BACKGROUND: Nursing home-acquired pneumonia (NHAP) is a common infection among nursing home residents. There is also a high prevalence of dysphagia in nursing home residents and they suffer more often from comorbidity and multimorbidity. This puts nursing home residents at higher risk of (mortality from) NHAP. Therefore it is important to gain more insight into the incidence of NHAP and the associated medical conditions in nursing home residents with dysphagia.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate possible associations between NHAP and dysphagia in nursing home residents and to search for a medical risk

BACKGROUND: Despite the need for and benefits of medications, polypharmacy (defined here as concurrent use of > or =9 medications) in nursing home residents is a concern. As the number of medications taken increases, so does the risk for adverse events. Monitoring polypharmacy in this population is important and can improve the quality of nursing home care.
OBJECTIVES: The aims of this article were to estimate the use of polypharmacy in residents of nursing homes in the United States, to examine the associations between select resident and facility characteristics and polypharmacy, and to det

During a term of probation for the doctoral course in sociology at the university of Nijmegen a research was made for the relatinship between patients and staff on the ward of a nursing home. This relation was investigated with the use of Elias and Scotson's model of an established and outsiders figuration. In this figuaration are several sources of power, as fysical capacities, knowledge, key-positions and cohesion, important. These are considered more thoroughly. Some of the central problems of a nursing home are becoming more clear in the elaboratin of processes as exclusion and stigmatizat

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders are common among nursing home residents. However, the possible involvement of psychological factors has been given little attention up until now. We investigated nursing home residents' perspective on psychological factors and sleep disorders within the nursing home environment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a qualitative interview study comprising episodic interviews with 30 nursing home residents in five different nursing homes. The data was analysed by thematic coding.
RESULTS: Nursing home residents require peace of mind in order to sleep well. Ruminatio

The care provided to the residents of the Alzheimer's unit of the Pont-de-Veyle nursing home follows four main ethical principles: dignity, autonomy, beneficence and non-maleficence. The team demonstrates flexibility with regard to the washing and dressing of the residents, meal times and the organisation of activities. It does not resort to restraint. The respect of the person's dignity and privacy is maintained not only during nursing care but in all other aspects of their life.

OBJECTIVES: To review the literature on sleep disturbances in nursing home settings. Although 50% of older adults complain of sleep difficulties, increased reports of sleep disturbances are generally associated with poor health. After controlling for comorbidities that often contribute to poor sleep, studies have shown that primary sleep disturbances in healthy older adults are, in fact, rare. Although common in older adults, sleep complaints are even more prevalent in elders living in nursing homes and the sleep disturbances experienced by institutionalized older adults are more severe. Visiting nurses have provided care to people in their homes for more than a century. Although their role has changed dramatically during the past 100 years, home care nurses remain committed to the key principle of promoting health and welfare while sustaining the values of patient and the home. Patients referred for home care today have increasingly complex and extensive needs. Financial constraints imposed by the government and insurance carriers have accelerated the need for efficiency and excellence in communication, coordination of care, and management of these patients. AIM: To describe the difficulties faced when administering oral medication to patients with swallowing difficulties in nursing homes, the methods that are used to overcome these difficulties and their appropriateness.
METHOD: A self-administered questionnaire was given to all participants (n = 763) at eight regional study days for nurses employed in independent nursing homes. The questionnaire included sections on respondent and nursing home demographics, extent of and methods used to overcome swallowing difficulties, experience of overcoming swallowing difficulties and nurses' opinions on th

Increasing numbers of stroke patients with profound functional, psychological, and cognitive impairments are receiving rehabilitation in Medicare skilled nursing facilities. These facilities vary substantially in the patients they admit, the volume and intensity of therapy they provide, and the outcomes they achieve. Facilities with an orientation toward rehabilitation and community discharge providing more intensive therapy services by a wider range of skilled professionals have better outcomes.

IMPORTANCE: US nursing home closures, whether planned or unexpected, can disrupt continuity of care, place additional burdens on remaining facilities, and disproportionately affect vulnerable populations. It is important to understand the trends and factors associated with these closures, as such knowledge can inform policy decisions, guide resource allocation, and help develop strategies to mitigate negative effects on both residents and the broader health care system.
OBJECTIVE: To examine nursing home operational dynamics in the US and to identify how facilities transition through openings

BACKGROUND: Antidementia medication can provide symptomatic improvements in patients with Alzheimer's disease, but there is a lack of consensus guidance on when to start and stop treatment in the nursing home setting.
METHODS: We describe utilization patterns of cholinesterase inhibitors (ChEI) and memantine for 3,50,197 newly admitted NH residents with dementia between 2011 and 2018.
RESULTS: Overall, pre-admission use of antidementia medications declined from 2011 to 2018 (ChEIs: 44.5% to 36.9%; memantine: 27.4% to 23.2%). Older age, use of a feeding tube, and greater functional dependency

Scabies, caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei var hominis, is a common infestation that presents with intense itching. Crusted scabies, also known as Norwegian scabies, is a severe variant of classic scabies that is characterized by hyperkeratotic lesions and often manifests in immunosuppressed patients. There is both a high parasitic load and high infectivity with this form of scabies because crusted scabies can look similar to many conditions including psoriasis, eczema, and seborrheic dermatitis, diagnosis can be difficult and is based on both clinical findings and microscopic detection of
