The spread of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales (ESBL-E) in communities has been facilitated by direct contact with humans or animal carriers and insects such as houseflies. Houseflies may have an increased risk of human exposure to antimicrobial-resistant pathogens, including ESBL-E. In this study, we determined the presence of ESBL-E in houseflies and ready-to-eat food samples from selected food vending sites in five health care facilities in Greater Accra, Ghana. Sixty (60) food vending sites were included in this study. Flies (10) were pooled, and food (5 g) was m

The abuse of toxic organic solvents has caused great harm to human health and the environment. Therefore, developing an environmentally friendly nano-based pesticide formulation without using harmful solvents is urgent to improve the efficacy of pesticides and minimize environmental and health risks. Herein, by combining aspartic acid (Asp) with spinosad (SSD) as an attractive building unit, a self-assembly and carrier-minimized strategy was applied to construct a nanobiopesticide (Asp-SSD) simultaneously. To further improve the storage stability of the formulation, the biogenic surfactant alk

Diarrhea is one of the most common diseases and is a leading cause of death in developing countries. This is often caused by contaminated food. Poor food hygiene standards are exacerbated by the presence of flies which can transmit a variety of infectious microorganisms, particularly through animal source foods. This fact becomes especially important in developing countries like Zambia, where fish is a highly valued source of protein. Our interest in this study was to identify if the flies that beset food markets in Zambia carry important pathogenic bacteria on their bodies, and subsequently i

The housefly, Musca domestica, is a cosmopolitan pest of livestock and poultry and is of economic, veterinary, and public health importance. Populations of M. domestica are naturally infected with M. domestica salivary gland hypertrophy virus (MdSGHV), a nonoccluded double-stranded DNA virus that inhibits egg production in infected females and is characterized by salivary gland hypertrophy (SGH) symptoms. MdSGHV has been detected in housefly samples from North America, Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, and the southwestern Pacific. In this study, houseflies were collected from various locations and

The bioaccumulation of total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) by housefly maggots (HM) during the conversion of food waste (vegetables and meat (VM) and rice waste) under various waste feed ratios were investigated. Subsequently, Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) were fed with the commercial feed, commercial dried HM, dried HM, and fresh HM, followed by a human health risk assessment of Hg via fish consumption. The THg concentrations of HM fed with food waste ranged from 39.5 to 100 μg kg-1 ww. Concentrations of MeHg in the maggots fed with 100 % vegetables and meat (VM) waste (13.7 ±

Background: Pigs and cattle have been implicated as reservoirs of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) that can spread to humans, and houseflies are considered potential carriers of bacteria with ARGs that could contribute to their spread to the environment, including food, animals, and humans. Methods: In this study, 107, 145, and 127 Escherichia coli strains were isolated from houseflies, pigs, and cattle, respectively, from a slaughterhouse in Lima, Peru. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed using the Kirby-Bauer method, where thirteen antibiotics were used. Strains were also

Background: High frequency of Helicobacter pylori infection and the unknown mode of transmission prompted us to investigate H. pylori-wild housefly relationship. H. pylori causes chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers, and stomach cancer. H. pylori persists in the gut of the experimentally infected houseflies. The existence of H. pylori strains isolated from wild houseflies, on the other hand, has never been documented. Materials and Methods: In this study, 902 wild houseflies from different sites were identified as Musca domestica, then 60 flies were screened by traditional microbiological techniqu

Pesticides have been extensively applied worldwide to protect crops from worms and insects; however, the continuous use of pesticides affects ecosystems, agricultural product safety, nontarget organisms, and human health. In this paper, we report a highly sensitive biosensor for the determination of pesticides based on tin sulfide (SnS2) and chitosan (CHIT) nanocomposites decorated with a unique British housefly acetylcholinesterase (AChE). The hydrothermally synthesized nano-SnS2 mixed with chitosan solution (CHIT-SnS2) was drop-casted onto a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). Subsequently, the B

We report a case of pseudomyiasis (accidental myiasis) in a 52-year-old man who had previously undergone surgery and placement of a tracheostomy tube for laryngeal cancer. The patient presented to our outpatient department with a foul-smelling, blood-stained discharge and frequent and severe episodic pain at the site of the tracheostomy. He also reported the discharge of many whitish larvae from the site. On clinical examination, 3 of these larvae were removed from the tracheostomy wound and later identified as Musca domestica (housefly) larvae. The patient underwent further mechanical removal

BACKGROUND: Shigella infections are a public health problem in developing and transitional countries because of high transmissibility, severity of clinical disease, widespread antibiotic resistance and lack of a licensed vaccine. Whereas Shigellae are known to be transmitted primarily by direct fecal-oral contact and less commonly by contaminated food and water, the role of the housefly Musca domestica as a mechanical vector of transmission is less appreciated. We sought to assess the contribution of houseflies to Shigella-associated moderate-to-severe diarrhea (MSD) among children less than f

In the common housefly, the presence or absence of a male-determining factor, M, is responsible for sex determination. In different strains, M has been found on the Y, on the X, or on any of the five autosomes. By analyzing a Y-autosomal translocation and a ring-shaped, truncated Y chromosome, we could show that M on the Y consists of at least two regions with M activity: One of them can be assigned to the short arm of the Y chromosome (MYS), which is largely C-banding negative, the other region lies on the C-banding positive long arm of the Y, including the centromeric part (MYL). Each region

Blastocystis a single-celled eukaryotic protist, is known to inhabit the intestines of various hosts, including humans, and has been implicated in a wide spectrum of symptoms, ranging from gastrointestinal issues to skin disorders, thereby establishing its status as an emerging infectious agent. In this study, the prevalence of Blastocystis infection was investigated in insects, including cockroaches, houseflies, and crickets, as well as sea turtles. Additionally, the genotypic characteristics of the isolated Blastocystis strains were examined, and the evolutionary relationships between Blasto

This study assessed the integration of housefly larva bioconversion with aerobic composting for chicken manure (MC) over a 45-day period (4 days of larval bioconversion + 41 days of aerobic composting) and compared it with direct composting (CK1) and sawdust-amended composting (CK2). Larval activity enhanced moisture reduction and substrate porosity, yielding 6.08% (w/w) maggot protein and reducing nutrient losses of C, N, P, and K by 13.45%, 35.08%, 62.15%, and 70.89%, respectively, relative to CK2. MC treatment accelerated humification, as evidenced by increased aromatic and humic acid conte

Animal waste from concentrated swine farms is widely considered to be a source of environmental pollution, and the introduction of veterinary antibiotics in animal manure to ecosystems is rapidly becoming a major public health concern. A housefly larvae (Musca domestica) vermireactor has been increasingly adopted for swine manure value-added bioconversion and pollution control, but few studies have investigated its efficiency on antibiotic attenuation during manure vermicomposting. In this study we explored the capacity and related attenuation mechanisms of antibiotic degradation and its linka

The purpose of this study was to determine whether superoxide dismutase/catalase mimetics lengthen the life span of the housefly, Musca domestica, as previously demonstrated for the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Various concentrations of Eukarion-8 or Eukarion-134 were administered via the drinking water and the effects on the life span of the flies and amounts of protein carbonyls were determined under normoxic and hyperoxic conditions. These SOD/catalase mimetics neither extended the life span of the flies nor attenuated the protein carbonyl content under normoxic conditions and shortened

Flies have the capacity to transfer pathogens between different environments, acting as one of the most important vectors of human diseases worldwide. In this study, we trapped flies on a university campus and tested them for mobile resistance genes against colistin, a last-resort antibiotic in human medicine for treating clinical infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. Quantitative PCR assays we developed showed that 34.1% of Musca domestica (86/252) and 51.1% of Protophormia terraenovae (23/45) isolates were positive for the mcr-1 gene, 1.2% of M. domestica (3/252) a
