Hospice Care Experiences Among Decedents With Huntington's Disease.

CONTEXT: Little is known about the hospice care experiences of those with Huntington's Disease (HD). OBJECTIVES: Our objective is to provide the first national characterization of hospice care quality for patients with HD and their families. METHODS: We used national Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) Hospice Survey data to examine caregiver-reported experiences of hospice care. We analyzed data from 550 caregivers of patients with HD and 1,098,819 caregivers of patients without HD who died January 2016-June 2019 while receiving hospice care from 3,845 hospices n

Physicians and hospice care: attitudes, knowledge, and referrals.

Underutilization of hospice care continues to be a public health issue in the United States. Physician barriers related to incorrect knowledge and unfavorable attitudes have been hypothesized as part of the explanation. We conducted a mail survey of 264 area physicians, obtaining a response rate of 72% (n = 190). The survey examined attitudes toward, knowledge about, and perceptions of benefits and barriers to hospice care. Physicians demonstrated very positive attitudes toward hospice. They had correct knowledge about some aspects of hospice, but were uncertain about correct answers on the ma

Hospice, palliative care, and care experiences among Medicare beneficiaries with cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Palliative care (PC), including hospice, can improve quality of life by helping manage distressing symptoms. PC is underutilized among people with cancer in the United States. We studied whether (1) sociodemographics and illness burden were associated with receipt of PC, and (2) whether PC use was related to self-reported care experiences. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)-Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) data, we analyzed illness burden (using the SEER-CAHPS Illness Burden Index [SCIBI]), race/ethnicit

Principles of wound care in hospice and palliative medicine.

The author presents a case report of an elderly patient who was extremely frail and debilitated. The patient was a resident of a skilled care facility because of advanced chronic illnesses that included end-stage Alzheimer, dementia, and Parkinson disease. This patient had acquired multiple stages III to IV pressure ulcers. Aggressive wound care treatment was initiated with partial success, but the patient passed away before the wound could completely heal. Medical literature was reviewed to offer the best possible wound care approach in providing care to patients who are terminally ill withou

Experience with a hospice-care program for the terminally ill.

A hospice-care program offers an opportunity to provide effective palliative care for patients terminally ill with malignant disease and to develop improved methods for coping with the problems of the dying patient. All patients for whom antitumor therapy does not offer a reasonable possibility of cure are eligible for Church Hospital's multidisciplinary program, the focus of which is on both the patient and his family. Acceptance by medical staff, patients and families has been enthusiastic. Both conventional and unconventional methods can be helpful in making terminally ill patients more com

End-of-Life and Hospice Care in Neurologic Diseases.

The care of a patient with neurologic disease at end-of-life requires expertise in addressing advance care planning, hospice, symptom management, and caregiver support. Neurologists caring for patients with advanced neurologic disease often identify changes in disease trajectory, functional status, or goals of care that prompt discussions of advance care planning and hospice. Patients nearing end-of-life may develop symptoms such as dyspnea, secretions, delirium, pain, and seizures. Neurologists may be the primary clinicians managing these symptoms, particularly in the hospitalized patient, th

[Home hospice care for the patients with gynecological malignancies].

In order to clarify the clinical characteristics along with the practical care of home hospice care for gynecological cancer patients, we analyzed 37 terminally-ill gynecological cancer patients who died at home from July 1, 2003 through June 30, 2010, and these patients were compared with 762 non-gynecology cancer patients. The range of patients' ages with gynecological malignancies was statistically younger(p<0. 05)than that of the control patients, whereas the duration of home care and home death ratio did not show significant differences. As for medical treatment, the frequency of the mana

[Development in the National Hospice Care Service in Korea].

The urgent needs to establish hospice care systems in Korea arise from the following reasons: (1) a drastic increase in chronically ill patients with the increase of aged population: (2) rapid changes in living environment from the traditional habitation (e.g., Many Koreans living in apartment complexes, which is the most popular form of modern residence in recent years, prefer to die in the hospital.): the overall increase in patients with advanced cancer: (4) recent trends in early discharge of terminally ill patients from the limited hospital facilities to accommodate other medical insuranc

Social Model Hospice: Providing Hospice and Palliative Care for a Homeless Population in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Health care for the homeless population is a complex challenge and represents a significant gap in care, particularly for those at the end of life. Hospice care may be desired but is rarely an option for people without residences, social support, and payment sources. Social model hospice is a unique paradigm of care delivery that offers a viable solution to make hospice and palliative care possible for this population. In this historical report from interviews with early organizers, prior and current leadership (n = 6), the evolution of The INN Between in Salt Lake City, Utah, is described. In

Trends in antipsychotic prescribing among long-term care residents receiving hospice care.

IMPORTANCE: The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' (CMS) National Partnership to Improve Dementia Care in Nursing Homes ("CMS National Partnership") focuses on reducing antipsychotic prescribing to long-term care residents. Hospice enrollment is not an exclusionary condition for the antipsychotic quality measure reported by CMS. It is unclear how prescribing in hospice may have been impacted by the initiative. OBJECTIVE: Estimate the association of the CMS National Partnership with trends in antipsychotic prescribing among long-term care residents in hospice. DESIGN: Interrupted time-

Hospice care in the Netherlands: who applies and who is admitted to inpatient care?

BACKGROUND: Ten percent of non-sudden deaths in the Netherlands occur in inpatient hospice facilities. To investigate differences between patients who are admitted to inpatient hospice care or not following application, how diagnoses compare to the national population, characteristics of application, and associations with being admitted to inpatient hospice care or not. METHODS: Data from a database representing over 25% of inpatient hospice facilities in the Netherlands were analysed. The study period spanned the years 2007-2012. Multivariate regression analyses were performed to study assoc

Emergency Palliative Care: Hospice Patients in the Emergency Department.

In this segment of the emergency department (ED) palliative care (PC) case series, we discuss a patient on hospice who presented to the ED for the management of acute symptoms and potential procedural intervention. Hospice patients frequently visit the ED and can challenge typical ED paradigms of care that often include resuscitative efforts and broad workups. Our patient had a history of advanced liver cancer, and his ED presentation was prompted by worsening abdominal pain from ascites requiring serial paracentesis. PC consultation was requested to help address the patient's symptoms and cre

Awareness of Hospice Care Among Community-Dwelling Elderly Participants.

Background and Purpose: The main goal of hospice care is to improve the quality of life for people who are at the end-of-life phase. However, investigations on the awareness of hospice care among community-dwelling elderly participants are limited. This work aimed to reveal the awareness status of hospice care and explore the factors influencing the awareness rate among elderly participants. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted among individuals aged 60 years and above. Results: A total of 4,969 individuals aged 60 years and above were randomly selected from 48 primary medical institu
