Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance among Intensive Care Units of a Tertiary Care Hospital in Southern India.

INTRODUCTION: Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs) are the rising threat in the health care facilities across the globe. As most Intesive Care Unit (ICU) patients are frequently on broad spectrum antimicrobials, this induces selective antibiotic pressure which leads to development of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) among the microorganisms of ICUs. AIM: To study the occurrence of different types of HAIs in patients admitted to various ICUs of JIPMER and the AMR pattern of the bacterial pathogens isolated from them. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The record based retrospective data of culture reports o

Molecular typing of Acinetobacter baumannii from ten different intensive care units of a university hospital.

Thirty-one isolates of Acinetobacter baumannii were collected from ten intensive care units of an Austrian university hospital. All isolates were typed by enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus polymerase chain reaction (ERIC-PCR). Two strains colonizing 13 infants in the neonatal intensive care unit were identified by ERIC-PCR. All other Acinetobacter baumannii isolates had highly divergent ERIC-PCR patterns, despite having the same antibiogram. Thus, a hospital-wide clonal distribution, as suggested by identical antibiogram patterns, was excluded by ERIC-PCR.

A hospital-based retrospective study of hospitalizations with hyalohyphomycosis and phaeohyphomycosis in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Hyalohyphomycosis and phaeohyphomycosis are mold infections associated with high mortality rates and diverse clinical presentations, but the epidemiology and outcomes are not well-understood in the United States. We examined hospitalizations associated with their causative fungi to inform potential public health and clinical interventions. METHODS: We identified hospitalizations with positive cultures for molds causing hyalohyphomycosis and phaeohyphomycosis using the 2019-2023 Premier Healthcare Database, selecting those in which the patient received at least one dose of a system

Trends of Hospitalizations and In-Hospital Outcomes for Traumatic Cardiac Injury in United States.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic cardiac injury (TCI) poses a significant risk of morbidity and mortality, yet there is a lack of population-based outcomes data for these patients. METHODS: The authors examined national yearly trends, demographics, and in-hospital outcomes of TCI using the National Inpatient Sample from 2007 to 2014. We focused on adult patients with a primary discharge diagnosis of TCI, categorizing them into blunt (BTCI) and penetrating (PTCI) cardiac injury. RESULTS: A total of 11,510 cases of TCI were identified, with 7,155 (62.2%) classified as BTCI and 4,355 (37.8%) as PTCI. BT

Hospital-level variation in hospitalization costs for spinal fusion in the United States.

BACKGROUND: With a growing emphasis on value of care, understanding factors associated with rising healthcare costs is increasingly important. In this national study, we evaluated the degree of center-level variation in the cost of spinal fusion. METHODS: All adults undergoing elective spinal fusion were identified in the 2016 to 2020 National Inpatient Sample. Multilevel mixed-effect models were used to rank hospitals based on risk-adjusted costs. The interclass coefficient (ICC) was utilized to tabulate the amount of variation attributable to hospital-level characteristics. The association

An Artificial Intelligence-Based Probabilistic Forecasting Model for Predicting Nursing Workforce Demand in Hospital Units.

Appropriate nurse staffing is a critical challenge for healthcare delivery institutions, that can affect the delivery of quality patient care. Reliable forecasting of nursing demand can optimize resource utilization and support preemptive hiring strategies; however, the use of advanced machine learning approaches to address this challenge has been limited thus far. We propose a probabilistic forecasting approach for predicting nursing workforce demand across multiple hospital units using DeepAR, an autoregressive recurrent neural network algorithm. We analyzed 5-year historical workforce data

Problems associated with the microbiological control of the breast milk from hospital milk bank units.

The microbiological tests on breast milk performed when samples of pasteurized breast milk are added to hospital milk banks are covered by French regulations dating from December 3rd 2007. They involve counts of the aerobic total flora and of Staphylococcus aureus in a sample of milk before pasteurization, and culture after pasteurization to check that the treated milk is sterile. The regulations specify the nature of the agar plates to be used, together with the conditions for plating and incubation, but they lack detail in other areas. We developed a quality assurance system, modified our pr

Trends in bacteraemia on the haematology and oncology units of a UK tertiary referral hospital.

As part of ongoing surveillance of infection in the haematology and oncology units at Belfast City Hospital, microbiologically documented bloodstream infections over three 12-month periods 1994/5, 1998/9 and 1999/00 were reviewed. Gram-positive organisms were the most common cause of blood stream infection in the haematology unit causing 66%, 56% and 64% of episodes of monomicrobial bacteraemia in 1994/5, 1998/9 and 1999/00, respectively. In haematology patients, enterococci have emerged as an important cause of bacteraemia, with increasing levels of glycopeptide resistance, and the 'non-ferme

Children hospitalized for juvenile arthritis in the United States.

Juvenile arthritis (JA) is an autoimmune condition affecting children. We used the 2017 National Inpatient Sample (NIS) to evaluate the impact of JA in the United States. The admission data were converted to weighted form and patients between the ages of 0 and 18 (inclusive) were used in our study. 560 weighted cases were found in 2017. It was more common in females than males (340 females, 220 males), Whites (235 cases), and Medicaid covered 61.6% of all patients with JA (345 cases). The total hospital charges were $25,147,389 while the mean length of stay (LOS) was 4.55 days. The highest num
