Notes on the history of caffeine use.

As behooves something so deeply entrenched in culture, the historical origins of the use of methylxanthines are unknown and dressed in myth. This is true for coffee as well as tea, and for both it is interesting to note that their common use is really very recent. For coffee we know that its use became more widespread in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and in Europe this occurred in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The use of tea became more common during the Ming Dynasty in China and during the eighteenth century in Britain. Coffee was mostly an upper-class drink in Arabia, and

[Botulinum toxin: from poison to drug. A historical review].

Botulinumtoxin (BTX) is a neurotoxin produced from Clostridium botulinum under anaerobic conditions and is responsible for botulism, a notifiable, bacterial form of food poisoning. The first case of botulism is believed to have occurred in 1735. An epidemic in Southern Germany in 1793 claimed the death of over the half of those patients who had become ill through eating uncooked blood sausages. The term "pharmakon" is Greek and implicates that a drug originates from poison (potion, remedy). Theophrastus Bombast von Hohenheim known as Paracelsus (1493/94-1541) first described this duality with

The meninges.

The dura was first described in ancient Egypt. Hippocrates insisted that it should be protected and not penetrated. Celsus proposed an association between clinical findings and meningeal damage. Galen proposed that the dura was attached only at the sutures, and he was the first to describe the pia in humans. In the Middle Ages, new interest in the management of meningeal injuries arose, with renewed interest in relating clinical changes to intracranial injuries. These associations were neither consistent nor accurate. The Renaissance brought little change. It was in the 18th century that it be

[Antony's fire (gangrenous ergotism) and medieval iconography].

Ergotism was known as Holy Fire or St Antony's Fire in the Middle Ages, because of the burning sensations and limb gangrene it entailed. It was a frequent disorder, caused by eating rye flour contaminated by the fungus Claviceps purpurea. The Hospitable Order of St Antony was founded near Vienne in France, and counted 400 establishments in Europe by 1777. Ergotism is the subject of an abundant iconography, including statues and paintings. Woodcuts show the temptations of St Antony, with strange and diabolic scenes, and individuals with gangrenous limbs. Germanic woodcuts of the XVth century sh

[Eye-drops from olden times to the XIXth century].

The Spanish word "colirio" comes from the Latin collyrium, which in turn came from the Greek kollirion. Initially, the Romans use this word in a general way, but due to their use mainly in ophthalmology, the use of the term became restricted to those topical medications destined for the care and prevention of ocular diseases, from solutions and suspensions to poultices, salves and ointments. During the Middle Ages "colirio" included not only substances used to dilate ladies' pupils for aesthetic reasons but also medications for ocular hygiene and treatment. The Industrial Revolution of the XIX

Beauty and the body: the origins of cosmetics.

Ancient cultures were as preoccupied with the aesthetics of appearance as individuals are today. Dermabrasion for skin resurfacing has been performed with salt, pumice, ground grains, bone, and horn. Chemical peels have been performed with acids, metals, botanical extracts, or animal fats. Tattoos, ear piercing, makeup, skin treatments, and massages have existed for the past 5000 years. According to history, when the rise of more complex societies brought an ever-increasing demand for cosmesis, perfumers, cosmetologists, barbers, and gentlewomen became pioneers, undertaking and developing the

A stone never cut for: a new interpretation of The Cure of Folly by Jheronimus Bosch.

From the late 15th century onwards, cutting for stones in patients' heads to cure mental illness was depicted in European art. The earliest and most famous painting of this kind is The Cure of Folly, painted by Jheronimus Bosch around the turn of the 15th to the 16th century. In general, these depictions are thought to relate to surgical as well as mental health practices of that time. However, it can be questioned whether barber surgeons or quacks cut for stones in patients' heads, and if they did not, what the meaning of Bosch's and other artists' paintings might be. Paintings from the 15th

Continuity or change in the transition to Islam? A diachronic assessment of agricultural production at Old Dongola, Northern Sudan (14th-18th centuries CE).

In this paper, we present an archaeobotanical study from Old Dongola, northern Sudan, examining agricultural dynamics and subsistence strategies from the Late Christian to the Islamic period. Old Dongola, established in the 5th century, served as the capital of the Kingdom of Makuria, one of the three medieval Nubian kingdoms. Following the collapse of Makuria in the 14th century, the city underwent significant cultural and social transformations, marked by the migration of Arab tribes and the rise of new power structures. From the 14th to the 18th century, Old Dongola served as the seat of a

Evolving concepts of heart failure: cooling furnace, malfunctioning pump, enlarging muscle--Part I.

Understanding of the causes of dyspnea and anasarca, the cardinal features of heart failure, has changed dramatically since Greco-Roman times, when sputum and pleural effusions were thought to originate in the brain, and the heart was believed to heat and distribute the vital spirit. It was not until the seventeenth century, when Harvey demonstrated that the heart was a pump and autopsy descriptions revealed valve abnormalities that interfered with the circulation, that it became possible to identify the role of heart disease in causing shortness of breath and edema. Morgagni's recognition, to

Quarantine, isolation, and cohorting: from cholera to Klebsiella.

BACKGROUND: Isolation is defined as the separation of persons with communicable diseases from those who are healthy. This public health practice, along with quarantine, is used to limit the transmission of infectious diseases and provides the foundation of current-day cohorting. METHODS: Review of the pertinent English-language literature. RESULTS: Mass isolation developed during the medieval Black Death outbreaks in order to protect ports from the transmission of epidemics. In the mid-1800s, infectious disease hospitals were opened. It now is clear that isolation and cohorting of patients a

The occurrence of rabies in pre-Columbian Central America: an historical search.

Rabies is considered one of the oldest infectious diseases known to humans. However, the first written reports on rabies cases in the Americas did not appear until the first decade of the 18th century from Mexico. In an attempt to clarify if the disease was already present in pre-Columbian times, we searched for evidence in the Maya and Aztec cultures. Other sources of information were early manuscripts written by the conquistadors and early explorers. We did not identify any unequivocal direct evidence that the disease rabies was known in pre-Columbian Central America but sufficient circumsta
