Hop (Humulus lupulus L.) extract reverts glycaemic imbalance and cognitive impairment in an animal model of obesity.

The rates of overweight and obesity around the world have increased in past years. The body's adipose tissue stimulates the antioxidant and oxidation imbalance capacity at the cellular level. This scenario favors an inflammatory low-grade systemic condition starting with insulin resistance, which in turn may involve diabetes mellitus type 2 and cognitive decline afterward. Neurological diseases have been correlated to senile age diseases over time. This scenario calls for a change in the incidence of obesity in the younger generation. An unhealthy dietary consumption together with sedentary ha

In vitro evaluation of antibacterial, anticollagenase, and antioxidant activities of hop components (Humulus lupulus) addressing acne vulgaris.

Seven naturally derived components from hop plant (Humulus lupulus L.) extracts were tested for evaluation of biological activities affecting acne vulgaris. Five strains, Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus, Kocuria rhizophila and, Staphylococcus pyogenes, were selected as the main acne-causing bacteria. Hop extracts xanthohumol and the lupulones showed strong inhibitory activities against all of the strains. Although hydrogenated derivatives did not show the same level of activity, naturally occurring xanthohumol, humulones, and lupulones all showed mode

Identification and characteristics of new volatile thiols derived from the hop (Humulus luplus L.) cultivar Nelson Sauvin (dagger).

Nelson Sauvin (NS) is a unique hop cultivar that was bred and grown in New Zealand. This hop gives a specific flavor (exotic fruit-like, white wine-like) to finished beers. However, the key compounds of this flavor have not yet been identified. We have attempted to identify the specific flavor compounds derived from NS. We focused on certain volatile thiols that are well-known to contribute to wine flavors, especially Sauvignon Blanc. The product made from NS (NS product) lost its specific flavor by contact with copper. Copper is well-known as an absorber of thiols in the field of wine flavor

Viroid ecology in hops (Humulus lupulus L.): high prevalence in commercial systems but low presence in wild populations.

INTRODUCTION: Hop (Humulus lupulus L.), a vital crop in the brewing industry, is increasingly threatened by infections caused by viroids and viruses. The extensive use of vegetative propagation in hop cultivation facilitates the accumulation and dissemination of these pathogens. However, little is known about their prevalence and ecological behavior in non-commercial settings. This study provides a comprehensive overview of viroid and virus infections across Germany, with particular attention to their occurrence and potential transmission across commercial, settlement, and wild hop populations

Genome-wide analysis of transposable elements and satellite DNA in Humulus scandens, a dioecious plant with XX/XY1Y2 chromosomes.

Transposable elements (TEs) and satellite DNAs, two major categories of repetitive sequences, are expected to accumulate in non-recombining genome regions, including sex-linked regions, and contribute to sex chromosome evolution. The dioecious plant, Humulus scandens, can be used for studying the evolution of the XX/XY1Y2 sex chromosomes. In this study, we thoroughly examined the repetitive components of male and female H. scandens using next-generation sequencing data followed by bioinformatics analysis and florescence in situ hybridization (FISH). The H. scandens genome has a high overall re

Nanofibrous ε-Polycaprolactone Matrices Containing Nano-Hydroxyapatite and Humulus lupulus L. Extract: Physicochemical and Biological Characterization for Oral Applications.

Oral bone defects occur as a result of trauma, cancer, infections, periodontal diseases, and caries. Autogenic and allogenic grafts are the gold standard used to treat and regenerate damaged or defective bone segments. However, these materials do not possess the antimicrobial properties necessary to inhibit the invasion of the numerous deleterious pathogens present in the oral microbiota. In the present study, poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAp), and a commercial extract of Humulus lupulus L. The hops (Humulus lupulus) genome contains a mid-sized terpene synthase family that shows wide functional and allelic diversity.

BACKGROUND: Hops (Humulus lupulus L.) are a dioecious climbing perennial, with the dried mature "cones" (strobili) of the pistillate/female inflorescences being widely used as both a bittering agent and to enhance the flavour of beer. The glandular trichomes of the bract and bracteole flowering structures of the cones produce an abundance of secondary metabolites, such as terpenoids, bitter acids and prenylated phenolics depending on plant genetics, developmental stage and environment. More knowledge is required on the functional and allelic diversity of terpene synthase (TPS) genes responsibl

Influence of Sucrose and Immersion Time on Humulus lupulus L., cv Columbus, Plantlet In Vitro Proliferation and Potentially Bioactive Compound Content.

(1) Background: Traditionally, hop is propagated using rhizome fragments or herbaceous stem cuttings. Micropropagation, therefore, offers a viable alternative for the large-scale production of healthy, genetically uniform plants, regardless of the season and within confined spaces. A temporary immersion system (TIS) facilitates plant propagation by alternating immersions of microcuttings in liquid culture medium with dry periods, preventing gas accumulation through forced ventilation.
