Drugs and homicide: a theory.

In this paper we report our experience with 24 cases in which there was a homicide or homicides committed in association with use of large amounts of psychoactive drugs. Many, if not most of these homicides, would not have occurred without drug effects, for frequently there was evidence of grossly illogical thinking in close temporal association with use of intoxicants and in many cases there was no previous history of violence, no evidence of premeditation, no plan to avoid arrest and little or no discernible motivation. Usually there were multiple losses or other severe stress in the lives o

Homicide by barbiturates and alcohol.

Death from the misuse of alcohol and barbiturates is frequently encountered in most medical examiner/coroner offices. The cause of death is often quite apparent from the pathological and toxicological findings; however, the manner of death often gives the examining official some difficulty. The usual dilemma is to unravel whether the dead individual intentionally took the lethal combination in order to cause his/her own death or whether the combination was unintentionally ingested without awareness of the potentially lethal combination. The manner of death in these cases is either suicidal, ac

A series of hospital homicides.

Patient deaths in hospitals due to medical staff are very rare. In the autumn of 2006, preliminary proceedings were initiated against a nurse on account of an overdose of medication leading to death, administered during her care of the patient. In the course of these proceedings, exhibits relating to the deaths of a total of 13 patients who had died due to chemical-toxicological causes were reviewed. Nine of them were exhumed. On average, death had occurred 22 months prior to exhumation (range of 1-34 months). The average age of the deceased was 76 years (range of 65-92 years). In five of the

The role of marijuana in homicide.

In this paper we examine the relationship between marijuana use and homicide. Data derive from interviews with 268 individuals incarcerated in New York State correctional facilities for homicides that occurred in 1984. We found that in terms of lifetime use, marijuana was the most commonly used illicit drug in this sample; that about one-third of respondents who had ever used marijuana used the drug in the 24-hour period before the homicide; and that almost three-quarters of those respondents were experiencing some type of effect from the drug when the homicide occurred. A total of 18 responde

Mania, homicide and severe violence.

BACKGROUND: Mania has been reported to be a risk factor for aggression and violence in psychiatric hospitals, but the extent of any association between mania and severe interpersonal violence in community settings is not known. AIM: To examine the association between mania and severe violence in a series of patients found not guilty by reason of mental illness (NGMI). METHODS: A review of the court documents of those found NGMI of offences involving severe violence, including homicide, attempted homicide and assault causing wounding or serious injury, in New South Wales between 1992 and 2008

Patterns of non-firearm homicide.

Sixty-two recent non-firearm homicides dealt with by an inner London public mortuary were studied. The majority of homicides involved stabbing--usually multiple wounds to the trunk. These were followed by blunt instrument homicides--nearly all involved multiple blows to the head, and asphyxiation--usually consisting of strangulation with a ligature being employed in the majority of cases. Homicides tended to occur during the evening and night in spring and early summer. Most victims were found to be in the 20-39 age group, with male victims outnumbering females in a 2:1 ratio. A marked differe

Negligent homicide by traumatic asphyxia.

We presented an unusual case of negligent homicide by thorax compression, which is the expanded concept of traumatic asphyxia. A 58-year-old man was restrained in the prone position by six prison officers. They were ordered by their superiors to continue restraining him for about 15 min and the victim died. At the forensic autopsy, typical findings of thorax compression with intramuscular hemorrhages on the back and multiple fractures of the ribs were observed. No evidence of neck compression/smothering or other fatal issues likely to occur by chest compression was found. The reconstruction of

Homicide by manual occipitoatlantal dislocation.

Occipitoatlantal dislocation is usually seen as a fatal injury in traffic accidents and has rarely been reported as a consequence of a homicide. The authors report the case of a women presenting a fatal occipitoatlantal dislocation, the circumstances of which pointed to a homicidal origin. Blood extravasation surrounding the muscles of the posterior part of the neck as well as abnormal mobility of the cranio-cervical joint was noted during autopsy; thus a complete dissection of this region was performed. This led to the finding of a fracture of the left occipital condyle and of the left superi

Homicide-suicide in older persons.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the annual incidence of homicide-suicide and to compare patterns and antecedents in old and young spousal/consortial cases. METHODS: Homicide-suicide cases were ascertained in four medical examiner districts covering seven entire Florida counties from 1988 to 1994. The districts were chosen to determine rates in two regions of Florida, comparable in size of the total population and proportion of older persons. Annual homicide-suicide incidence rates per 100,000 population and homicide-suicides as a percentage of total homicides and total

Homicide and community-based psychiatry.

The authors studied the records of all persons convicted of homicide or found not guilty by reason of insanity during the uears 1963 through 1975, 6 years before and after the opening of the community-based psychiatric facility, in Albany County, New York. Using the Fisher Exact Probability Test, a statistically significant increase was found for those found not guilty by reason of insanity (p = .041) and those with a history of mental illness found guilty (p = .036). Other factors, including age of the perpetrator, use of alcohol, and relationship to the victim, were also examined. The author

An Examination of Supplementary Homicide Reports and Fatal Encounters Data on Police-Caused Homicides.

The two official sources of police-caused homicides, National Vital Statistics System and FBI Supplementary Homicide Reports, have been widely criticized for underreporting and measurement error. Independent data collections emerged in the 2010s after several high-profile incidents of the police killing unarmed citizens. These collections include Fatal Encounters (FE), Mapping Police Violence, The Guardian, and The Washington Post. The validity of these datasets is unknown, and none of them extend before the year 2000. Researchers interested in studying police-caused homicides before 2000 are

Mental Health of Homicidally Bereaved Individuals: A Systematic Review of Post-Homicide Factors.

Experiencing the homicide of a loved one has a substantial impact on the mental health of family members and friends who must survive their loved one's tragic death. This systematic review aims to synthesize the current findings on post-homicide factors and identify the factors most frequently related to the mental health of homicidally bereaved individuals (HBI). Four databases were searched (PsycINFO, SCOPUS, Sociological Abstract, PubMed). The selection of studies was based on a peer review process conducted by two independent researchers to ensure interrater reliability. The articles were

Psychopathological profiles of inmates convicted for femicide, other familial homicides, or attempted homicides.

Femicides and family-related homicides represent a significant concern, with over 50% of homicides occurring within the family setting. This study aimed to explore the complex factors, including psychological aspects, behind such crimes, focusing on a sample of inmates incarcerated for homicide, attempted homicide, or femicide. The study analyzed data from 11 inmates (8 males, 3 females) incarcerated for homicide or attempted homicide. Demographic, clinical, and criminological data were collected, and psychological functioning was assessed using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) and th

The epidemiology of homicide among older adults: retrospective analysis using data from the Victorian Homicide Register.

Older adult homicide is unique and under-researched, requiring immediate attention due to the rapidly ageing population. The current study aims to contribute to the description of homicide at the individual, interpersonal, incident and community levels. This research comprised a whole of state jurisdiction population-based retrospective analysis of homicide deaths of older adults aged 65 years and older reported to the Coroner between 2001 and 2015. Descriptive statistical analyses were conducted to compare older adult homicides by sex and the deceased-offender relationship. There were 59 homi

Partner homicide-suicide involving female homicide victims: a population-based study in North Carolina, 1988-1992.

Homicide-suicide is a form of fatal violence in which an individual commits homicide and subsequently kills him- or herself. One hundred and sixteen homicide-suicide events involving 119 female homicide victims in North Carolina from 1988-1992 were identified through state medical examiner files. Case files were reviewed retrospectively to identify event characteristics, precursors, and typologies. In 86% of cases the perpetrator was the current or former partner of the victim. During the study period, 24% of men who killed their female partners in North Carolina subsequently committed suicide
