When hospitals build their own AI: a comparison of the EU and US regulatory framework.

Hospitals are increasingly shifting from being passive purchasers of artificial intelligence (AI) systems to active developers of medical AI, particularly in the form of in-hospital machine learning tools tailored to local clinical needs. This paper examines how the European Union (EU) and the USA regulate in-hospital-developed AI-based medical devices, focusing on the legal and institutional conditions that shape innovation, oversight and diffusion. Through a comparative analysis across three dimensions-responsiveness to clinical need, distribution of innovative capacity and pathways for scal

Adaptation of Fusarium oxysporum and Fusarium dimerum to the specific aquatic environment provided by the water systems of hospitals.

Members of the Fusarium group were recently detected in water distribution systems of several hospitals in the world. An epidemiological investigation was conducted over 2 years in hospital buildings in Dijon and Nancy (France) and in non-hospital buildings in Dijon. The fungi were detected only within the water distribution systems of the hospital buildings and also, but at very low concentrations, in the urban water network of Nancy. All fungi were identified as Fusarium oxysporum species complex (FOSC) and Fusarium dimerum species complex (FDSC) by sequencing part of the translation elongat

Legionellosis.

Legionella is a common cause of community- and hospital-acquired pneumonia. New information on the pathogenesis of infection and the host immune response is reviewed. Specialized laboratory tests, especially culture, are necessary for diagnosis since the clinical presentation is nonspecific. New antimicrobial agents and innovative approaches to disinfection of water distribution systems are presented.

Role of air distribution in SARS transmission during the largest nosocomial outbreak in Hong Kong.

UNLABELLED: Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is primarily transmitted by bio-aerosol droplets or direct personal contacts. This paper presents a detailed study of environmental evidence of possible airborne transmission in a hospital ward during the largest nosocomial SARS outbreak in Hong Kong in March 2003. Retrospective on-site inspections and measurements of the ventilation design and air distribution system were carried out on July 17, 2003. Limited on-site measurements of bio-aerosol dispersion were also carried out on July 22. Computational fluid dynamics simulations were perfor

Control of Legionella in hospitals.

Legionellas are present in water distribution systems and cooling towers of many hospitals. No firm data are available regarding the need for prophylactic disinfection of these contaminated systems. Disinfection of water systems and cooling towers is an accepted and effective means of ending nosocomial Legionnaires' disease, but it should be performed in conjunction with good epidemiological and microbiological studies to pinpoint environmental reservoirs and disseminators. Chlorination, pasteurization, or both, are the only means of disinfection found to be effective in disease outbreaks. Pro

Neurosyphilis Surveillance: Exploring the Use of Multiple Data Sources to Better Understand Morbidity in California.

Accurate reporting of neurosyphilis diagnoses is important to quantify and monitor severe outcomes associated with infection of Treponemal pallidum. This analysis compared the demographic distribution of neurosyphilis diagnoses in sexually transmitted disease surveillance data with administrative hospital data in the California Project Area from 2016 to 2018. Although neurosyphilis morbidity was similar, significant differences were noted by sex, age group, race/ethnicity, and region. Both sexually transmitted disease surveillance and administrative hospital data may be imperfect systems to un

Evaluating spatial surveillance: detection of known outbreaks in real data.

Since the anthrax attacks of October 2001 and the SARS outbreaks of recent years, there has been an increasing interest in developing surveillance systems to aid in the early detection of such illness. Systems have been established which do this is by monitoring primary health-care visits, pharmacy sales, absenteeism records, and other non-traditional sources of data. While many resources have been invested in establishing such systems, relatively little effort has as yet been expended in evaluating their performance. One way to evaluate a given surveillance system is to compare the signals it

Clusters of Healthcare-Associated Legionnaires' Disease in Two Hospitals of Central Greece.

Healthcare-associated Legionnaires' disease often leads to fatal respiratory tract infection among hospitalized patients. In this report, three cases of Legionnaires' disease among patients in two different hospitals (Hospital A and Hospital B) were investigated. After conducting an epidemiologic and environmental investigation, the water distribution systems (WDSs) were identified as the possible source of infection, as Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 (Lp1) was isolated from both clinical and environmental samples. Patients received aerosol therapy with nebulizers during their hospitalizat
