Detection of hoof lesions using digital infrared thermography in dairy cows.

The objective was to investigate infrared thermography (IRT) as a noninvasive diagnostic tool for early detection of foot pathologies in dairy cows. This was achieved by measuring changes in coronary band temperature before and after claw trimming in response to visual detection of abnormalities of the hooves. We hypothesized that by focusing on the coronary band region, IRT is able to detect lesions of the hind limbs of dairy cows associated with lameness. In this study, 626 individual observations were collected from 24 cows before and after claw trimming. Infrared thermography was used to a

Etiological and immunological aspects of equine hoof canker.

Chronic equine proliferative pododermatitis (canker) is a hypertrophic hoof disease characterized by excessive proliferation of horn-producing tissues resulting from dyskeratosis of keratinocytes. Since its etiology remains unknown, this study investigated potential etiological agents and evaluated biochemical and immunological profiles. Ten horses with hoof canker and ten healthy controls of the Norik of Muran breed were included. Dermatophytes and bovine papillomavirus 1 and 2 (BPV 1/2) were not detected. Candida glabrata was the most frequently identified species in both affected and health

Better hoof, better horse - genetic correlations between ability to race barefoot and performance in trotting horses.

Harness racing is popular in several parts of the world, and the ability to race barefoot is an important trait for success because of its effect on racing time. Barefoot racing is also discussed in terms of animal welfare because not all horses have hooves that tolerate racing without shoes. In Swedish Standardbred trotters (SB) and Swedish-Norwegian Coldblooded trotters (CB), the proportion of barefoot races and the probability to race barefoot in any given race (barefoot status) have low-to-moderate heritability (h2 = 0.07-0.28). However, the genetic correlation between the ability to race

Molecular evidence of sterile tissue damage during pathogenesis of the pododermatitis aseptica hemorrhagica circumscripta is associated with disturbed epidermal-dermal homeostasis.

Pododermatitis aseptica hemorrhagica circumscripta is associated with metalloproteinase 2 weakening of distal phalangeal suspensory structures and sinkage of the distal phalanx in the claw capsule. Pressure from the tuberculum flexorium on the sole epidermis and dermis produces hemorrhagic tissue injury and defective horn production appearing as yellow-red, softened claw horn in region 4 of the sole. A model of the MAPK/ERK signal cascade orchestrating epidermal-dermal homeostasis was employed to determine if sterile inflammatory responses are linked to disturbed signal transduction for epider

Hoof slip duration at impact in galloping Thoroughbred ex-racehorses trialling eight shoe-surface combinations.

Horseshoes used during racing are a major determinant of safety as they play a critical role in providing traction with the ground surface. Although excessive hoof slip is detrimental and can predispose to instabilities, falls and injuries, some slip is essential to dissipate energy and lower stresses on the limb tissues during initial loading. This study aimed to quantify hoof slip duration in retired Thoroughbred racehorses galloping over turf and artificial (Martin Collins Activ-Track) tracks at the British Racing School in the following four shoeing conditions: 1) aluminium; 2) steel; 3) G

Three-dimensional structure analysis of mouse nails using synchrotron radiation.

Until now, studies on nail diseases have been performed through microscopic diagnosis and microscopic computed tomography (micro-CT). However, these kinds of conventional methods have some limitations. Firstly, the microscopic method is considered the gold standard for medical diagnosis. However, due to the use of fluorescent materials, the sample is damaged and it takes a long time to get results. Secondly, while micro-CT is a noninvasive method to get inner structure images of the sample with high resolution, the penetration and spatial resolution are insufficient for studying the microstruc

Radiographic parameters of the digit in a cohort population of Amiata donkeys.

BACKGROUND: The most common musculoskeletal conditions reported in donkeys are related to the foot. Radiographic examinations are clinically important in the diagnosis of foot abnormalities and are commonly used. However, few studies have been conducted to establish the normal radiographic appearance of a donkey's foot. AIM: To determine the radiographic features of the front digit in healthy Amiata donkeys. METHODS: Radiographic examinations were performed on 56 forefeet of 28 Amiata donkeys. Three radiographic views of each front foot were taken: lateromedial, dorsopalmar and dorso-65°prox

Gross anatomy and histological analysis of manual unguals of Drepanosauromorpha (Sauropsida: Diapsida) and description of a new taxon from the Sonsela Member of the Chinle Formation (Late Triassic) of the southwestern United States.

Unguals ("claws") are important tools that allow terrestrial vertebrates to navigate their environments, from subduing prey to climbing, running, and digging, with the shape of the element being broadly correlated with their ecological niche. Middle Triassic-Late Triassic drepanosauromorphs (Sauropsida: Diapsida) have been hypothesized to occupy various niches and functional modes from arboreality to fossoriality based on a range of evidence including claw anatomy. Hypertrophied manual unguals are present in many members of Drepanosauromorpha and vary in shape from the strongly curved, mediola

Investigation on the effectiveness of a new hoof care product to sustainably reduce and prevent digital dermatitis in dairy cow herds.

The regular application of hoof care and cleaning products is an important part of protocols designed to reduce burden of disease caused by the ubiquitous and multifactorial hoof disease digital dermatitis (DD) in dairy cows. Commonly used hoof care products such as formalin or copper sulfate applied through foot baths or by spraying hindfeet are often irritant to the skin as well as harmful to the environment or human health, and scientifically proven evidence of their efficacy is scarce. Thus, in a clinical controlled trial, we investigated whether the use of a hoof care product based on a m

Losers can win: Thermoregulatory advantages of regenerated claws of fiddler crab males for establishment in warmer microhabitats.

Fiddler crab males present a hypertrophied claw, which is used for sexual and aggressive displays, fights with competitors, and has been proposed as an important thermoregulatory organ for heat control. Two claw morphologies can be observed within fiddler crab populations: brachychelous claws (unregenerated) and leptochelous claws (regenerated). The leptochelous morphotype presents less muscle mass and longer fingers, resulting in a less advantageous weapon in fights. Considering their slender shape, we hypothesized that the leptochelous morphotype would present lower thermal inertia and be mo

Effect of footbath protocols for prevention and treatment of digital dermatitis in dairy cattle: A systematic review and network meta-analysis.

Digital dermatitis (DD) is an infectious bacterial disease affecting cattle feet. Footbaths are a common herd-level control method for DD; however, variations in product, concentration, and frequency of use complicate comparisons between protocols. The objective of this systematic review was to evaluate all walk-through footbath protocols reported that determined efficacy for prevention and treatment of DD lesions in dairy cattle. An extensive literature search was conducted, including electronic databases and gray literature updated until March 2018. Studies identified included all liquid wal

Effect of rider and riding style on deformation of the front hoof wall in warmblood horses.

A rider modifies the weight distribution and dynamic balance of the horse. But what effect does a rider have on the mechanical behaviour of the hoof during each stance phase? Does riding style have any effect on this behaviour? We attempted to answer these questions using strains recorded from 5 rosette strain gauges glued to the surface of the front hooves of 4 Warmblood horses. Comparisons were made between strains with and without a rider, and when the rider was sitting, rising at a trot, or in a forward seated position. The change in strains from trot to lead or nonlead at a canter, and th

Hoof lesions in partly housed pasture-based dairy cows.

Lameness is a symptom of a painful disorder affecting the limbs, which impacts dairy cow welfare and productivity. Lameness is primarily caused by hoof lesions. The prevalence of different lesion types can differ depending on environmental conditions and farm management practices. The aims of this observational study were to establish the cow-level and herd-level lesion prevalence during both housing and grazing periods in a partly housed, pasture-based system, establish the prevalence of lesions always associated with pain ("alarm" lesion), identify the lesions associated with a higher lamene

Novel treatment for chronic pododermatitis in an Indian elephant (Elephas maximus indicus) with Mohs' paste.

Asian and African elephants are frequently afflicted by foot disorders that can be very challenging to manage even with aggressive therapy. Such conditions may have indirect life-threatening effects. Mohs' paste (zinc chloride based escharotic agent) was used to treat a female Indian elephant (Elephas maximus indicus) aged 39 years with foot disorder at Kanazawa Zoological Gardens. Degenerated hyperplastic tissue was observed inside the hoofs of digits 2 and 5. Mohs' paste was applied on the lesions, which coagulated the hyperplastic tissue and restrained its proliferation. Subsequently, the h

Training giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata) for front foot radiographs and hoof care.

For a large herd of reticulated giraffes, a mainly operant-based training program was created for front foot radiographs and hoof trims in an effort to diagnose and better manage lameness. Behaviors were shaped in a restricted contact set-up, using a positive reinforcement procedure to teach a series of mastered cued behaviors. This training was used to obtain lateral and lateral oblique front foot radiographs for the entire herd. Radiographs were diagnostic for multiple possible causes of lameness including fractures and osteitis of the distal phalangeal bone, hoof overgrowth, osteoarthritis

Hydration and N-acetyl-l-cysteine alter the microstructure of human nail and bovine hoof: implications for drug delivery.

This work aimed to (a) characterize the microstructure and porosity of human nail and bovine hoof by mercury intrusion porosimetry and SEM image analysis, (b) study the effects of hydration and of N-acetyl-l-cysteine treatment on the microstructure of both membranes, and (c) determine whether the microstructural modifications were associated with changes in drug penetration measured by standard diffusion studies. Bovine hoof surface is more porous than nail surface although there were no differences between the mean surface pore sizes. Hydration and N-acetyl-l-cysteine increased the roughness
