Histocompatibility antigens in progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS; scleroderma).

Patients with progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS; scleroderma) were typed for the HLA-A, -B, and -DR antigens. No significant differences in the frequencies of any HLA-A or -B antigen were found. In the subgroup of patients with PSS and diffuse scleroderma (PSS-DS), the frequency of Bw35 was increased (0.30 vs 0.17 in controls; p less than 0.005, corrected P greater than 0.2). Although patients with PSS-DS also had an increased frequency of DR1 antigen (0.27 vs 0.12 in local controls; P less than 0.005, corrected P less than 0.05), no association between Bw35 and DR1 antigens could be detecte

Histocompatibility antigens (HLA): associations with immunopathic diseases and with responses to microbial antigens.

Described is the experience from a single histocompatibility typing laboratory sampling, firstly, Australian patients with various immunopathic diseases and, secondly, subjects previously classified as "responders" or "non-responders" to various microbial antigens. The diseases considered included chronic active hepatitis (CAH) and various cirrhoses, "thyrogastric" autoimmune diseases, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis, dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) with intestinal villous atrophy, and multiple sclerosis (MS). The immune responses considered included those to flagellin,

Matching of histocompatibility (HL-A) antigens for platelet transfusion.

The average in vivo platelet survival was measured by both per cent recoveries (%R) and half-lives (t 1/2) of 51Cr-labeled platelets in 69 transfusions given to 43 thrombacytopenic patients. The results demonstrated that (1) increase in the number of HL-A incompatibilities in the platelet donor was significantly associated with decreased %R and t 1/2 of the infused platelets; (2) survival of transfused platelets from HL-A-matched single donors was consistently superior to those pooled from several grossly mismatched donors; and (3) survival of platelets infused when patients had circulating ly

HL-A histocompatibility antigens and their relation to disease.

Table 14 summarizes the data presented in this review. The table lists the various diseases, along with whatever HL-A-antigen associations may be present, and the ranking that is based on the accumulated confidence of the associations; also, it lists the individual antigens and those disease states in which the incidence of the various antigens is increased ro decreased. The Table should expand rapidly in future years. There are a number of problems involved in this area of research: (1) There is a scarcity and lack of stability of good reagents, as well as the general difficulty of HL-A serol

[Study of the association of histocompatibility antigens with rheumatism].

Study of histocompatibility antigens of the HIA system in 86 patients with rheumatic fever has demonstrated the high rate of the antigens AII, B27, Cw2, 3, Dr5, 7 as compared with control (600 healthy persons). It is therefore necessary to point to the involvement of the HIA system in the formation of proneness to rheumatic fever and its clinical varieties. Special attention should be drawn to the locus HIA C. Histocompatibility antigens associated with rheumatic fever can be viewed as risk factors which should necessarily be taken into account during the conduction of the primary prophylaxis,

Histocompatibility (HLA) antigens and eye diseases other than uveitis.

In recent years, numerous studies on the possible associations of histocompatibility (HLA) antigens with various eye diseases other than uveitis have been carried out. This paper presents, discusses and evaluates the results of these studies. Undoubtedly, apart from acute anterior uveitis, HLA-typing has very limited usefulness in the practice of clinical ophthalmology. Many reported HLA associations with other eye diseases have not been confirmed by subsequent studies. However, a sizable residuum of highly significant and reproducible associations between HLA antigens and several eye diseases

Histocompatibility antigens in polymyalgia rheumatica and giant cell arteritis.

Fifty-five Caucasoid patients with polymyalgia rheumatica or giant cell arteritis were typed for HLA, A, B, C and DR locus antigens. In the total patient group, DR4 had a significantly increased frequency. The prevalence of CW3 and CW6 was also significantly increased, the rise of CW3 possibly being attributable to its well-documented linkage disequilibrium with DR4. The rise in CW6 cannot be attributed to its known linkage disequilibrium with DR7.

Duffy and Kidd blood group antigens: minor histocompatibility antigens involved in renal allograft rejection?

BACKGROUND: Minor histocompatibility antigens have been poorly defined. Whether Duffy (FY) and Kidd (JK), polymorphic and immunogenic blood group antigens, widely distributed in human organs, expressed and functional in the kidney, could function as minor histocompatibility antigens and be implicated in renal allograft rejection was questioned. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A retrospective, homogeneous, single-center cohort of 370 renal transplants was analyzed. In all donor/recipient pairs, FY and JK polymorphisms were identified by real-time polymerase chain reaction. In all donor/recipient pai

Minor histocompatibility antigen TCR-T.

Minor histocompatibility antigens (MiHA) are polymorphic peptides presented by HLA molecules on recipient cells in allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) and are derived from proteins with genetic variants that differ between recipient and donor. After allo-HCT, hematopoietic-restricted MiHA enable selective targeting of residual recipient-derived hematopoiesis, including malignant cells. Advances in engineering T cells with high-affinity, MiHA-specific T-cell receptors (TCR; TCR-T) are enabling clinical translation of MiHA T-cell immunotherapy. Early-phase trials of HA-1- an

Histocompatibility antigen combinations in rheumatoid arthritis.

The frequencies of HLA-A, -B, -C, DR and MT lymphocyte alloantigens in clinical and serologic subsets of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) were determined in 65 Caucasian patients with definite or classical disease and compared to frequencies observed in normal individuals. The elevation in frequency of several antigens controlled by different genes in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) suggested that combinations of antigens may be associated with RA. Significant associations were found for HLA-A1-DR4 and A1-MT2 (p less than 0.001), Bw40-DR4 (p less than 0.002) and Cw3-DR4 (p less than 0.001)

Histocompatibility antigens and antibodies to viral and other antigens in Alzheimer pre-senile dementia.

Alzheimer's disease may arise from an interaction between a conventional infective agent and a particular disease susceptibility (related to the HLA-A or B locus). HLA antigens and antibodies to conventional infective agents were examined in 14 patients with pre-senile dementia. Most of the sample probably suffered Alzheimer's disease, though one subject may have had Pick's disease. No particular HLA type or antibody was associated with the sample.

The histocompatibility antigen in asbestos related disease.

Thirty nine phenotypes of human leucocyte antigens (HLA)-A-B-DR and DQ were obtained from 99 asbestos workers (one woman and 98 men). Presence or absence of antinuclear antibodies and rheumatoid factor was determined in 91 of them. Workers were divided into five groups: asbestos workers with no apparent disease (AW; n = 17), diffuse benign pleural disease (PD; n = 31), asbestosis (AS; n = 24), asbestosis with lung cancer (AS-CA; n = 14), and mesothelioma (M; n = 13). Compared with AW, several trends of differences of HLA antigen prevalence were found in patients with asbestos related disease,

Histocompatibility antigen patterns in Dupuytren's contracture.

Thirty-seven consecutive patients with Dupuytren's Contracture were investigated by tissue typing techniques to ascertain their HLA--A, B, C and DR antigen status. Whilst no definite HLA antigen was found in association with this disease, at least one possibly significant pattern of HLA DR antigens was found in these patients. This finding was also noted in patients with scleroderma, and the scleroderma-like syndrome induced by vinyl chloride exposure.

Computational modeling and confirmation of leukemia-associated minor histocompatibility antigens.

T-cell responses to minor histocompatibility antigens (mHAs) mediate both antitumor immunity (graft-versus-leukemia [GVL]) and graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) in allogeneic stem cell transplant. Identifying mHAs with high allele frequency, tight binding affinity to common HLA molecules, and narrow tissue restriction could enhance immunotherapy against leukemia. Genotyping and HLA allele data from 101 HLA-matched donor-recipient pairs (DRPs) were computationally analyzed to predict both class I and class II mHAs likely to induce either GVL or GVHD. Roughly twice as many mHAs were predicted in

Risk assessment in haematopoietic stem cell transplantation: minor histocompatibility antigens.

Minor histocompatibility (H) antigens are key molecules in graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) and the graft-versus-tumour effect after allogeneic stem-cell transplantation (SCT). Today, molecular typing methods allow an easy assessment of differences in minor H antigens between patient and donors, so that the GvHD risk in individual patients can be estimated. However, the large number of minor H antigens prevents matching for them to avoid GvHD. Interestingly, mismatching for minor H antigens might improve the outcome of allogeneic SCT. Some minor H antigens are expressed mainly by malignant cel

Intrathyroidal mast cells express major histocompatibility complex class-II antigens.

We studied the expression of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class-II antigen in mast cells of rat thyroid glands. In the normal rat thyroid, mast cells express MHC class-II antigen. In BioBreeding Wistar (BB/W) rats, the strain of animals prone to develop spontaneous autoimmune thyroiditis, the number of MHC class-II-positive mast cells was significantly higher than in normal rats (p less than 0.01). Furthermore, intrathyroidal mast cells in BB/W rats showed an increased MHC class-II expression before the appearance of circulating thyroid antibodies or the infiltration of tissue with m
