Cat-scratch disease simulating malignant lymphoma.

A six-year-old girl with induration, swelling and discoloration of the lower eyelid, a temporal mass, preauricular adenopathy and enlarged parotid gland, underwent biopsy, She was initially diagnosed as having a malignant disorder of histiocytic origin. All lesions resolved without therapy. Further evaluation revealed that the child had oculoglandular cat-scratch disease. Cat-scratch disease should be added to the list of nonmalignant disorders which may simulate a malignant neoplasm in its clinical and histologic appearance. Recognition of this fact is important in order to avoid erroneous di

Cutaneous Involvement of Hematologic Malignancies.

In reviewing cutaneous manifestations of various hematologic malignancies, the authors focus on secondary cutaneous lymphomas and cutaneous manifestations of histiocyte disorders. Secondary cutaneous lymphomas are defined as skin lesions that develop secondary to infiltration by systemic lymphomas with predominantly extracutaneous involvement. In their review of histiocytic disorders with skin involvement, the authors focus on Langerhans cell histiocytosis and Rosai-Dorfman disease. Their review emphasizes the histology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, prognosis, and treatments availab

Malignant histiocytosis in a patient with sickle cell anemia: CT findings.

Malignant histiocytosis is a rare systemic disorder, characterized by progressive, invasive proliferation of atypical histiocytes. It is synonymous with the disease entity "histiocytic medullary reticulosis" initially described by Scott and Robb-Smith (Lancet 1939;194-8). To date, there have been slightly more than 100 cases reported in the literature. Although the radiographic features of malignant histiocytosis have been reported, to our knowledge there has not been any computed tomography (CT) description of the findings of this disease entity. The purpose of this report is to describe the

Pediatric lymphomas and histiocytic disorders of childhood.

Although there have been dramatic improvements in the treatment of children with non-hodgkin lymphoma, hodgkin lymphoma and histiocytic disorders over the past 3 decades, many still relapse or are refractory to primary therapy. In addition, late effects such as 2nd malignancies, cardiomyopathy and infertility remain a major concern. Thus, this review focuses on the current state of the science and, in particular, novel treatment strategies that are aimed at improving outcomes for all pediatric patients with lymphoma and histiocytic disorders while reducing treatment related morbidity.

Histiocytic Sarcoma.

Histiocytic sarcoma, a rare malignant neoplasm showing morphologic and immunophenotypic features of histiocytes, is characterized typically by extranodal presentation and a dismal clinical course, particularly in patients with disseminated disease. A history of hematolymphoid disorder can be identified in a subset of patients, suggesting transdifferentiation of a preexisting hematolymphoid neoplasm in its pathogenesis. The differential diagnosis of histiocytic sarcoma includes various lymphomas, other histiocytic and dendritic cell neoplasms, carcinomas, melanomas, and pleomorphic sarcomas. Gi

Clinical presentation of non-malignant diseases mimicking leukemia cutis: A report of two cases.

The infiltration of leukemia cells into the skin, known as leukemia cutis, is a rare presentation of this disease and accounts for a diagnostic challenge. The main differential diagnoses include infections, other neoplastic diseases with skin involvement and histiocytic disorders, among others, as they entail different prognostic and therapeutic approaches. Here we describe two patients who were initially diagnosed with leukemia cutis, whose final diagnosis was of non-malignant diseases.

Surgical pathology of the spleen: an approach to the differential diagnosis of splenic lymphomas and leukemias. Part II. Diseases of the red pulp.

The diseases which chiefly pertain to the differential diagnosis of splenic lymphomas and leukemias primarily involving the red pulp have been separated into five histologic categories. These include the various forms of congestion, infections, benign and malignant histiocytic proliferations, leukemias and myeloproliferative disorders, and the rare nonhematopoietic tumors of the spleen. Many diseases with major involvement of the red pulp present as hypersplenism of unknown etiology. Accurate diagnosis is particularly dependent on an awareness of the specific histologic manifestations of malig

The phosphatidylserine receptors, T cell immunoglobulin mucin proteins 3 and 4, are markers of histiocytic sarcoma and other histiocytic and dendritic cell neoplasms.

The T cell immunoglobulin mucin (TIM) proteins are a family of cell surface phosphatidyserine receptors that are important for the recognition and phagocytosis of apoptotic cells. Because TIM-4 is expressed by macrophages and dendritic cells in human tissue, we examined its expression in a range of histiocytic and dendritic cell neoplasms and found moderate to strong immunohistochemical staining in cases of juvenile xanthogranuloma and histiocytic sarcoma, and lower level staining in interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma, Langerhans cell histiocytosis, acute monocytic leukemia (leukemia cutis

The unique association of malignant histiocytosis and a primary gonadal germ cell tumor.

Previous reports of the association between hematologic malignancies and germ cell tumors have been limited to patients with nonseminomatous tumors, exclusively of mediastinal origin. Among the various hematologic disorders, a large proportion have involved histiocytic tumors, either acute monocytic leukemia or malignant histiocytosis. We now report the first case of simultaneously occurring malignant histiocytosis and testicular embryonal carcinoma. The patient, an 18-year-old male, presented with hepatosplenomegaly due to malignant histiocytosis and was found on further evaluation to have a

Malignant histiocytosis in the leukaemic stage: a new entity (M5c-AML) in the FAB classification?

Malignant histiocytosis (MH) is a rare, rapidly fatal disorder, characterized by systemic proliferation of abnormal histiocytes. Most patients present with pancytopenia. We report the case of a patient with MH in the leukaemic stage, who presented extremely pronounced general symptoms and multisystemic involvement. Determination of serum cytokines showed high levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF), interleukin 6 (IL-6) and interleukin 1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra). Cytogenetic studies proved the monoclonality of the histiocytic proliferation. These findings strongly suggest that we are dealing

Carcinoma Erysipeloides From Metastatic Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma Initially Mistaken for Intralymphatic Histiocytosis.

Intralymphatic histiocytosis is a rare dermatologic disorder, commonly associated with inflammatory disorders and rarely malignancy. Carcinoma erysipeloides (CE) is a rare pseudoinflammatory cutaneous eruption that resembles soft -tissue infections as result of intralymphatic metastasis and subsequent lymphatic obstruction. Breast carcinoma represents most of the CE cases, but rarely other malignancies are involved. This report discusses a patient with a history of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the temple, who was initially diagnosed with intralymphatic histiocytosis located on hi

[Histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis (Kikuchi's disease)].

We report a typical case of histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis (Kikuchi's disease). To our knowledge this is the first reported case in Denmark. Histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis is a benign self-limiting disorder, which mainly involves the cervical lymph nodes. The disease commonly affects young women of Asian origin, but it is seen more and more often in other populations. Clinically and histologically it can be misdiagnosed as malignant lymphoma. The etiology is unknown.

Clinical presentations of the most common histiocytic disorders.

BACKGROUND: Histiocytic diseases are significantly rarer than diseases derived from lymphocytic, plasmacytic, or myeloid lineages, and thus are encountered infrequently in hematology and oncology clinics. The most common form is Langerhans cell histiocytosis, which in adults has an incidence of 1-2 cases per 1 million; the others are considerably rarer, with their occurrence reported only by the number of described cases rather than through incidence or prevalence. Their rarity leads to delays in establishing an accurate diagnosis. OBJECTIVE: The group of histiocytic diseases includes seven c

Fulminant multisystem non-langerhans cell histiocytic proliferation with hemophagocytosis: a variant form of Erdheim-Chester disease.

Hemophagocytosis (HP), a feature seen in malignant histiocytosis and infection- and lymphoma-associated disorders, has not been previously emphasized in Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD). Generally, ECD is recognized as a rare, systemic, non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis with a variable clinical course. Herein, we describe a unique case of multisystem non-Langerhans cell histiocytic proliferation with a fulminant clinical course (death occurred within 3 months of presentation) that showed prominent HP and extensive involvement of multiple organs, including the lungs, resulting in respiratory failu

Enhanced Computed Tomography and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography in the Uncommon Histiocytic Sarcoma of Small Intestine Arising after Gastric Large B-Cell Lymphoma.

Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is an extremely rare and aggressive malignant neoplasm of hematopoietic origin that shows morphologic and immunophenotypic evidence of histiocytic differentiation. In approximately 25% of the cases, presumed transdifferentiation of a preexisting hematolymphoid disorder can be demonstrated. Various extranodal sites, particularly the gastrointestinal tract, soft tissue, skin, and spleen, can be involved. Enhanced CT and FDG PET/CT findings of extranodal histiocytic sarcoma have been barely reported. We present a case with extranodal HS originating in the small intestine

Benign lymphadenopathies in children and adolescents.

This article provides and overview of the benign causes of lymphadenopathy (LA) in the pediatric population. Because of the topics' broad nature, this review is a selective one and primarily focuses on benign conditions of lymph nodes that may be confused with malignant disorders or have been described or better defined in recent years. Specifically, these will include infectious LA caused by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and cat scratch disease (CSD), LA associated with vaccination, drug-associated LA, progressive transformation of germinal centers (PTGC), LA a

Reactive hemophagocytic syndrome.

Two cases of reactive hemophagocytic syndrome (RHS) are reported, and the clinical and pathological features are compared with other histiocytic proliferative disorders, including familial hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (FHL) and malignant histiocytosis. RHS can be associated with a variety of infections, including viral, bacterial, fungal, and parasitic. RHS may also be familial as exemplified by our 2 cases in siblings. The isolation of an effective agent appears to be the only criterion by which a diagnosis of RHS can be made.

mRNA sequencing analysis and growth inhibitory effects of palbociclib on cell lines from canine histiocytic proliferative disorders.

Canine histiocytic proliferative disorders include aggressive and fatal diseases, such as histiocytic sarcoma (HS) and histiocytosis (SyH). The molecular mechanisms underlying cell proliferation need to be elucidated for the development of effective treatments. In the present study, mRNA expression levels were comprehensively analysed in cell lines derived from localized HS, disseminated HS, SyH and Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) in dogs. Based on the results obtained, the growth inhibitory effects of palbociclib, a CDK4/6 inhibitor, were verified with the cell lines in vitro and in xenog

Infection or Glioma? The False Dilemma of Primary Central Nervous System Histiocytic Sarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Primary central nervous system (CNS) histiocytic sarcoma is an extremely rare lymphoproliferative disorder that affects the CNS and behaves aggressively. Only 27 cases of primary CNS histiocytic sarcoma have been reported. The paucity of literature on this entity has made diagnosis and treatment difficult both for the surgeon and the pathologist. CASE DESCRIPTION: In this case of primary CNS histiocytic sarcoma, a middle-aged woman presented from an outside institution with a supposed cerebellar abscess. Intraoperative frozen pathology was initially interpreted as high-grade gliom
