Understanding Home Activities Challenges of Older Adults Aging with Long-term Mobility Disabilities: Recommendations for Home Environment Design.

As age-related changes progress, individuals with long-term mobility disabilities experience more challenges in engaging with everyday activities. This archival analysis identified common activity challenges older adults with long-term mobility disabilities report and the type of strategies they employed to respond to these challenges, using the interview data (n=60) from the ACCESS Study. We discovered that activity challenges come from intrinsic factors (i.e., mobility limitations, strength, health conditions) as well as extrinsic factors (transferring and physical access). With these challe

An observational, longitudinal study on the home environment of people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: the research protocol of the Home Sweet Home study.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) represents an important public health challenge. Patients are confronted with limitations during activities of daily living (ADLs). Resident loved ones of patients with COPD may be uniquely positioned to witness these limitations. COPD may have an impact on not only the patients' life, but also on the lives of the resident loved ones. Furthermore, COPD exacerbation-related hospital admissions often occur in patients with COPD. However, whether and to what extent these admissions influence resident loved ones' burden and health status r

The Interaction of Multigenerational Home Environments With Hearing Loss, Cognition, and Depression.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether the interaction between multigenerational homes and hearing loss (HL) is associated with improved cognitive and depression outcomes. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional, epidemiologic study. Data was analyzed from the 2011-2012 cycle of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) for participants 18-80 years old with audiometric data. HL was measured with the four-frequency pure tone average in the better ear. Multigenerational homes have three or more generations or a skipped generation (i.e., < 18 and 60+). Cognition was measured with the

Conversation Initiation of Mothers, Fathers, and Toddlers in their Natural Home Environment.

In a conversational exchange, interlocutors use social cues including conversational turn-taking to communicate. There has been attention in the literature concerning how mothers, fathers, boys, and girls converse with each other, and in particular who initiates a conversation. Better understanding of conversational dynamics may deepen our understanding of social roles, speech and language development, and individual language variability. Here we use large-scale automatic analysis of 186 naturalistic daylong acoustic recordings to examine the conversational dynamics of 26 families with childre

Creating a home to promote recovery: the physical environments of Oxford House.

The interior and exterior physical characteristics of substance abuse recovery program dwellings (11 woman, 44 men) from three geographic sections of the United States were assessed at creating a "house-as-home" for residents. Although each house was independently governed and operated by residents, results indicated vast similarities among the interior characteristics, amenities, and structural aspects. These rented dwellings also had similar well-maintained exterior characteristics, despite their geographic locations. Follow-up interviews of former residents indicated that these house charac

Survey of the Home Music Environment of Children with Various Developmental Profiles.

Families with young children with and without developmental disabilities often create a musically rich home environment. Parent-child music engagement, like singing play songs, is associated with positive outcomes for children, parents, and their relationship. However, little is known about if the home music environment differs across diagnostic groups and if parent-child music engagement relates to parent-child affective attachment across families of diagnostically diverse children. Using an online questionnaire, the current study examined the home music environment of 340 families with young

The influence of environment in palliative care: supporting or hindering experiences of 'at-homeness'.

Florence Nightingale stated that the art of nursing is to provide an environment in which the patient is in the best position for nature to act upon, and Martha Rogers, in turn, emphasized that one part in nursing is to pattern the environment into a place where healing conditions are optimal. This paper presents a preliminary conceptual framework that describes the influence of environment in palliative care. Based on previously published studies, a conceptual framework describing the influence of environments in palliative care was developed consisting of an atmosphere of hospitality; an atm

Modifying the home environment or community setting for people with cognitive impairments.

We need a great deal of work on household and day care environmental design. Systematic research, linked to the degree of impairment and to individual lifestyles, is appropriate. I have only scratched the surface of environmental considerations, with some attention to distinguishing the issues of home, community, and institutional environments. It is important that we identify some of the unique priorities in each of these settings. To draw conclusions from institutional settings and apply them to the home is to miss some of the strengths inherent in the home. We have come a long way. Once, it

Comparisons of Auditory Brainstem Responses Between a Laboratory and Simulated Home Environment.

Purpose Miniaturization of digital technologies has created new opportunities for remote health care and neuroscientific fieldwork. The current study assesses comparisons between in-home auditory brainstem response (ABR) recordings and recordings obtained in a traditional lab setting. Method Click-evoked and speech-evoked ABRs were recorded in 12 normal-hearing, young adult participants over three test sessions in (a) a shielded sound booth within a research lab, (b) a simulated home environment, and (c) the research lab once more. The same single-family house was used for all home testing. Re

Home Reading Environment and Brain Activation in Preschool Children Listening to Stories.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Parent-child reading is widely advocated to promote cognitive development, including in recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics to begin this practice at birth. Although parent-child reading has been shown in behavioral studies to improve oral language and print concepts, quantifiable effects on the brain have not been previously studied. Our study used blood oxygen level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine the relationship between home reading environment and brain activity during a story listening task in a sample of preschool

Development of Virtual Reality-based Gait Training System Simulating Personal Home Environment.

We developed a virtual reality (VR)-based gait training system, which could be used by inpatients to train their gait function in a simulated home environment, to reduce the risk of falling after discharge. The proposed system simulates the home environment on a head-mounted display, in which a user can walk around freely. The system provides visual feedback in the event of a collision with an indoor object such as a wall or furniture, prompting the user to modify his or her gait pattern. We first applied the system to healthy young adults and confirmed the usefulness of visual feedback in red

Phonological awareness mediates the relationship between DCDC2 and reading performance with home environment.

Proficient reading requires critical phonological processing skill that interacts with both genetic and environmental factors. However, the precise nature of the relationships between phonological processing and genetic and environmental factors are poorly understood. We analyzed data from the Genes, Reading and Dyslexia (GRaD) Study on 1419 children ages 8-15 years from African-American and Hispanic-American family backgrounds living in North America. The analyses showed that phonological awareness mediated the relationship between DCDC2-READ1 and reading outcomes when parental education and
