Studies of nosocomial bloodstream infection (NBI) have come primarily from university, municipal or community hospitals with little specific information from veterans hospitals. The objective of this study was to define trends in NBI at a tertiary care veterans hospital. Patients with NBI were identified by retrospective review of microbiology records and of infection control surveillance records from 1979 to 1987 at the Buffalo Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC). BACKGROUND: Telemedicine is a rapidly growing tool since its invention in the 1950s. Recently, it has expanded to the field of plastic surgery. In the Connecticut VA System, there is 1 plastic surgeon at a central location for the state of Connecticut and southern Massachusetts. Our aim was to pilot a telehealth program for plastic surgery consultation within the VA to improve access to subspecialty care. BACKGROUND: This study was made to evaluate the experience at a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) hospital with consecutive major lower extremity amputations over a period of 7 years.
METHODS: The records of 229 patients (221 male and 8 female) who underwent 296 consecutive major lower extremity amputations (119 above-knee amputations [AKA] and 177 below-knee amputations [BKA]) over a period of 86 months (September 1994 to October 2001) were retrospectively analyzed. Efforts are underway to understand recent increases in emergency department (ED) use and to offer case management to those patients identified as high utilizers. Homeless Veterans are thought to use EDs for non-emergent conditions. This report concerns 34 patients of ulcerative colitis admitted to Taichung Veterans General Hospital, from 1983 to 1994. Among them 26 were male and 8 were female. The age at onset were mostly from 50 to 60. The average duration between onset of symptoms and the date of definite diagnosis was 10 months.
