The Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Lived Experience of Diverse Older Adults Living Alone With Cognitive Impairment.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, older adults with cognitive impairment living alone (an estimated 4.3 million individuals in the United States) were at high risk for negative health outcomes. There is an urgent need to learn how this population is managing during the pandemic. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This is a qualitative study of 24 adults aged 55 and older living alone with cognitive impairment from diverse racial/ethnic backgrounds. Participants' lived experiences during the pandemic were elicited via 59 ethnographic interviews conducted over the phone ei

The Home Health Virtual Simulation Training System Facilitates Home Hazard Identification and Mitigation Strategies.

Home healthcare workers (HHWs) are frequently exposed to occupational safety hazards when servicing clients in their homes. These hazards may take different forms, many of which could be broadly categorized as "Electric, Fire and Burn," "Environmental," or "Slip, Trip, and Lift" hazards. To address this issue, a home healthcare virtual simulation training system (HH-VSTS) was developed. Although prior studies have assessed the usability, usefulness, and desirability of the system, there was a need to determine if the knowledge gained through this training process generalizes to a real-world se

[Home hospice care, working support and rehabilitation for MS/NMO].

There are a huge amount of physical, mental and financial handicaps to patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) or neuromyelitis optica (NMO) and their family members, although treatment strategies have remarkably progressed recently. Among many important issues, to support them, here we make issues of home hospice care, working support and rehabilitation. We should consider social immaturity and ignorance to resolve the issues, and the key point to contribute useful support is consistent cooperation among medical teams and appropriate understanding of MS/NMO by all the people in our society as w

Influenza and COVID-19 Vaccination Coverage Among Health Care Personnel - United States, 2024-25 Respiratory Virus Season.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends that all health care personnel (HCP) receive an annual influenza vaccination to reduce the risk for influenza and influenza-related morbidity and mortality among themselves and their patients. For the 2024-25 respiratory virus season, ACIP also recommended that all HCP be vaccinated against COVID-19. During March 26-April 17, 2025, CDC conducted a nonprobability opt-in internet panel survey of 2,650 U.S. HCP to estimate influenza and COVID-19 vaccination coverage during the 2024-25 respiratory virus season. Overall, 76.3% of HC

Home health utilization association with discharge to community for people with dementia.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to identify home health utilization factors associated with successful discharge to community after home health care for patients with and without Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). METHODS: This was a retrospective study of 100% national Medicare home health data files (2016 to 2017). Multilevel logistic regression was used to study the relationship of home health utilization with a modified definition of successful discharge to community (M-SDC) after home health (no readmission or discharge within 30 days). Significant interactio

Family experiences of home caring for patients with HIV/AIDs in rural Limpopo Province, South Africa.

The increasing rate of patients with HIV/AIDS brings a burden to the already weakened health care delivery systems in Limpopo Province, South Africa. Hospitals alone cannot deal with the needs of AIDS patients effectively; the patients are discharged to be cared for at home. A qualitative study was conducted to explore and describe the experiences of the family members that are caring for patients with HIV/AIDS at home. Interviews were conducted with 12 participants who were purposively selected as the caregivers of patients suffering from AIDS at home. Ethical measures were adhered to for the

Essential, Yet Precarious, Mistreated, Sick and Medicalized: A Sequential Explanatory Mixed-Methods Study on Homecare Aides in Spain.

BACKGROUND: Homecare aides (HCAs) are professional non-family caregivers, who support dependent individuals to live at home with dignity; yet in Spain they remain understudied and vulnerable, often facing precarious working conditions. We aimed to characterize HCAs' employment, living conditions, health, and exposure to workplace violence and harassment, considering migrant background as a key axis of inequality. METHODS: We conducted a sequential explanatory mixed-methods study. Quantitative data came from an online respondent-driven sampling survey of 324 HCAs across Spain, with stratified

Costs of occupational injury and illness within the health services sector.

Knowledge of costs is essential to allocate medical resources efficiently. The authors' goal was to estimate and compare costs across occupations, industries, gender, race, and types of nonfatal injuries and illnesses. This is an incidence study of nationwide data, 1993. Nonfatal incidence data were drawn from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Annual Survey. Medical costs were from the Detailed Claims Information data set. Productivity (wage) costs were calculated using the Current Population Survey. Pain and suffering costs were estimated from data on jury verdicts. Injuries and illnesses to nur

[The work of the Public Health nurse in Finland 1920-1944].

Two private organizations, the Mannerheim League for Child Welfare and the Folkhälsan Association, established the Public Health Nursing institution in Finland in the beginning of the 1920's. These organizations laid the foundation of, developed and supervised the activities of the Public Health Nursing institution, which became statutory in 1944. They also started the training of public health nurses, which in 1931 was taken over by the state. In 1924 instructions were issued stating the duties, responsibilities and rights of the public health nurse. She had to visit each home in her district

The dependency at discharge instrument as a measure of resource use in home care.

The dependency at discharge instrument, developed to evaluate the needs for care of hospitalized patients on the day of discharge, was tested for its usefulness in measuring resource consumption in home health care. The instrument evaluates dependency in relation to bathing/hygiene, activity, technical procedures, and monitoring signs and symptoms. The sample used in this study consisted of 150 subjects admitted to one of three types of home health care agencies. Interrater reliability and internal consistency of the instrument were high. Factor analysis produced results similar to those of th

Assessment of home care aides' respiratory exposure to total volatile organic compounds and chlorine during simulated bathroom cleaning: An experimental design with conventional and "green" products.

Home care (HC) aide visits to clients' homes often involve cleaning and disinfecting (C&D) bathrooms. Some ingredients in C&D household products are associated with respiratory illness, including sodium hypochlorite (bleach) and quaternary ammonium compounds (quats). "Green" products may be safer for the environment, however there are limited quantitative evaluations of their respiratory risks. This study assessed airborne concentrations and time profiles of total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) and chlorine generated during typical bathroom cleaning performed by aides using conventional and

The experiences of people living with HIV/AIDS and of their direct informal caregivers in a resource-poor setting.

BACKGROUND: HIV/AIDS is a critical concern in South Africa, where extreme poverty and gender issues are major determinants of health. A comprehensive home-based care programme is needed to lessen the burden placed on the caregivers of those suffering from HIV/AIDS. The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the challenges faced by people who are living with HIV/AIDS and by their caregivers in resource-poor, remote South African villages. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with nine persons living with HIV/AIDS and their nine direct informal caregivers. Interviews explored

Association between cognitive diagnosis and a range of significant life events in an elderly essential tremor cohort: a longitudinal, prospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although essential tremor (ET) patients have greater odds of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia than age-matched controls, the functional consequences of these enhanced odds are unknown. We examined associations between cognitive diagnosis and the occurrence of near falls, falls, use of a walking aid or a home health aide, non-independent living, or hospitalizations within a prospective, longitudinal study of ET patients. METHODS: A total of 131 ET patients (mean baseline age = 76.4 ± 9.4 years) completed a battery of neuropsychological tests and questions about life eve

From Research-to-Practice: An Adaptation and Dissemination of the COMPASS Program for Home Care Workers.

The COMmunity of Practice And Safety Support (COMPASS) program was developed to prevent injuries and advance the health and well-being of home care workers. The program integrates elements of peer-led social support groups with scripted team-based programs to help workers learn together, solve problems, set goals, make changes, and enrich their supportive professional network. After a successful pilot study and randomized controlled trial, COMPASS was adapted for the Oregon Home Care Commission's training system for statewide dissemination. The adapted program included fewer total meetings (7
