Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy. Occurrence in identical twins with retroperitoneal disease.

Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (SHML) was originally defined as a relatively specific benign pseudolymphomatous disorder. Although the etiology remains unknown, the spectrum of SHML has been expanded to include predominance of extranodal disease in some patients, clinically significant immunologic abnormalities in 10% of patients, and fatal outcome in 7% of patients. We report the rare occurrence of SHML in identical twins; to our knowledge, SHML in identical twins has been reported only once previously. The two patients described are also unusual because of the predominance

Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (Rosai-Dorfman disease) treated with 2-chlorodeoxyadenosine.

Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (SHML) or Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is a rare but well-defined histiocytic proliferative disorder of unknown etiology that usually presents with cervical lymphadenopathy, fever, leukocytosis, and hypergammaglobulinemia in an otherwise healthy child. Although many patients undergo spontaneous remission, a subset of patients with systemic disease has a more serious course. For those patients with a poor outcome, steroids and chemotherapeutic agents such as etoposide or 6-mercaptopurine plus low dose methotrexate have been used. We present a chil

Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (Rosai-Dorfman disease): diagnosis by fine-needle aspiration.

Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (SHML) is a rare idiopathic proliferative disorder of histiocytes with characteristic morphologic features. We describe a case of SHML occurring in a 14-yr-old black male, in whom the diagnosis was made by fine-needle aspiration of a cervical lymph node. Cytologic features included increased numbers of large histiocytes associated with a polymorphous, cellular background composed of benign lymphocytes, plasma cells, and polymorphonuclear leukocytes. Lymphophagocytosis was a prominent feature. Extranodal involvement of the larynx was documented b

Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (Rosai Dorfman disease) in an HIV-positive patient.

We report a case of a 31-year-old HIV infected black female, who presented with asymptomatic generalized lymphadenopathy. Three particularly enlarged lymph nodes were biopsied (2 cervical and 1 axillary). The histological picture was consistent with a diagnosis of sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (SHML) or Rosai-Dorfman disease. Large histiocytes, positive for a variety of macrophage markers and for the S-100 protein, were observed in the distended sinuses. A few hyperplastic follicles, such as usually seen in HIV-infection-associated lymphadenopathy, were present at the periph

Concomitant occurrence of sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy and nodal marginal zone lymphoma.

Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (SHML), also known as Rosai-Dorfman disease, is a rare self-limiting disorder of histiocytes with unknown etiology. Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy is most common in children and young adults and is characterized by painless lymphadenopathy. Histologically there is a proliferation of sinus histiocytes with lymphophagocytosis or emperipolesis. On rare occasions, SHML has been associated with lymphoma, usually involving different anatomic sites and developing at different times. We report a case of concomitant SHML and nodal margi

[Extranodal Rosai Dorfman disease (sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy). Report of 5 cases].

Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (SHML) was described in 1969 by Rosai and Dorfman as an benign disorder of the lymph nodes. Involvement of extranodal sites by SHML may occur as part of a generalized disease involving lymph nodes as well as independently of the lymph node status. The clinical course is mostly benign and indolent, but in rare cases the SHML can cause death. We report 5 cases of extranodal Rosai Dorfman disease (ENSHML). The lesions were localized in the soft tissue of the extremities, the head and the skeleton. Histopathological examination revealed a lymphoplas

Extranodal sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy: isolated central nervous system involvement mimicking meningioma.

We present the fifth reported case of extranodal sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (SHML) isolated in the central nervous system. This case emphasizes the importance of recognizing the clinical and radiographic presentation of SHML and shows that immunohistochemical evaluation is required for definitive diagnosis.

Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (Rosai-Dorfman disease): response to methotrexate and mercaptopurine.

We report a 3-year-old girl presenting with bilateral cervical lymph node enlargement persisting for > 3 months. Leukocytosis, elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, a marked hypergammaglobulinemia, and a moderate hepatosplenomegaly were also found. The diagnosis of sinushistiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (SHML), also known as Rosai-Dorfman disease, was established histologically by the demonstration of characteristic sinushistiocytosis with lymphocytophagocytosis. Treatment was started with high dose steroids, and a decline of lymph node size and a normalization of laboratory parame

A new case of cervical intramedullary sinus histiocytosis causing paraplegia and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is an uncommon, benign histiocytic proliferative disorder of unknown origin. It predominantly affects the lymph nodes, but can also be found extranodal in different organs. Nervous system involvement is rare, and the most cases are intracranial. Surgical treatment is indicated when the central nervous system (CNS) in compromised. CASE DESCRIPTION: We herein describe the management of a 27-year-old woman who presented progressive spinal cord symptoms, secondary to an isolated intramedullary lesion, which had a histological confirmation of RDD. Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy: a case report with pleural effusion and cervical lymphadenopathy.

Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (SHML) is a rare disorder characterized by a nonneoplastic proliferation of distinctive histiocyte cells within lymph node sinuses and lymphatics in extranodal sites. SHML occurs worldwide and is primarily a disease of childhood and early adulthood. A 26-yr-old man presented with painless palpable lymph node in cervical area. Radiographic studies revealed pleural effusion with lymphadenopathy and calcification in mediastinum. The cervical lymph node biopsy showed dilated sinuses filled with histiocytes with clear cytoplasm. The cells stained pos

Histologic features of sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy in patients with autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome.

Autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome (ALPS) is an inherited disorder associated with defects in Fas-mediated apoptosis, characterized most often by childhood onset of lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly, hypergammaglobulinemia, and autoimmune phenomena. Children with sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (SHML) have a somewhat similar clinical phenotype in which prominent adenopathy also is associated with hypergammaglobulinemia, and autoimmune phenomena are reported in 10-15% of cases. We observed histopathological features of SHML in the lymph nodes of some of our ALPS patients, furt

[Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy or the Destombes-Rosai-Dorfman disease in the Ivory Coast].

Sinusal histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy is a rare pathological entity since, as of 1983, only 200 cases have been published. Following the seminal description in 1965 by Destombes in Blacks, histological features of this disease were specified by Rosai and Dorfman in 1969 and 1972. We report three cases in young Ivorian subjects. The presenting finding is always chronically enlarged lymph nodes, but extranodal lesions are possible, most commonly involving the eye, salivary glands, upper respiratory tract, skin, bone, testis, and nervous system. Diagnosis can be ascertained only upon

Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy in a Japanese male with symptoms of dyspnea and visual disturbance.

A case study of sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy is reported. A Japanese male developed lymphadenopathy in the nasal cavity 10 years ago. Biopsy specimens demonstrated massive histiocytosis with phagocytosis of lymphocytes, plasmacytes, and erythrocytes. During the course of his illness, the patient experienced an episode of massive nasal bleeding, and a tracheotomy was performed because of dyspnea. He had also an operation by Killian's approach to relieve a visual disturbance. The patient has been treated with cyclophosphamide and prednisolone for 6 months.

Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (Rosai-Dorfman disease): clinico-pathological study of three cases.

INTRODUCTION: We report three cases of sinus histiocytosis, a rare disease of unknown aetiology with massive lymphadenopathy (SHML), also known as Rosai-Dorfman (RD) disease, in a paediatric population. This proliferative histiocytic disorder is defined by histological and immunohistochemical (IHC) characteristics and can manifest as nodal involvement with variable enlargement of the lymph nodes (two cases) and extranodal manifestations involving skin and larynx involvement (one case). One patient had hypergammaglobulinemia. The morphological investigation revealed that all lymph nodes showed
