A 63-year-old woman presented with a 4-hr history of sneezing, visual disturbance, and dyspnea after drinking foreign honey dissolved in hot water. Severe hypotension (56/30 mmHg) and bradycardia (55 beats/min) were identified on arrival. She was immediately administered intravenous atropine (0.5 mg) and a bolus injection of Ringer solution (2,000 mL). Circulatory abnormality dramatically improved immediately after atropine injection and she was discharged on hospital day 2. We speculate that the patient suffered from honey intoxication because of manifestations such as hypotension and bradyca

BACKGROUND: Honey is a viscous, supersaturated sugar solution derived from nectar gathered and modified by the honeybee, Apis mellifera. Honey has been used since ancient times as a remedy in wound care. Evidence from animal studies and some trials has suggested honey may accelerate wound healing.
OBJECTIVES: The objective was to determine whether honey increases the rate of healing in acute wounds (burns, lacerations and other traumatic wounds) and chronic wounds (venous ulcers, arterial ulcers, diabetic ulcers, pressure ulcers, infected surgical wounds).
SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Co

This study examined the textural and rheological properties of Algerian honeys and margarines formulated with honey and their sensory acceptance. Textural analysis shows that all honeys and margarines enriched with honey are spreadable, easy to swallow by the consumer and to adhere to a surface (bread, teeth, tongue, etc.), and have suitable adhesiveness. The hardness and elasticity values reveal that H5 honey and its M5 margarine are less hard and regain their height more quickly. The rheological analysis reveals that all honeys and formulated margarines non-Newtonian behavior at 25 and 45°C

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the allergenic components of honey, 23 patients allergic to honey were investigated. All displayed allergic symptoms after ingestion of honey or honey-containing products, ranging from itching in the oral mucosa to severe systemic symptoms to anaphylactic shock.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Immunoblot analyses of the patients' sera revealed IgE binding to proteins at a molecular mass of 54 kd, 60 kd, 72 kd, or to a 30 kd/33 kd double band, or to both in sunflower honey extracts. The three bands corresponding to higher molecular mass proteins could also be detected in the th

Honey allergy is a very rare, but serious health condition. In this study, we presented six patients who described systemic allergic reactions after ingestion of honey. Three of the six patients had suffered from anaphylaxis. Honey-specific IgE was measured and skin-prick tests for honey were performed to diagnose honey allergy. The results of honey-specific IgE of all patients were positive. Four patients had high serum-specific IgE for honey bee venom and two of five patients had also experienced anaphylaxis due to bee stings. Skin-prick tests with honey and pollens were positive in five pat

A 49-year-old woman with a history of HIV and hypothyroidism developed symptomatic hypotension, bradycardia, and gastrointestinal distress after consuming honey she had purchased during a recent trip to Nepal. Her travel history and symptoms raised concerns about mad honey intoxication. Her condition improved with supportive care, including IV fluids, and atropine was not required for bradycardia. This case underscores the importance of considering mad honey toxicity in patients with unexplained cardiovascular symptoms and a history of honey ingestion. As interest in natural and traditional me

Honey bees are indispensable insects. Their pollination services support modern agriculture and natural ecosystems. Managed honey bee colonies face increasing threats to their survival, ranging from environmental stressors that include agrochemicals to infestations of arthropod pests and infections with microbial pathogens. Like humans, honey bees have a native gut microbiome that supports their health. However, the bee gut microbiome has a simpler composition than the gut microbiome of mammals, and its main constituent bacterial species can be easily cultured outside of the host. This experim

Honey has been considered as a therapeutic agent; its successful application in the treatment of non-healing infected wounds has promoted its further clinical usage for treating various disorders including eye disorders. There is evidence that honey may be helpful in treating dry eye disease, post-operative corneal edema, and bullous keratopathy. Furthermore, it can be used as an antibacterial agent to reduce the ocular flora. This review discusses both the current knowledge of and new perspectives for honey therapy in ophthalmology.

Honey is a natural sweet substance that bees produce by transforming flower nectar or other sweet secretions of plants. It has widespread use in traditional medicine in various parts of the world. It has been reported to assist in building the entire central nervous system. The beneficial effects of honey have been attributed to the possible polyphenolic contents and some other constituents. The geographical locations and the sources of plant nectars may contribute to the effects of honey samples. Thus, we evaluated the neuropharmacological effects of six samples of honey (10%, 20% and 40%(V)/

BACKGROUND: Many studies have demonstrated that honey has antibacterial activity in vitro, and a small number of clinical case studies have shown that application of honey to severely infected cutaneous wounds is capable of clearing infection from the wound and improving tissue healing. Research has also indicated that honey may possess anti-inflammatory activity and stimulate immune responses within a wound. The overall effect is to reduce infection and to enhance wound healing in burns, ulcers, and other cutaneous wounds. The objective of the study was to find out the results of topical woun

Honey has been used as a medicine throughout the ages and in more recent times has been "rediscovered" by the medical profession for treatment of burns, infected wounds, and skin ulcers. The large volume of literature reporting its effectiveness indicates that honey has potential for the treatment of periodontal disease, mouth ulcers, and other problems of oral health.

The main drawback in using coloration to identify honey bee subspecies is the lack of knowledge regarding genetic background, subjectivity of coloration grading, and the effect of the environment. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effect of environmental temperature on the abdominal coloration of honey bee workers and to develop a tool for quantifying abdominal coloration. We obtained four frames of honey bee brood from two colonies and incubated them at two different temperatures (30 and 34 °C). One colony had workers exhibiting yellow marks on the abdomen, while the other did not. We

Honey adulteration is a growing concern due to its health benefits and high nutritional content. Traditional methods like Melissopalynology are ineffective in detecting adulterated honey. This research presents a comparative study of machine learning algorithms for detecting adulteration in honey. The study uses hyperspectral imaging, a promising tool for food quality assurance, to classify and predict adulteration in honey. The proposed model relies on hyper-spectrum images and improves the accuracy of existing models using hyperparameter tuning. The dataset used includes segmented and pre-pr
