Distribution of human papillomavirus genotypes in western China and their association with cervical cancer and precancerous lesions.

The aim of this study was to describe the distribution of human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes among cervical cancers and pre-cancers in Shaanxi province of western China. A total of 17,341 women who were screened for cervical cancer from January 2014 to December 2016, using HPV genotyping and ThinPrep cytologic test were included. The prevalence and attribution of HPV genotypes were stratified by cervical lesion and age group. Of the subjects, 26.3% were infected with HPV, 28.0% of whom had multiple infections. The crude HPV prevalence increased from atypical squamous cells of undetermined si

Validation of a DNA methylation HPV triage classifier in a screening sample.

High-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) DNA tests have excellent sensitivity for detection of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia 2 or higher (CIN2+). A drawback of hrHPV screening, however, is modest specificity. Therefore, hrHPV-positive women might need triage to reduce adverse events and costs associated with unnecessary colposcopy. We compared the performance of HPV16/18 genotyping with a predefined DNA methylation triage test (S5) based on target regions of the human gene EPB41L3, and viral late gene regions of HPV16, HPV18, HPV31 and HPV33. Assays were run using exfoliated cervical specim

Human papillomavirus in prostatic cancer: no evidence found by in situ DNA hybridization.

Human papillomavirus has been associated with benign squamous tumors, intraepithelial neoplasia, and invasive squamous cancer. The role of human papillomavirus as the most likely precursor of cervical dysplasia is well studied. We know of no available information as to the possible role of human papillomavirus in prostatic hyperplasia and cancer. We studied formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues of 20 cases of glandular hyperplasia and 20 cases of prostatic cancer by in situ DNA hybridization for human papillomavirus using commercially available biotinylated DNA probes detected by an avidin-

Endocervical adenocarcinoma in situ presenting in fundal endometrial polyp: the mother of all skip lesions.

A 38-yr-old woman, with a previous history of low grade squamous intraepithelial lesion in the cervix, presented with heavy menstrual bleeding. At hysteroscopy, a fundal polyp was removed from the right cornu which displayed many glands lined by atypical, mitotically active epithelium with features characteristic of endocervical adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS) of intestinal subtype. Subsequent cervical liquid-based cytology and colposcopically directed biopsies revealed no causative lesion, but residual PreservCyt from the ThinPrep vial tested positive for high risk HPV type other than HPV 16 and

Serum Immune Profiling for Early Detection of Cervical Disease.

BACKGROUND: The most recent (2012) worldwide estimates from International Agency for Research on Cancer indicate that approximately 528,000 new cases and 270,000 deaths per year are attributed to cervical cancer worldwide. The disease is preventable with HPV vaccination and with early detection and treatment of pre-invasive cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, CIN. Antibodies (Abs) to HPV proteins are under investigation as potential biomarkers for early detection. METHODS: To detect circulating HPV-specific IgG Abs, we developed programmable protein arrays (NAPPA) that display the proteomes o

Prevalence and Type Distribution of Human Papillomavirus Recovered from the Uterine Cervix of Nigerian Women: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: Infection with an oncogenic type of human papillomavirus is a prerequisite for the development of precancerous cervical lesions and its subsequent progression to cervical cancer. With an alarming increase in the detection of other suspicious papillomavirus genotypes in both healthy and women with cervical lesions, there is a need for comprehensive data on cervical papillomavirus infection to address cervical cancer and other associated disease burden, especially in Sub-Sarahan Africa, where the bulk of the problem exists. The present study was conducted to develop comprehensive dat

Human papillomavirus typing of penile condyloma.

Infection with human papillomavirus has been identified as a significant risk factor for the development of cervical neoplasia. Knowledge of the characteristics of infecting human papillomavirus in male patients is lacking. We studied 37 men who presented with genital condyloma to identify the clinical appearance of the lesion, histological features and human papillomavirus type as determined by deoxyribonucleic acid molecular hybridization analysis. Of the patients 32 had penile shaft condyloma: 23 noticed the lesion themselves and 9 presented because the partner had condyloma. An adequate am

Human papillomavirus prevalence in invasive penile cancer and association with clinical outcome.

PURPOSE: The incidence of penile cancer is increasing, and is suggested to be explained by changes in sexual practice and increased exposure of men to sexually transmitted high risk human papillomavirus infection. In penile cancers from a Dutch population treated in 1963 to 2001 we found a high risk human papillomavirus prevalence of about 30%. In this study we assessed the prevalence of high risk human papillomavirus-DNA in a more recent, contemporary penile cancer cohort and its association with patient survival. MATERIALS AND METHODS: High risk human papillomavirus-DNA presence was assesse
