Impact of animal-assisted intervention on therapy engagement in hospitalized children with traumatic brain injuries.

BACKGROUND: Individuals who sustained traumatic brain injuries in childhood may experience global challenges including disorders of consciousness, motor dysfunctions, and sensory impairments. Occupational and physical therapy are important parts of recovery from an acute brain injury, addressing deficits that directly affect functional recovery and return to age-appropriate activities of daily living. Difficulty with active engagement in therapy tasks can limit the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions. Therapists search for methods to increase patient engagement to bolster patient progre

Characterization of multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli isolates from animals presenting at a university veterinary hospital.

In this study, we examined molecular mechanisms associated with multidrug resistance (MDR) in a collection of Escherichia coli isolates recovered from hospitalized animals in Ireland. PCR and DNA sequencing were used to identify genes associated with resistance. Class 1 integrons were prevalent (94.6%) and contained gene cassettes recognized previously and implicated mainly in resistance to aminoglycosides, β-lactams, and trimethoprim (aadA1, dfrA1-aadA1, dfrA17-aadA5, dfrA12-orfF-aadA2, bla(OXA-30)-aadA1, aacC1-orf1-orf2-aadA1, dfr7). Class 2 integrons (13.5%) contained the dfrA1-sat1-aadA1 g

Reduced rates of antimicrobial resistance in Staphylococcus intermedius group and Escherichia coli isolated from diseased companion animals in an animal hospital after restriction of antimicrobial use.

The 2016 National Action Plan aims for reduction in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) to tetracyclines, third-generation cephalosporins, and fluoroquinolones in Escherichia coli isolates from livestock: to lower the tetracycline resistance of E. coli to 33% or less; to maintain the third-generation cephalosporin resistance of E. coli at the same level as in the other G7 countries as of 2020; and to maintain the fluoroquinolone resistance of E. coli at the same level as in the other G7 countries as of 2020. A relatively unexplored facet of reducing AMR is the impact of minimizing transmission of A

Impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on antimicrobial use in companion animals in an academic veterinary hospital in North Carolina.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in bacterial pathogens reduces the effectiveness of these drugs in both human and veterinary medicine, making judicious antimicrobial use (AMU) an important strategy for its control. The COVID-19 pandemic modified operations in both human and veterinary healthcare delivery, potentially impacting AMU. The goal of this research is to quantify how antimicrobial drug prescribing practices for companion animals in an academic veterinary hospital changed during the pandemic. A retrospective study was performed using prescribing data for dogs and cats collected from the

A trend analysis of animal bite cases attending a Tertiary Care Hospital, Odisha during COVID lockdown.

A nationwide lockdown was imposed from March 25, 2020, to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. The study aimed to analyze the trend, pattern of animal bite cases and to quantify the reduction in the incidence of animal bite cases due to diminution of exposure time with animals as a result of lockdown. The interrupted time series method was used to evaluate the effect of lockdown on the incidence of animal bite cases. Right after the lockdown, the mean number of reported animal bite cases decreased significantly (P = 0.04) by 8.3%. Furthermore, the month-to-month change of cases for the po

Over a 10-y period, patients hospitalized with Pasteurella-induced cat or dog bite-associated wound infection were analysed retrospectively with regard to preceding antibiotic medication. In 10/14 cases, hospitalization was necessitated in spite of prophylactic or therapeutic administration of oral antibiotics. In 1 case, phenoxymethylpenicillin and flucloxacillin had been prescribed. The other patients received flucloxacillin (7 patients), erythromycin, or cefadroxil (1 patient each), agents that are not consistently active against Pasteurella. In conclusion, hospitalization due to Pasteurell

Epidemiological profile and management practices of animal bite cases in a tertiary care hospital of Haryana: A cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Rabies is one of the oldest and deadliest diseases known to man. After the clinical occurrence of rabies, there is no comprehensive treatment possible. However, the development of rabies can be prevented to a large extent if animal bites are managed appropriately and in time. The post-exposure treatment of animal bite cases is of prime importance in this regard. India has the highest burden of animal bite and rabies cases in the world. This imposes a substantial burden on the healthcare delivery services of the country. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study con

A Clinical Investigation on Serum Amyloid A Concentration in Client-Owned Healthy and Diseased Cats in a Primary Care Animal Hospital.

Although measurement of serum amyloid A (SAA) concentration in client-owned cats has already been shown to be clinically useful, limited data are available on common diseases at primary care hospitals. In this study, we measured the SAA concentration in cats with various diseases and investigated their clinical significance using a primary care hospital as a population. We measured the SAA concentrations in healthy cats (n = 98) and those with various clinical signs (n = 444). The SAA concentrations in healthy cats did not differ significantly by age, breed, sex, and presence/absence of neuter
