Reasons for performing a caesarean section in public hospitals in rural Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: It is estimated that 18.5 million Caesarean Sections (CS) are conducted annually worldwide and about one-third of them are done without medical indications and described as "unnecessary". Although developed countries account for most of the rise in the trend of unnecessary CS, more studies report a similar trend in developing countries, putting a strain on existing but limited healthcare resources, jeopardizing families' financial security and presenting a barrier to equitable universal coverage. We examined indications for CS in public hospitals of one district in Bangladesh and e

Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases in enterobacteriaceae in Buenos Aires, Argentina, public hospitals.

Resistance to extended-spectrum cephalosporins is often associated with plasmid encoded extended spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL). In order to evaluate the prevalence and diversity of ESBLs in enterobacteria in our city, a 1-month-period survey was carried out from April to May 2000. Extended-spectrum-cephalosporin-resistant strains, isolated from inpatient clinical specimens other than stools, were collected among 17 participating hospitals. From a total of 427 enterobacterial strains that were collected during this period, 39 were extended-spectrum cephalosporin resistant. The National Commit

[The creation of 2 hospitals in Santiago thanks to a public collection: the Salvador and San Vicente de Paul Hospitals].

Shortage of hospital beds was critical in Santiago around 1871. Infant mortality and smallpox were serious problems. A public collection of funds was allowed by the Government to help solve the problem. Returns were so generous that 2 hospitals, Salvador and San Vicente de Paul, were built with the funds.

Performance and challenges of success in quality improvement projects of selected public hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: A MUSIQ analysis of a perinatal quality improvement collaborative in Ethiopian public hospitals.

BACKGROUND: Quality improvement collaboratives (QICs) are a common strategy to improve healthcare in low-resource settings. However, their success is highly variable. The Model for Understanding Success in Quality (MUSIQ) posits that contextual factors at multiple levels determine outcomes. We used MUSIQ to investigate why a well-supported perinatal QIC in Ethiopia had mixed results, testing the hypothesis that internal organisational factors rather than external support would be the primary differentiator of success. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with all quality improvement

MRI Waiting Time Disparities in Saudi Public Hospitals: A Six-Year Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Timely access to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is essential for accurate diagnosis and effective patient management. Prolonged waiting times can compromise care quality and may signal inefficiencies or inequities within imaging services. Evidence on MRI waiting time patterns in Saudi Arabia's public healthcare system remains limited. This study aimed to quantify MRI waiting times and compare differences across urgency categories, patient demographics, and referring specialties in two Saudi Ministry of Health hospitals. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using R

Newborn screening for external congenital anomalies at three public hospitals in Karachi, Pakistan.

INTRODUCTION: Reliable prevalence data on congenital anomalies are lacking in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), including Pakistan. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of external congenital anomalies through systematic newborn screening (NBS) in public sector hospitals in Karachi, Pakistan. METHODS: A cross-sectional NBS programme was implemented from July 2023 to June 2024. Health workers (HWs) conducted head-to-toe newborn examinations, documented anomalies and provided counselling and referral guidance. Point-prevalence survey of antibiotic use at three public referral hospitals in Kenya.

Antimicrobial stewardship encourages appropriate antibiotic use, the specific activities of which will vary by institutional context. We investigated regional variation in antibiotic use by surveying three regional public hospitals in Kenya. Hospital-level data for antimicrobial stewardship activities, infection prevention and control, and laboratory diagnostic capacities were collected from hospital administrators, heads of infection prevention and control units, and laboratory directors, respectively. Patient-level antibiotic use data were abstracted from medical records using a modified Wor

Undiagnosed comorbidities among individuals hospitalised with COVID-19 in South African public hospitals.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported comorbid disease, including hypertension, diabetes mellitus, chronic cardiac and renal disease, malignancy, HIV, tuberculosis (TB) and obesity, to be associated with COVID‑19 mortality. National demographic surveys have reported a high proportion of undiagnosed and untreated comorbid disease in South Africa (SA). OBJECTIVES: To determine the number of individuals with previously undiagnosed HIV, TB and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among patients hospitalised with COVID‑19, and the level of medical control of these chronic diseases. Public health experts urge U.S. hospitals to be prepared as Ebola outbreak accelerates.

With the outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EBD) accelerating in West Africa, public health authorities are urging frontline providers in the United States to be vigilant in questioning patients who present with a suspected infectious disease, and in adhering to infection control practices. Recent travel to West Africa and contact with others who may have been exposed to EVD are key points that need to be covered at triage, say experts. The World Health Organization (WHO) indicates that mortality from the latest outbreak is 55%, although it is as high as 75% in Guinea. Health care workers are pa

State mental hospitals and their host communities: the origins of hostile public reactions.

This article examines the hostile public reactions of a community that, through a state policy to consolidate all long-term behavioral health services, was to become the site of the state's only mental hospital. A telephone survey conducted in the host community (n = 800) and a matched community (n = 800) was used to test whether the origins of hostility toward consolidation were related to the public's negative attitudes toward mental illness and homelessness or to the beliefs about the discharge and supervisory behavior of the hospital. The host community was not found to have more negative

Lead Times of Optometry Services in Selected Public Hospitals in Rural South Africa.

PURPOSE: Efficient service delivery remains a critical benchmark of public sector performance, with lead and waiting times serving as essential indicators of responsiveness and accessibility. Long waiting times not only diminish user satisfaction but can also exacerbate inequalities in access, particularly in resource-constrained contexts. This study investigated the lead times of optometry services in selected hospitals in rural South Africa. By evaluating lead and waiting times and identifying contributing factors, the research further aimed to inform strategies for improving service deliver

Evaluating administrative service quality in public hospitals: a SERVPERF-based study in Portugal.

PURPOSE: Administrative services constitute the first point of contact for hospital users and play a critical role in shaping perceptions of service quality. However, quality assessments in health-care have largely prioritised clinical indicators, leaving administrative functions underexamined. This study addresses this gap by analysing user perceptions of administrative service quality in a Portuguese public hospital, aiming to identify strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for improvement. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: A quantitative observational study was conducted across four administra
