BACKGROUND: The rate of hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatment initiation and cure is suboptimal among people experiencing homelessness. A recent randomized controlled trial conducted by our study team compared peer-assisted telemedicine for HCV (TeleHCV) to peer-assisted referral to local providers (enhanced usual care [EUC]) in a rural population in Oregon. We hypothesized that the TeleHCV treatment model is more effective than EUC among those with unstable housing.
METHODS: In this secondary analysis of the Oregon TeleHCV randomized controlled trial in adults with HCV and injection drug use (n

Housing instability, generally, is associated with a lack of access to care. The present study explores healthcare mobility among Veterans experiencing housing instability to identify the magnitude of this phenomenon and whether it is associated with certain patient characteristics or needs. The sample included 486,675 Veterans with 4 or more healthcare visits during the year following identification of homelessness. Analyses compared (a) baseline characteristics of Veterans who did and did not experience high healthcare mobility (i.e., receipt of healthcare services at 4 or more U.S. Departme

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate recent national trends in childhood housing instability, overall and across sociodemographic subgroups.
METHODS: We conducted a serial cross-sectional analysis of children aged 0-17 years using the 2022-2024 National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH). Our primary outcome was housing instability, a NSCH-defined composite of caregiver-reported inability to pay rent or mortgage on time in the past 12 months, lifetime experience of homelessness or living in a shelter, and frequent residential mobility in the past 12 months. We conducted survey-weighted regression models wi

BACKGROUND: In this article, we apply a gender-based analysis plus framework to research the housing experiences of older, low-income adults living and aging in Hamilton. Low-income older adults with intersectional identities are at risk of not aging in place due to marginalization and housing instability.
OBJECTIVE: Policy currently homogenizes the experience of aging by sidelining intersectional factors that have a bearing on aging well in place. The research aims to develop policy recommendations to address this gap.
METHODS: Several methods captured the housing experiences of low-income

BACKGROUND: The experience of homelessness has been linked with developing poor health outcomes. Little is known about the risk of recurrent stroke among these individuals. This study investigated the correlates of developing recurrent stroke and subsequent mortality among Veterans with housing instability.
METHODS: Using a national sample of Veterans from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs who had an indicator of housing instability between 2014-2018 (n=659,987), we identified 15,566 Veterans who experienced incident stroke. We compared characteristics of Veterans who experienced incide

Stimulant use among unstably housed individuals is associated with increased risks of psychiatric co-morbidity, violence, HIV transmission, and overdose. Due to a lack of highly effective treatments, evidence-based policies targeting the prevention of stimulant use disorder are of critical importance. However, little empirical evidence exists on risks associated with initiating or returning to stimulant use among at-risk populations. In a longitudinal cohort of unstably housed women in San Francisco (2016-2019), self-reported data on stimulant use, housing status, and mental health were collec

Compared with housed people, those experiencing homelessness have longer and more expensive inpatient stays as well as more frequent emergency department visits. Efforts to provide stable housing situations for people experiencing homelessness could reduce health care costs. Through the Supportive Services for Veteran Families program, the Department of Veterans Affairs partners with community organizations to provide temporary financial assistance to veterans who are currently homeless or at imminent risk of becoming homeless. We examined the impact of temporary financial assistance on health

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Children with special health care needs (SHCNs) have significant medical and educational expenses affecting household finances. Housing instability can be detrimental to family well-being. Our objective was to evaluate housing instability in households of children with and without SHCNs.
METHODS: Cross-sectional surveys (2013-2017) in English and Spanish of caregivers with children <4 years old were conducted at 5 hospitals. The children with SHCN screener and caregiver report of child Supplemental Security Income (SSI) receipt were used to categorize children into t

Women veterans in the United States face a disproportionate risk of housing instability (HI) and interpersonal violence (IV), largely perpetrated by intimate partners or involving nonpartner sexual violence, compared to both male veterans and nonveteran women. To explore the ways in which IV and HI intersect in the experiences of women veterans, we analyzed transcripts of in-depth qualitative interviews with 20 women veterans who had screened positive for HI at a Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Three broad themes emerged related to the intersection of IV (specifically intimate partner violenc

The recession of the late 2000s has increased interest in the consequences of housing instability. Previous research has shown poorer health among those experiencing housing instability, but extant studies generally have focused on selected populations (e.g., homeowners or renters) or studied only one type of housing instability (e.g. homelessness). Using new data from the Michigan Recession and Recovery Study, a population-based sample of working-aged adults from Southeastern Michigan, U.S.A., in late 2009-early 2010, we found that about one-third of respondents recently experienced some type

The number of people experiencing homelessness (PEH) in the United States has increased in the past 5 years. PEH have a higher disease burden and early mortality compared to people who are housed. Stigma adds to the burden of disease and disease management for PEH. In this article the authors review stigma, define housing and homelessness, describe the health and health care disparities PEH experience, and using the socio-ecological model as a framework, offer opportunities for nurses to intervene in efforts to decrease the stigma that PEH and housing instability encounter to improve health ou

INTRODUCTION: Housing instability increases chronic pain risk and creates care barriers, making emergency departments the primary points of health care for people experiencing housing instability. Although it is clear that housing instability contributes to chronic pain, the patient's experience of pain is less understood. This study examines differences in pain characteristics by housing status.
METHODS: This secondary analysis used data from the Decision-Making Factors for Therapeutic Opioid Use after Emergency Care. In the original study, randomly selected eligible participants self-report

Poor health and unstable housing are closely linked. Most research has focused on how housing shapes health, with little empirical study of whether and how health events can lead to future residential mobility or housing instability. This paper uses high-frequency administrative data on residential location and health among Medicaid enrollees in New York City to test whether adverse health events trigger housing mobility or insecurity, independent of the financial toll of medical bills. Using an event study design, I find that health shocks - or, sudden hospitalizations after two hospital-free

Housing instability is a critical social determinant of health (SDOH). Prior studies of homelessness and congestive heart failure (CHF) have looked primarily at the association between socioeconomic status and hospitalization. The association between housing instability and the development of CHF has not been fully investigated. We examined data from 4,408 participants with annual household income below $50,000 in the All of Us Research Program, a national cohort study enriched for individuals underrepresented in biomedical research. Within the inceptive survey, participants were asked if they

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV)-related cancer is highly preventable through HPV vaccination and cancer screening, but people experiencing homelessness or housing instability (PEH) may not engage in these behaviors due to conflicting priorities. This systematic review synthesized and estimated HPV-related cancer prevention behaviors among PEH.
METHODS: Using PRISMA guidelines, articles published before 2023 were located via PubMed, Ovid/Medline, CINAHL, and Embase. Full-text, peer-reviewed studies that measured HPV-related cancer prevention in any sample of people experiencing homeless

BACKGROUND: The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) has a long history of addressing social determinants of health, including housing. In 2012, the VA integrated a two-question Homelessness Screening Clinical Reminder (HSCR) into the electronic medical record in outpatient clinics to identify Veterans experiencing housing instability and ensure referral to appropriate services.
OBJECTIVE: This study explores perspectives of VA clinical providers regarding administration of the HSCR, their role in addressing housing status, and how a patient's housing status impacts clinical decision-making.

BACKGROUND: Youth experiencing homelessness have disproportionate contact with the criminal legal system. This system contact represents a critical inflection point for enhancing risk or opportunities for stabilization; however, the policy and scholarly traditions examining the criminal legal system have not traditionally incorporated housing or other social determinants as a central focus of intervention.
METHODS: We conducted a scoping review using PRISMA-ScR guidelines to examine how the research literature is currently addressing housing within the context of youth involvement in the lega

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth is a leading cause of neonatal death and long-term health issues. Both environmental and social stressors, such as heat exposure and housing stability, may contribute to adverse birth outcomes, yet their joint effects are not well studied, especially in the Korean context. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the independent and joint associations of ambient temperature and housing instability with preterm birth. METHODS: This study analyzed eight years (2015–2022) of birth outcomes among women, derived from nationwide, register-based census data covering 100% of the po

INTRODUCTION: The relationship between housing instability and e-cigarette and traditional tobacco use, particularly for sexual minority students, has received little attention. This study investigates the association between housing instability, e-cigarettes, and traditional tobacco use in sexual minorities and heterosexual adolescents.
METHODS: We used 2021 and 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey data (n = 23 834). Multivariable logistic regression analyses examined associations of housing instability, sexual identity, and e-cigarette and traditional tobacco use. Using various combinations of s

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether housing instability-inclusive of eviction, homelessness, moving in with others, moving for cost reasons, or frequent moves-is associated with mental health among renters in the aftermath of the Great Recession of 2007-09.
STUDY DESIGN: A panel survey study.
METHODS: We used data from the Michigan Recession and Recovery Study (2009-10, 2011 and 2013), a population-representative sample of working-aged adults, and logistic regression with propensity score weights to examine the association between housing instability over a year and a half and anxiety attack or de
