Cerebrospinal fluid hydrodynamic studies in children.

CSF-hydrodynamic investigation using the constant pressure infusion method was used in children. The CSF resting pressure was recorded and the CSF formation rate was measured. The conductance of the CSF outflow pathways and the pressure in the sagittal sinus were calculated. The method was used in children with suspicion of disturbed CSF hydrodynamics due to various neurological and other conditions. The method is applicable in paediatric neurological diagnostics and provides information for further understanding of the mechanisms behind cranial hypertension. The following mean values are offe

Hydrodynamically Controlled Active Escape Dynamics.

Escape of many active systems over potential barriers is subject to hydrodynamic interactions, but little is known about the active hydrodynamics in such nonequilibrium escape processes. Here, we combine simulations and theoretical analysis to examine how the hydrodynamics impacts the physics controlling escape dynamics of active particles, based on a model system comprising active particles confined in macromolecular networks. We find that the hydrodynamic effect critically mediates the escape dynamics of active particles, manifesting as hydrodynamics-induced active rotation of the particle a

Establishment of a hydrodynamic delivery system in ducks.

Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) poses a significant global health challenge as it can lead to acute or chronic liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). To establish a safety experimental model, a homolog of HBV-duck HBV (DHBV) is often used for HBV research. Hydrodynamic-based gene delivery (HGD) is an efficient method to introduce exogenous genes into the liver, making it suitable for basic research. In this study, a duck HGD system was first constructed by injecting the reporter plasmid pLIVE-SEAP via the ankle vein. The highest expression of SEAP occurred when ducks were injected w

Hydrodynamic Injection for Developing NASH Model.

The hydrodynamic tail vein injection (HTVi) is a technique that is used to deliver plasmid genes into live mice or rats. The HTVi leads to the in vivo transfection of exogenous DNA primarily in the liver, serving as a reliable approach of establishing animal models for the study of liver diseases. The nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is liver inflammation and damage resulting from an accumulation of fat in the liver. With the rising prevalence of obesity worldwide, NASH is becoming an increasingly common health problem. The pathogenesis of NASH is a multi-step process involving complicated

Retarded hydrodynamic properties of fractal clusters.

Fractal clusters are commonly encountered when working with the stability and the aggregation of colloidal suspensions. In spite of the number of studies that have focused on their stationary hydrodynamic properties, no information is currently known on their retarded hydrodynamic properties. The objective of this work is to close this gap. Clusters with a broad range of fractal dimension values, generated via Monte-Carlo simulations have been analyzed. A rigorous model based on multipole expansion of time-dependent Stokes equations has been developed, and then the full cluster resistance matr

Generalized Hydrodynamics of Bloch Oscillations in the Absence of a Lattice.

Objects subjected to a constant force generally increase their velocity over time. This expectation fails whenever their energy is a smooth and periodic function of momentum, resulting in periodic Bloch oscillations instead. Periodic dispersions, typical of lattice systems, can also emerge in continuum media through strong interactions. Here, we study the phenomenon of such Bloch oscillations in the absence of a lattice in a paradigmatic model of integrable quantum gases: the two-component Yang-Gaudin model. We derive a generalized-hydrodynamic theory of Bloch oscillations for a finite density

A Computational Study on the Hydrodynamics of Bio-Inspired Quadrupedal Paddling.

Due to its exceptional terrain mobility, quadrupedal locomotion has been used in the design of many amphibious robots for broad applications including resource exploration, disaster rescue, and reconnaissance. In this work, swimming of a quadrupedal paddling model is considered, and the effects of the legs' initial swing angle, swing amplitude, and power phase duration are numerically investigated through three paddling gaits, namely, the trotting gait, the diagonal, and the lateral sequence gaits. Three different modes for drag-based thrust generation, the "Trotting Mode", the "Hindering Mode

The hydrodynamics and kinematics of the appendicularian tail underpin peristaltic pumping.

Planktonic organisms feed while suspended in water using various hydrodynamic pumping strategies. Appendicularians are a unique group of plankton that use their tail to pump water over mucous mesh filters to concentrate food particles. As ubiquitous and often abundant members of planktonic ecosystems, they play a major role in oceanic food webs. Yet, we lack a complete understanding of the fluid flow that underpins their filtration. Using high-speed, high-resolution video and micro particle image velocimetry, we describe the kinematics and hydrodynamics of the tail in Oikopleura dioica in filt

Effects of Flow Hydrodynamics and Eye Movements on Intraocular Drug Clearance.

New in vitro prototypes (PK-Eye™) were tested with and without eye movement to understand diffusion and convection effects on intraocular clearance. Port placement in front ((i) ciliary inflow model) and behind the model lens ((ii) posterior inflow model) was used to study bevacizumab (1.25 mg/50 µL) and dexamethasone (0.1 mg/100 µL) in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS, pH 7.4) and simulated vitreal fluid (SVF). Dexamethasone was studied in a (iii) retinal-choroid-sclera (RCS) outflow model (with ciliary inflow and two outflow pathways). Ciliary vs. posterior inflow placement did not affect the

Cerebrospinal Fluid Homeostasis and Hydrodynamics: A Review of Facts and Theories.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: According to the classical hypothesis, the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is actively secreted inside the brain's ventricular system, predominantly by the choroid plexuses, before flowing unidirectionally in a cranio-caudal orientation toward the arachnoid granulations (AGs), where it is reabsorbed into the dural venous sinuses. This concept has been accepted as a doctrine for more than 100 years and was subjected only to minor modifications. Its inability to provide an adequate explanation to questions arising from the everyday clinical practice, in addition to the ever gro

Oral cavity hydrodynamics and drag production in Balaenid whale suspension feeding.

Balaenid whales feed on large aggregates of small and slow-moving prey (predominantly copepods) through a filtration process enabled by baleen. These whales exhibit continuous filtration, namely, with the mouth kept partially opened and the baleen exposed to oncoming prey-laden waters while fluking. The process is an example of crossflow filtration (CFF) in which most of the particulates (prey) are separated from the substrate (water) without ever coming into contact with the filtering surface (baleen). This paper discusses the simulation of baleen filtration hydrodynamics based on a type of h

Diffusion with conserved marginal distributions and information theory in fracton hydrodynamics.

Diffusion with multipole-moment conservation gives rise to transport laws that generalize Fick's law and has attracted growing attention following experimental advances in strongly tilted optical lattices. It was recently shown that conserving complete multipole-moment groups leads to subdiffusive dynamics governed by a nonlinear diffusion equation, raising the question of whether hydrodynamic equations would also be nonlinear when the conservation law is imposed only at the subsystem level. Here we show that subsystem symmetries generically produce nonlinear hydrodynamic equations with shear-

Directional Pore Size-Mediated Blood Hydrodynamics Govern Hemostasis in Cellulose Sponges.

Uncontrolled bleeding remains a major clinical challenge in trauma and surgical care, requiring hemostatic materials that combine rapid blood absorption with efficient clot formation. However, the interplay between fluid dynamics and coagulation within porous architectures is still underexplored. Herein, a cellulose-based hemostatic sponge featuring directionally aligned channels with tunable pore sizes is reported, enabling precise modulation of blood hydrodynamics at the wound interface. By integrating in vitro coagulation assays and in vivo hemostasis models, we reveal a strong dependence o

Cerebrospinal Fluid Hydrodynamics in Chiari I Malformation and Syringomyelia: Modeling Pathophysiology.

Anatomic MRI, MRI flow studies, and intraoperative ultrasonography demonstrate that the Chiari I malformation obstructs CSF pathways at the foramen magnum and prevents normal CSF movement through the foramen magnum. Impaired CSF displacement across the foramen magnum during the cardiac cycle increases pulsatile hindbrain motion, pressure transmission to the spinal subarachnoid space, and the amplitude of CSF subarachnoid pressure waves driving CSF into the spinal cord. Central canal septations in adults prevent syrinx formation by CSF directly transmitting its pressure wave from the fourth ven

Evaporation-induced hydrodynamics promote conjugation-mediated plasmid transfer in microbial populations.

Conjugative plasmids bestow important traits to microbial communities, such as virulence, antibiotic resistance, pollutant biotransformation, and biotechnology-relevant functions. While the biological mechanisms and determinants of plasmid conjugation are well established, the underlying physical and ecological driving forces remain unclear. Microbial communities often inhabit unsaturated environments, such as soils and host surfaces (e.g., skin, teeth, leaves, roots), where water evaporation and associated small-scale hydrodynamic processes frequently occur at numerous air-water and solid-wat

Time-dependent correlations in a supercooled liquid from nonlinear fluctuating hydrodynamics.

We solve numerically the equations of nonlinear fluctuating hydrodynamics (NFH). A coarse graining of the density field is applied at each time step to avoid instabilities which otherwise plague the algorithm at long times. The equilibrium correlation of the density fluctuations at different times obtained directly from the solutions of the NFH equations are shown here to be in quantitative agreement with corresponding molecular dynamics simulation data. Low-order perturbative treatment of the these NFH equations obtains the mode coupling model. The latter has been widely studied for understan

Morphological models of radiate accretive growth and the influence of hydrodynamics.

In many marine sessile organisms (for example sponges and stony corals) the skeleton is formed by an accretive growth process, where layers of material are secreted on top of each other in a surface normal deposition process. In many of these organisms the growth process exhibits a strong morphological plasticity due to differences in exposure to water movement. In general, many of these organisms tend to form thin-branching growth forms under sheltered conditions, while the growth form gradually transforms into a more compact shape when the exposure of water movement increases. In this paper,

Superior hydrodynamics of a modified cavopulmonary connection for the Norwood operation.

BACKGROUND: In the Fontan circulation, energy consumption at the cavopulmonary connection is crucial. Our hypothesis was that a modification of the standard Norwood variant of cavopulmonary connection with an extended anastomosis would improve hydrodynamics. METHODS: The in vitro hydrodynamics of two different Perspex glass models resembling the Norwood variant of cavopulmonary connection (model I) and the modification (model II) were analyzed in a mock circulation at nonpulsatile flows of 2 to 5 L/min to simulate rest and exercise. The pulmonary flow split was varied to imitate varying lung
