Testing-Specific Skating Performance in Ice Hockey.

Hajek, F, Keller, M, Taube, W, von Duvillard, SP, Bell, JW, and Wagner, H. Testing-specific skating performance in ice hockey. J Strength Cond Res 35(12S): S70-S75, 2020-Skating performance generally determines overall performance in ice hockey but has not been measured adequately in the past. Consequently, the aim of the study was to develop and validate a specific overall skating performance test for ice hockey (SOSPT) that includes similar movements and intensities as in competition. Ten male elite under-14-year and under-18-year old ice hockey players performed the SOSPT (2 heats only) and

Injuries in women's ice hockey: special considerations.

Ice hockey is a popular collision sport with a growing number of female athletes participating each year. As participation among girls and women continues to increase, it will be important to recognize common injuries occurring during women's games. Despite difference in the rules that prohibit body checking in women's and girls' games, injury profiles are similar to those of their male counterparts. Concussions, contusions, acromioclavicular joint injuries, ligamentous knee injuries, and muscle strains occur during women's ice hockey games, with groin strains accounting for the most common pr

Boot-top tendon lacerations in ice hockey.

Injury to the anterior tibial tendon, extensor hallucis longus, extensor communis tendons, or dorsalis pedis artery, vein, and nerve are known as "boot-top" injuries. A series of five such cases illustrates that the size of laceration is often small and injury to the underlying structures can be missed. This injury should be preventable if equipment is worn properly.

Shoulder dislocation in Swedish ice hockey players.

1. Humeroscapular dislocation, primary or recurrent, is found in 8% of elite ice hockey players in Sweden. 2. The dislocation recurs in 90% of greater than 20-year-old players and the frequency diminishes with increasing age. 3. The duration of immobilization after the first dislocation bears no sure relation to the risk of recurrence. 4. In 80% of the cases, the operated shoulder was the one that predominates in ice hockey, usually the left. Of the 32 operated players, 30 have been able to continue with ice hockey and relatively marked postoperative loss of mobility has been tolerated well. 5

Which Sport Is More Dangerous: Ice Hockey or Field Hockey? A Review of the Head and Neck Injuries Associated With the Two Sports.

PURPOSE: Ice hockey and field hockey are contact sports with the potential for injury, especially to the head and neck regions. The purpose of this study is to estimate and compare hospital admission (injury severity) between ice hockey and field hockey of those who presented to the emergency department with head and neck injuries. METHODS: The investigators designed and implemented a 20-year retrospective cohort study using the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System database. We included data related to ice hockey and field hockey injuries from January 2000 to December 2019 in this s

Stress fracture of the first rib in a hockey goalie.

First rib stress fractures are uncommon in athletes and diagnosis requires a high degree of clinical suspicion. Diagnostic delay may increase risk of poor healing and long-term complications. Case reports and series describe these injuries primarily in overhead athletes; proposed contributing factors include anatomic susceptibility to stress and repetitive opposing muscular forces. We describe an ice hockey goalie with acute-on-chronic thoracic back pain who was found to have a first rib stress fracture, which to our knowledge is the first reported in this sport. We hypothesize that biomechani

Fighting in professional ice hockey: it's time for a change.

Ice hockey has long been defined by a level of violence not seen in other sports. The rough-and-tough vigilante nature of the game was often employed as a method of enticing fans. Play in the National Hockey League (NHL) evolved throughout the 20th century as the rules governing it did. The nuances of what was allowed on the ice was slowly defined, but the league always fell short of an outright ban on fighting. Notably, the NHL allows fighting while international and Olympic leagues do not. Proponents of fighting's continued presence in the NHL argue that it can attract fans, facilitate momen

Transient Hemiplegia in a Collegiate Ice Hockey Player.

An otherwise healthy 21-yr-old female hockey player sustained a cervical whiplash injury during competition after being checked and falling backward onto the ice. Initial assessment revealed right-sided hemiparesis and sensory abnormalities. Magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography of the brain and spine were unremarkable. Most of her right upper limb symptoms resolved in 24 hrs, with complete resolution in 5 days. Over 6 wks, she regained right lower limb strength with mild residual sensory deficits. Repeat magnetic resonance imaging of the cervical spine was unremarkable. At 18 wks

The Hip in Ice Hockey: A Current Concepts Review.

Ice hockey is a fast, physical sport with unique associated biomechanical demands often placing the hip in forced and repetitive supraphysiological ranges of motion. Ice hockey players commonly endure and are sidelined by nebulous groin injury or hip pain. Underlying causes can be chronic or acute and extra-articular, intra-articular, or "hip-mimicking." This article serves to review common hip-related injuries in ice hockey. For each, we define the particular condition; comment on risk factors and preventive strategies; discuss key historical, physical examination, and imaging findings; and f

Relationships to skating performance in competitive hockey players.

The purpose of this study was to identify off-ice variables that would correlate to on-ice skating sprint performance and cornering ability. Previous literature has not reported any off-ice testing variables that strongly correlate to on-ice cornering ability in ice hockey players. Thirty-six male hockey players aged 15-22 years (mean +/- SD: 16.3 +/- 1.7 years; weight = 70.8 +/- 10.4 kg; height = 175.6 +/- 4.1 cm) with an average of 10.3 +/- 3.0 years hockey playing experience (most at AA and AAA levels) participated in the study. The on-ice tests included a 35-m sprint and the cornering S te

Comparison of impact data in hockey, football, and soccer.

PURPOSE: To compare accelerational forces to the head in high school-level football, hockey, and soccer athletes. METHODS: Acceleration of impact was measured within the helmet of high school hockey and football players during actual game play. A triaxial accelerometer was placed at the vertex of the helmet immediately adjacent to the players head. Peak acceleration (in g's) was measured and the Gadd Severity Index and Head Injury Criterion score calculated during actual play periods in several games over four seasons. We also recorded acceleration of head impacts in high school-level soccer

Unusual causes of stiffness in two hockey players.

PURPOSE: To describe two cases of competitive hockey players whose performance was impaired by generalized painless muscle stiffness. They were each found to have a separate type of myotonia. CASE SUMMARY: The first hockey player experienced stiffness only when initiating activity after a period of inactivity. He had a family history of muscle stiffness, grip myotonia clinically, and electrophysiologic findings of myotonic discharges. He had myotonia congenita. The stiffness in the second case was episodic and occurred during bouts of intense physical activity. The legs, arms, and neck were a

A former hockey player with knee and calf pain.

A 37-year-old man presented with severe pain in his left knee and calf. He had no other joint pain, fever, chills, or dysuria. He had previously gone to another hospital, where x-rays of the knees and legs reportedly showed inflammation and arthritis. He had been given oxycodone-acetaminophen, but the pain continued.

Syndesmotic ankle sprain in a recreational hockey player.

OBJECTIVE: To present a case of distal tibiofibular sprain, a rare injury among ubiquitous lateral ligament sprains of the ankle. CLINICAL FEATURES: A 45-yr-old recreational hockey player was treated for an ankle sprain demonstrating increased translation on the drawer test and pain with inversion stress, but also pain with external rotation and dorsiflexion. X-rays demonstrated no fractures. INTERVENTION AND OUTCOME: The conventional protocol of protect, rest, ice, compress and elevate (PRICE), employed for the more common lateral ankle sprains, was followed by early mobilization and propri

The Effect of Added Weight on Ice Hockey Performance.

In brief The effect of excess fat weight and equipment weight on skating performance is unclear because much of the player's skating movement is performed in a gliding position. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effect of added weight on a player's skating performance in an ice hockey fitness test. During added-weight conditions, the players were slower and had greater anaerobic endurance times. Coaches and players should be concerned about the players' fat weight and equipment weight because they contribute to slower performance times.

Contact allergy in Swedish professional ice hockey players.

BACKGROUND: Professional ice hockey players may contract irritant and allergic contact dermatitis. AIMS: To investigate the presence of contact allergy (CA) in professional ice hockey players in Sweden. METHODS: Ten teams from the two top leagues were assessed for potential occupational exposure to sensitizers. Exactly 107 players were patch tested with an extended baseline series and a working series, in total 74 test preparations. The CA rates were compared between the ice hockey players and controls from the general population and dermatitis patients. RESULTS: One out of 4 players had at

Imaging Review of Hockey-related Lower Extremity Injuries.

Hockey is a fast-paced contact sport with a high incidence of injuries. Although injuries are more frequent among elite players, recreational hockey injuries are a common issue faced by primary care and emergency physicians. Lower extremity injuries in hockey are particularly important because they account for approximately a third of all injuries and > 60% of all overuse injuries. This pictorial review provides the general and specialty trained radiologist with a knowledge of the patterns of lower extremity injury that occur in ice hockey.
