Housebound service users face significant barriers in accessing routine dental care, resulting in missed opportunities for early detection of mouth cancer, and contributing to delayed diagnoses or presentation of advanced stages of the disease. District nurses are uniquely positioned to facilitate oral health assessments for housebound service users and to embed oral health into holistic assessments. Developing a close working relationship with the wider multidisciplinary team, including dental services, may contribute to district nursing teams being better equipped to complete oral health ass

After long-term care insurance commenced in April 2000, various types of in-home care began, including delivery of prescriptions medicines to the elderly. However, the effects of in-home care workers on patient drug compliance are unclear as yet. In this study, we examined the characteristics of the care workers who delivered prescription medicines to the elderly, and analyzed the effects on patient drug compliance and knowledge about medication. The subjects included 163 homecare recipients aged 60 and older, who were taking more than one prescribed drug, who ranked worse than J-2 who were ph

BACKGROUND: The twin problems of severe alcohol dependence and homelessness are associated with precarious living and multiple acute, social and chronic harms. While much attention has been focused on harm reduction services for illicit drug use, there has been less attention to harm reduction for this group. Managed alcohol programs (MAPs) are harm reduction interventions that aim to reduce the harms of severe alcohol use, poverty and homelessness. MAPs typically provide accommodation, health and social supports alongside regularly administered sources of beverage alcohol to stabilize drinkin

IMPORTANCE: As older adults live longer in the community, many, particularly those with dementia, may become bedbound at the end of life and require extensive support from caregivers.
OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence and associated characteristics of bedbound status during the last year of life among community-dwelling decedents, and to examine differences by dementia status.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study used data from rounds 1 through 13 from the National Health and Aging Trends Study to identify individuals aged 65 years or older who were community-dwe

Persons with limited mobility are at risk for pressure ulcers. The development of pressure ulcers following earthquakes has been reported secondary to disaster-related spinal cord injury. In the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake, members of a disaster medical assistance team (DMAT), which included plastic surgeons and wound, ostomy, and continence (WOC) nurses working in acute care hospitals, temporary clinics, evacuation centers, and the community noticed an increase in the number of requests for pressure ulcer care. A review of hospital records and verbal reports

Guided by the Convoy Model of Social Relations, this study examines the longitudinal association between homebound status and social isolation in the United States. Data were drawn from the National Health and Aging Trends Study (Rounds 1-9, N = 6,464). Participants were categorized as non-homebound, semi-homebound, or homebound. The level of social isolation was measured across four domains: marital status, religious participation, club participation, and family and friends. Mixed-effects regression models were used to examine the longitudinal associations between homebound status and social

OBJECTIVES: Most "homestay" high school students come to Canada from East Asian countries such as China, Korea and Japan to attend school while living with another family. Our objectives were to examine: 1) the characteristics of homestay youth compared to immigrant and Canadian-born East Asian youth and 2) whether their health risk behaviours are similar to immigrant or Canadian-born East Asian youth.
METHODS: We used the 2003 British Columbia Adolescent Health Survey to examine characteristics of East Asian youth and their health risk behaviours, including sexual behaviours, substance abuse

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: This case report describes the clinical decision making process of a physical therapist whose examination of a home bound elderly woman led to a referral for hospitalization. We illustrate how the use of a comprehensive systems screen and thorough examination identified a patient with treatable conditions that required medical care.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient was a frail 93-year-old woman. She was referred for home-care physical therapy with multiple medical comorbidities and functional decline following a short hospitalization for fall-related injuries. Her functio

Compared with other age groups, older adults (defined here as persons aged ≥65 years) are at higher risk for COVID-19-associated morbidity and mortality and have therefore been prioritized for COVID-19 vaccination (1,2). Ensuring access to vaccines for older adults has been a focus of federal, state, and local response efforts, and CDC has been monitoring vaccination coverage to identify and address disparities among subpopulations of older adults (2). Vaccine administration data submitted to CDC were analyzed to determine the prevalence of COVID-19 vaccination initiation among adults aged ≥65

INTRODUCTION: Incontinence is a common, distressing condition, most prevalent in older people. There is an unmet need for effective interventions to support continence. This review focuses on non-pharmacological interventions to reduce incontinence among homebound older people. Aim: to identify interventions with potential to be delivered by care workers, nurses or family members in a person's home.
METHODS: Multiple databases were searched until 15 September 2023 for randomised controlled trials reporting home-based interventions for incontinence for older people (≥65 years) living at home.
