Hodgkin's disease displays an intriguing variation in incidence with age. For adult disease, there is striking bimodality in incidence with peaks in young adulthood and in older adulthood. On epidemiologic grounds, there appear to be three different diseases: childhood (0-14 years), young adult (15-34 years), and older adult Hodgkin's disease (55+ years). There are marked geographic variations in Hodgkin's disease incidence, but the variations are different for the three age groups. There are also interesting associations between Hodgkin's disease and markers of social class. For the young adu

Hodgkin disease is a nodal disease. Spinal cord or root compression is a rare complication and usually seen in the setting of progressive, advanced disease. We report 2 cases of Hodgkin disease in pediatric patients who presented with neurologic signs. One patient had paravertebral masses and involvement of thoracic vertebrae, which was initially misdiagnosed as spinal tuberculosis. The second patient who presented with paraplegia and bladder and bowel involvement had an epidural mass with collapse of thoracic vertebra. Lymph node biopsy revealed Hodgkin disease, mixed cellularity in both the …

The term extranodal disease refers to lymphomatous infiltration of anatomic sites other than the lymph nodes. Almost any organ can be affected by lymphoma, with the most common extranodal sites of involvement being the stomach, spleen, Waldeyer ring, central nervous system, lung, bone, and skin. The prevalence of extranodal involvement in non-Hodgkin lymphoma and Hodgkin disease has increased in the past decade. The imaging characteristics of extranodal involvement can be subtle or absent at conventional computed tomography (CT). Imaging of tumor metabolism with 2-[fluorine-18]fluoro-2-deoxy-d…

BACKGROUND: The aim of our study was to evaluate the long-term effects of chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy on lung function in 75 childhood Hodgkin disease (HD) and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) survivors several years after treatment.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We studied 37 HD and 38 NHL survivors. These patients were divided into two groups according to the treatment protocols applied. Group I consisted of 23 patients who were treated with both chemotherapy and thoracic irradiation and Group II consisted of 52 patients who were treated with chemotherapy and no thoracic irradiation. A detailed hist…

This paper reports a rare case of Hodgkin's disease with Sjögren syndrome in the course of Behçet's disease. A 43-year-old man developed arthralgia of bilateral knees, ankles, elbows and wrists in May, 1988. He had hazy vision and was diagnosed as having iridocyclitis and chorioretinitis in February, 1989. Gingival ulcer, penile ulcer, erythema nodosum on the right lower leg and superficial thrombophlebitis on the bilateral arms appeared in June, 1989. Therefore, he was diagnosed as Behçet's disease. He responded well to prednisolone. In November, 1989, he developed fever with positive CRP and

The occurrence of HIV associated non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) is a well recognized event. HIV associated Hodgkin's disease (HD) has also been observed. A unique patient with both entities is described. The patient was a 29 year old homosexual male who developed clinical IIA nodular sclerosis HD in 1985. He was HIV + with CD4/CD8 = 0.2 and his sister had HD 20 years earlier. He received MOPP and had a complete response. In October 1988 he developed weight loss with an abdominal mass and biopsy revealed diffuse small non-cleaved NHL, with bone marrow involvement. This was his first AIDS associat

The last 25 years have seen major changes in the imaging investigation and subsequent management of patients with Hodgkin's disease (HD) and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL); accurate staging is vital for prognostication and treatment in both, and particularly in HD. The choice of imaging modality for staging depends on its accuracy, impact on clinical decision-making, and availability. Modern CT scanners fulfil most of the desired criteria. The advent of CT scanning, along with the development of ever more effective chemotherapeutic regimens, has resulted in the virtual demise of bipedal lymphang

Recent studies have shown that some peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCL) could be derived from lymphocytes with cytotoxic potential. Therefore, we have investigated by immunohistochemistry 34 cases of PTCL including 2 cases of hepatosplenic gamma delta PTCL and 5 cases of sinonasal NK-cell lymphomas as well as 7 cases of T-lymphoblastic lymphomas (T-LBL) for the expression of the cytotoxic proteins TIA-1 and granzyme B. In addition, 50 cases of Hodgkin's disease (HD) were investigated in order to see if these cytotoxic proteins are expressed by Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg (HRS) cells. Expression

Intensive therapy and autologous stem cell transplantation represent the standard of care in most patients whose Hodgkin disease has not been cured with conventional chemotherapy. With more prolonged follow-up of autografted patients, the problems with autologous stem cell transplantation are clear. In particular, recurrent disease and late transplant-related complications limit the effectiveness of this approach. A number of autologous stem cell transplantation studies have reported prognostic factors that will help identify patients at high risk for relapse. Several new approaches for decrea…

Twenty-one patients were admitted to the surgical unit for management of an intra-thoracic mass following treatment of Hodgkin's disease (HD). They consisted of 14 males and 7 females, with a mean age of 34 years (range: 17-62). Seven had recurrent HD, 14 had a non-Hodgkin solid tumour. HD recurrences were treated with repeated chemotherapy with 4 prolonged survivals including 1 relapse (40 to 84 months follow-up). Non-Hodgkin tumours were 13 lung carcinomas, which were resected in 4 cases, with only 1 prolonged survival (54 months) and malignant schwannoma. HD recurrences are observed equally

There is wide consensus that lymphocyte predominance Hodgkin's disease (LPHD) represents a distinct clinicopathological entity of B-cell origin. However, inconsistent results of immunophenotyping studies and low confirmation rates among multi-center trials pose the question of whether LPHD really expresses heterogeneous marker profiles or whether it represents a mixture of morphologically similar entities. Among 2,836 cases reviewed by the German Hodgkin Study Group, immunophenotyping was performed on 1) cases classified or confirmed as LPHD by the reference panel (n = 104) or 2) cases not con

The development of lymphomas after SOT is a well-known complication of the immunosuppressive therapy necessary to prevent graft rejection. Epstein-Barr virus plays a central role in the pathogenesis of lymphomas because of its ability to transform infected cells. Differentiating PTLD from malignant lymphomas, especially HL can be challenging. We report on two patients, who developed EBV-associated lymphomas several years after SOT. A histological examination of lymph nodes led to a diagnosis of HL in both patients, who were started on chemotherapy according to current treatment protocols. A ra

The authors report 3 cases of Hodgkin's disease with intracranial involvement. The patients were 4, 12, and 15 years old (male/female=1/2). Initially, they were treated with ABVD or COPP chemotherapies and low-dose involved field radiotherapy. Intracranial recurrences occurred 27, 40, and 42 months after initial diagnosis, respectively. Two patients experienced convulsions and the other complained of diplopia. The metastatic lesions were located supratentorially with CT or MRI. Despite initial response achieved following systemic chemotherapy and external irradiation to cranial lesions, all pa

The descriptive and aetiological epidemiology of Hodgkin's Disease (HD) are reviewed. Key issues which are highlighted include the evidence suggesting that HD is a complex of related conditions that are part mediated by infectious diseases, immune deficits and genetic susceptibilities. There is little convincing evidence to suggest any other environmental factors are involved in the aetiology. The apparent changing pattern of disease by time and from country to country, needs careful future study.
