Herpesvirus Diversity in Stranded Mysticetes of Brazil, Southwestern Atlantic.

Emerging and re-emerging pathogens have been increasingly investigated in cetaceans worldwide, particularly in odontocetes, whereas infectious diseases in mysticetes remain poorly understood. This study surveyed herpesvirus in 51 baleen whales stranded along the Brazilian coast, between 2008 and 2022: humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae, n = 46), Bryde's whales (Balaenoptera brydei, n = 3), a southern right whale (Eubalaena australis, n = 1), and a common minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata, n = 1). A total of 159 tissue samples were analyzed using nested PCR assays targeting the herpe

Anatomy and Functional Morphology of the Mysticete Rorqual Whale Larynx: Phonation Positions of the U-Fold.

Many Mysticetes (baleen whales) are acoustically active marine mammals. This is epitomized by rorquals, and specifically male humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) whose complex songs comprise a wide range of vocalizations. The sound production mechanism of odontocetes (toothed whales, including dolphins and porpoises) is well described, in contrast to that of mysticetes whose vocalization mechanism remains a subject of active scientific investigation. Anatomical observations and acoustic signal processing have led to divergent hypotheses under the framework of a production-based approach.

Extensive Core Microbiome in Drone-Captured Whale Blow Supports a Framework for Health Monitoring.

The pulmonary system is a common site for bacterial infections in cetaceans, but very little is known about their respiratory microbiome. We used a small, unmanned hexacopter to collect exhaled breath condensate (blow) from two geographically distinct populations of apparently healthy humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae), sampled in the Massachusetts coastal waters off Cape Cod (n = 17) and coastal waters around Vancouver Island (n = 9). Bacterial and archaeal small-subunit rRNA genes were amplified and sequenced from blow samples, including many of sparse volume, as well as seawater and o

Does sociality drive diversity and composition of airway microbiota in cetaceans?

The number of social contacts of mammals is positively correlated with the diversity of their gut microbes. There is some evidence that sociality also affects microbes in the respiratory tract. We tested whether the airway microbiota of cetacean species differ depending on the whales' level of sociality. We sampled the blow of blue (Balaenoptera musculus), grey (Eschrichtius robustus), humpback (Megaptera novaeangliae) and long-finned pilot whales (PWs) (Globicephala melas) and analysed the blow microbiota by barcode tag sequencing targeting the V4 region of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene. Molecular and zooarchaeological identification of 5000 year old whale-bone harpoons in coastal Brazil.

The hunting of large whales has shaped the lifeways of many coastal communities for millennia, yet its origins remain debated, often associated with postglacial cultures in Arctic and subarctic regions dating to approximately 3500-2500 years ago. Here, we present evidence that large baleen whales were likely hunted 5000 years ago by Indigenous groups in southern Brazil. We analysed museum collections of cetacean bones and artefacts from archaeological shellmounds, known as sambaquis, in the region of Babitonga Bay. Zooarchaeological, typological, and molecular analyses of bone remains and arte

Deep-time invention and hydrodynamic convergences through amniote flipper evolution.

The diapsid plesiosaurs were pelagic and inhabited the oceans from the Triassic to the Cretaceous. A key evolutionary character of plesiosaurs is the four wing-like flippers. While it is mostly accepted that plesiosaurs were underwater fliers like marine turtles, penguins, and maybe whales, other swimming styles have been suggested in the past. These are rowing and a combination of rowing and underwater flight (e.g., pig-nosed turtle, sea lion). Underwater fliers use lift in contrast to rowers that employ drag. For efficiently profiting of lift during underwater flying, it is necessary that pl

Escalating competition in changing seas: baleen whales exploit killer whale prey herding.

Climate change and other anthropogenic pressures are rapidly reshaping marine ecosystems, altering prey availability and predator interactions. Yet empirical evidence of how these relationships shift under changing conditions remains scarce. Drawing on over a decade of monitoring in a subarctic fjord system, we provide a rare insight into these dynamics. In northern Norway, the winter aggregation of herring (Clupea harengus) and their primary predator, the killer whale (Orcinus orca), has shifted northward under the combined influence of climate change and fishing pressure. This redistribution

Pacific Islands cetaceans: a review of strandings from 2006-2024.

We report significant pathological findings from 272 stranding investigations of 20 cetacean species in the Pacific Islands region between 2006 and 2024. Full or partial necropsies of 209 cases (76.8%) resulted in one or more diagnoses associated with death in 137 cases. Natural disease accounted for 62% of stranded animals; approximately half were in poor body condition due to chronic illness. Morbillivirus and Brucella sp. infections caused mortality in 11 species, including striped dolphins and Longman's beaked whales. Toxoplasmosis, of anthropogenic cause in Hawai'i, led to deaths of 2 spi

Influence of Solvent Lipid Extraction on Tissue-Specific Carbon Isotopes.

Cetacean blubber and skin have a high lipid content, which is depleted in 13C and 15N compared to proteins. As such, it is necessary to normalise samples for lipids prior to bulk stable isotope analysis. This is often achieved via solvent lipid removal. The direct effects of solvents used in lipid extractions on δ15N of animal tissue is a widely discussed topic in the fields of stable isotope and cetacean trophic ecology. The effects of such solvents on δ13C on the other hand, beyond the desired effect of lipid removal, have not yet been studied, although outcomes may be as unpredictable as th

An unusual case of relay pentobarbital toxicosis in a dog.

Sodium pentobarbital and phenytoin are common constituents of veterinary euthanasia solutions in the United States. Relay, or secondary, barbiturate toxicosis has been reported in carnivorous animals that have fed from the carcasses of euthanized livestock. This case report presents barbiturate toxicosis in a dog. A 2-year-old female spayed Australian shepherd presented comatose 2 h after ingesting an unknown substance on the beach. The material was retrieved from the stomach by gastric lavage and visually identified as fish or other animal tissue. The dog recovered with symptomatic and suppor

Epidermal lipid in several cetacean species: ultrastructural observations.

The ultrastructure of the skin of four cetacean species, bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) long-finned pilot whale (Globicephala melaena), humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae), and fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) was investigated with particular reference to epidermal lipid. It has already been established that massive lipid reservoirs exist in whales, that the biochemical structures of cetacean lipids are unique, and that unusual intracellular lipid droplets appear in the epidermis. We report here some novel findings on scanning electron microscopic morphology of epidermal lipid, a

Survey of selected viral agents (herpesvirus, adenovirus and hepatitis E virus) in liver and lung samples of cetaceans, Brazil.

Hepatic and pulmonary lesions are common in cetaceans, despite their poorly understood viral etiology. Herpesviruses (HV), adenoviruses (AdV) and hepatitis E virus (HEV) are emerging agents in cetaceans, associated with liver and/or pulmonary damage in mammals. We isolated and molecularly tested DNA for HV and AdV (n = 218 individuals; 187 liver and 108 lung samples) and RNA for HEV (n = 147 animals; 147 liver samples) from six cetacean families. All animals stranded or were bycaught in Brazil between 2001 and 2021. Positive-animals were analyzed by histopathology. Statistical analyses assesse

Captive bottlenose dolphins and killer whales harbor a species-specific skin microbiota that varies among individuals.

Marine animals surfaces host diverse microbial communities, which play major roles for host's health. Most inventories of marine animal surface microbiota have focused on corals and fishes, while cetaceans remain overlooked. The few studies focused on wild cetaceans, making difficult to distinguish intrinsic inter- and/or intraspecific variability in skin microbiota from environmental effects. We used high-throughput sequencing to assess the skin microbiota from 4 body zones of 8 bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and killer whales (Orcinus orca), housed in captivity (Marineland park, Fr

Detection of Brucella ceti and Brucella-Associated Disease in Stranded Cetaceans in Hawaii, USA, 2000-24.

Numerous marine mammal populations worldwide are declining because of increased anthropogenic and natural threats, including infectious disease. Brucella ceti, morbillivirus, and herpesvirus have been detected from stranded cetaceans and been recognized as pathogens that may result in considerable cetacean morbidity and mortality. Beaked whale circovirus has been reported in multiple cetacean species in Hawaii, USA, and the western Pacific Ocean, but the pathologic relevance in these species remains uncertain. We screened for the presence of Brucella in 66 cetaceans of 17 species that stranded

Tread-water feeding of Bryde's whales.

Many previous studies have shown that rorqual whales (Balaenopteridae), including the blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus), fin whale (B. physalus), sei whale (B. borealis), Bryde's whale (B. edeni), minke whale (B. acutorostrata), and humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae), employ a strategy called lunge feeding to capture a large amount of krill and/or fish for nourishment [1]. Lunge feeding entails a high energetic cost due to the drag created by an open mouth at high speeds [1,2]. In the upper Gulf of Thailand, Bryde's whales, which feed on small fish species [3], predominantly anchovies, d

Trace element concentrations and tissue distribution in cetaceans from different ecological groups in Chinese waters.

As long-lived marine predators occupying high trophic levels, cetaceans can serve as important bioindicators for assessing trace element (TE) contamination in marine ecosystems. In this study, concentrations of 12 TEs (As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cu, Li, Mn, Pb, Rb, Se, Sr, and Zn) were measured in liver and muscle tissues of six stranded cetacean species from the Fujian coast, China. Tissue-, species-, and ecological group-related differences in accumulation patterns were compared, and temporal changes of TEs in Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins from Xiamen Bay were further assessed. Most TEs occurred at hi

Techno-economic analysis of distribution system at various load models using MEWOA algorithm.

In response to the market's increasing need for electricity and the escalating technical and environmental challenges, the Power System (PS) sector has strongly emphasised the escalating technical and ecological challenges, and the PS sector has placed a strong emphasis on integrating distributed energy resources (DERs) into distribution systems (DS). However, if not allocated optimally, integrating DERs can provide various technical topics such as power quality, stability, reliability, and voltage management concerns. Therefore, creating effective and efficient optimisation techniques to solv

Inner ear development in cetaceans.

Cetaceans face the challenge of maintaining equilibrium underwater and obtaining sensory input within a dense, low-visibility medium. The cetacean ear represents a key innovation that marked their evolution from terrestrial artiodactyls to among the most fully aquatic mammals in existence. Using micro-CT and histological data, we document shape and size changes in the cetacean inner ear during ontogeny, and demonstrate that, as a proportion of gestation time, the cetacean inner ear is precocial in its growth compared with that of suid artiodactyls. Cetacean inner ears begin ossifying and reach
