles causing 5

Unchanged nitrate and nitrite isotope fractionation during heterotrophic and Fe(II)-mixotrophic denitrification suggest a non-enzymatic link between denitrification and Fe(II) oxidation.

Natural-abundance measurements of nitrate and nitrite (NOx) isotope ratios (δ15N and δ18O) can be a valuable tool to study the biogeochemical fate of NOx species in the environment. A prerequisite for using NOx isotopes in this regard is an understanding of the mechanistic details of isotope fractionation (15ε, 18ε) associated with the biotic and abiotic NOx transformation processes involved (e.g., denitrification). However, possible impacts on isotope fractionation resulting from changing growth conditions during denitrification, different carbon substrates, or simply the presence of compound

The enhancement of iron fuel cell on bio-cathode denitrification and its mechanism as well as the microbial community analysis of bio-cathode.

To address the issue of insufficient electrons during denitrification, an iron fuel cell (IFC) bioreactor using iron as abiotic anode was designed. The nitrogen removal efficiency (NRE) of IFC (2.54 ± 0.016%) was significantly lower than microbial fuel cell (MFC) (32.58 ± 0.033%) with same bio-cathode under autotrophic conditions, which was due to the permeation of acetate on proton exchange membrane (PEM) affected the process of enriching autotrophic denitrifying bacteria by MFC. When used in heterotrophic conditions, the NRE of the closed-circuits of IFC was 29.04%, 10.53%, 8.33% higher than

Hypothermia Pseudomonas taiwanensis J488 exhibited strong tolerance capacity to high dosages of divalent metal ions during nitrogen removal process.

The nitrogen metabolic pathways of Pseudomonas taiwanensis J488 have not been confirmed from genomic function analysis and its divalent metal ion resistance remains poorly understood. In this study, the key denitrifying gene of Pseudomonas taiwanensis J488, nirB, was determined by draft genome sequencing. The nitrification of ammonium was insensitive to high concentrations of Ca(II), Mn(II), Zn(II), and Cd(II). Similarly, complete nitrite removal was achieved despite Mn(II) and Zn(II) reaching concentrations up to 30 mg/L. Furthermore, the efficiency of nitrate removal was significantly enhanc

Sulfur metabolites that facilitate oceanic phytoplankton-bacteria carbon flux.

Unlike biologically available nitrogen and phosphorus, which are often at limiting concentrations in surface seawater, sulfur in the form of sulfate is plentiful and not considered to constrain marine microbial activity. Nonetheless, in a model system in which a marine bacterium obtains all of its carbon from co-cultured phytoplankton, bacterial gene expression suggests that at least seven dissolved organic sulfur (DOS) metabolites support bacterial heterotrophy. These labile exometabolites of marine dinoflagellates and diatoms include taurine, N-acetyltaurine, isethionate, choline-O-sulfate,

Long-Term Survival of Synechococcus and Heterotrophic Bacteria without External Nutrient Supply after Changes in Their Relationship from Antagonism to Mutualism.

Marine phytoplankton and heterotrophic bacteria share a very close but usually changeable relationship. However, the ultimate fate of their unstable relationship on a long-term scale is unclear. Here, the relationship between Synechococcus and heterotrophic bacterial communities underwent a dramatic shift from antagonism to commensalism and eventually to mutualism during long-term cocultivation. The relationship change is attributed to the different (even opposite) effects of diverse bacterial members on Synechococcus and the ratio of beneficial to harmful bacteria. Different bacterial members

Cyanobacterial cohorts structure the diversity, abundance, and metabolism of heterotrophic bacteria in Lake Erie.

UNLABELLED: Eutrophication and warming in Lake Erie create two microbial threats: cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cHABs) that can produce toxins, and seasonal hypoxia driven by microbial respiration. These phenomena are often studied separately, with cHABs research focused on the Western basin and hypoxia on the Central basin. We conducted lakewide microbial sampling at three time points in 2024 (May, August, and September), integrating physicochemical data, cyanotoxin quantification, amplicon sequencing, and flow cytometry. We demonstrate that cyanobacteria form spatially and seasonally

Heterotrophic inorganic carbon fixation varies with temperature and resource availability in marine and soil bacterial isolates.

Inorganic carbon use in cellular metabolism is ubiquitous in all living organisms. The assimilation of inorganic carbon into biomass via heterotrophic inorganic carbon fixation (HICF) is estimated to contribute significantly to global carbon fixation, yet the controls on this process in strictly heterotrophic microorganisms remain poorly understood. To identify potential drivers of HICF, we cultivated well-characterized heterotrophic Gammaproteobacteria (Pseudomonas putida and Pseudoalteromonas carrageenovora) at two temperatures (optimal vs colder) and resource treatments (high vs low organic

Transition from sulfur autotrophic to mixotrophic denitrification: Performance with different carbon sources, microbial community and artificial neural network modeling.

To address the limitations inherent in both sulfur autotrophic denitrification (SAD) and heterotrophic denitrification (HD) processes, this study introduces a novel approach. Three carbon sources (glucose, methanol, and sodium acetate) were fed into the SAD system to facilitate the transition towards mixotrophic denitrification. Batch experiments were conducted to explore the effects of influencing factors (pH, HRT) on the denitrification performance of the mixotrophic system. Carbon source dosages were varied at 12.5%, 25%, and 50% of the theoretical amounts required for HD (18, 36, and 72 mg

Electricity-powered cryptic CO2 fixation pathway in heterotrophic Shewanella oneidensis for acetate synthesis.

Microbial electrosynthesis of CO2 is a sustainable carbon neutral technology. Although known for its diverse and efficient extracellular electron transfer (EET) characteristics, the bacteria of Shewanella genus have never been reported for use in electrosynthesis of multi-carbon chemicals. Herein, the electricity-powered conversion of CO2 to acetate was achieved under ammonium regulation for the first time in the model strain (Shewanella oneidensis MR-1), due to the activation of its intrinsic reductive glycine pathway. A high electron flux from cathode into MR-1 was achieved through the uniqu

Efficient nitrogen removal by heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification yeast Candida boidinii L21: Performance, pathway and application.

Efficient nitrogen removal yeasts are rarely encountered. Here, a heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification strain of Candida boidinii L21 was isolated. The optimal removal conditions for strain L21 were glucose as carbon source, C/N of 15, salinity of 10 ppt, pH of 7, shaking speed of 120 rpm, and temperature of 30 °C. Strain L21 removed NH4+-N, NO2--N, NO3--N (14---140 mg/L) and achieved nearly complete NO2--N, removal. Nitrogen balance and enzyme activity analysis indicated the nitrogen removal pathway of strain L21 through assimilation, nitrification, and denitrification pathways

Simultaneous inorganic nitrogen and phosphate removal by aerobic-heterotrophic fungus Fusarium keratoplasticum FSP1: Performance, pathway and application.

Fungi with multiple contaminant removal function have rarely been studied. Here, a novel fungal strain Fusarium keratoplasticum FSP1, which was isolated from halophilic granular sludge, is reported for first time to perform simultaneous nitrogen and phosphate removal. The strain showed wide adaptability under C/N ratios of 30-35, salinities of 0 %-3 % (m/v), and pH of 7.5-9.5. The maximum removal rates of ammonium, nitrate and nitrite were 4.43, 4.01 and 2.97 mg N/L/h. The nitrogen balance, enzyme activity and substrate conversion experiments demonstrated a single strain FSP1 can assimilate in

[Characterization and optimization of a heterotrophic bacterium for sulfide degradation].

The emission of hydrogen sulfide in the waste gas from slaughter plant, fishmeal feed processing and some other food industrial processing could cause serious air pollution to the surrounding environment. The purpose of this study was to screen heterotrophic bacterium strains for the removal of hydrogen sulfide odor. One heterotrophic bacterial mutant ZJNB-B3 was derived from the sulfide degrader Bacillus cereus XJ-2 and its sulfide removal efficiency was 97%. Based on the morphology studies, biochemical tests and 16S rRNA gene analysis, the strain was identified as Bacillus cereus ZJNB-B3. Th

Comparative assessment of environmental impacts of 1st generation (corn feedstock) and 3rd generation (carbon dioxide feedstock) PHA production pathways using life cycle assessment.

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are bio-based and biodegradable alternatives to conventional plastic types and have the potential to reduce the environmental impacts along the life cycle. In comparison to already established production routes for PHA (heterotrophic production) based on renewable feedstock like glucose (first generation feedstock), novel production routes, such as the photoautotrophic production of PHA based on CO2 as feedstock (third generation feedstock) could offer new perspectives with regard to the reduction in the environmental impacts. To quantify the environmental impacts o

Bacterial communities associated with a mineral weathering profile at a sulphidic mine tailings dump in arid Western Australia.

We investigated bacterial community assemblages and functions down a hill slope contaminated by tailings from a volcanogenic massive sulphide mine in arid Western Australia. Weathering of waste rock, high in S and Fe, had resulted in a varying elemental dispersal down a face of the tailings hill. Bacterial community assemblage, characterised by PCR-DGGE fingerprinting, was significantly associated with electrical conductivity (E.C.) (ρ = 0.664; P < 0.01). Analysis of mobile salts showed that E.C. values were driven by ionic S, Zn, Cl and Al. The bacterial community assemblage was directly char

Close spatial and metabolic association between heterotrophic and ammonia-oxidizing marine Nitrososphaerota.

Following the ubiquitous autotrophic ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA), heterotrophic representatives of the marine Nitrososphaerota (HMN) form the second most abundant group within this archaeal phylum. However, their eco-evolutionary strategies remain poorly understood. Previous studies have reported a consistent co-occurrence of HMN with marine AOA (MAOA), prompting a detailed investigation into their potential interaction. Through large-scale (meta)genomic and metatranscriptomic analyses, we reveal that HMN possess ultra-streamlined genomes and globally co-occur with marine AOA. The absence

Nitrogen removal characterization and functional enzymes identification of a hypothermia bacterium Pseudomonas fragi EH-H1.

A novel hypothermic strain, Pseudomonas fragi EH-H1, was found to effectively perform heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification at 15 °C. This strain could consume 100 %, 100 % and 99.95 % of ammonium (54.90 mg∙L-1), nitrate (56.12 mg∙L-1) and nitrite (54.15 mg∙L-1), accompanied by peak removal rates of 5.51, 3.63 and 3.14 mg/L/h, respectively. The ammonium was removed preferentially during simultaneous nitrification and denitrification. Notably, the elimination rate of the toxic nitrite nitrogen remained approximately 3.14 mg/L/h, whether supplemented with ammonium or not. Stepw
