BACKGROUND: Malaria is the most frequent tropical disease and the most important parasitic infectious disease in the world. Due to high mobility by travelling and migration also in Central Europe malaria has to be considered also in children and youths.
METHODS: We report four cases of malaria being diagnosed and treated at the department of paediatrics, Vienna Danube Hospital, a municipal centre.
RESULTS: In all cases the latency time or incubation period respectively was long with up to one year which made the diagnosis of malaria unlikely at first glance.

Non-endemic Salmonella bacteremia tends to occur in patients with chronic disease. We reviewed all cases of Salmonella infection documented in adults at Bellevue Hospital during the years 1975-1982. Unexpectedly, the most frequent underlying disease found among bacteremic patients was systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Patients with SLE accounted for 6 of 30 Salmonella bacteremias as compared with 13 of 2,388 non-Salmonella gram-negative bacteremias. OBJECTIVE: To examine the predictors of adverse birth outcomes (ABOs) among pregnant women attending antenatal clinics at the Kintampo Municipal Hospital (KMH) in Ghana.
METHOD: A case-control study was conducted to enrol 408 pregnant women attending antenatal clinic at KMH into the study. Structured questionnaire was used to elicit information from the respondents. A retrospective, descriptive and exploratory study on the frequency of tuberculosis diagnosis in patients from 4 municipalities of the City of Havana was undertaken. Of a total number of 195 TB-suspected cases, 25 showed enough evidence recorded in their medical histories and 10 of them were finally diagnosed with tuberculosis: 5 BAAR(+) and 5 BAAR(-).
