Hydrogen bonds in methane-water clusters.

Characterization of hydrogen bonds in CH4-(H2O)12 clusters was carried out by using several quantum chemistry tools. An initial stochastic search provided around 2 500 000 candidate structures, then, using a convex-hull polygon criterion followed by gradient based optimization under the Kohn-Sham scheme, a total of 54 well defined local minima were located in the Potential Energy Surface. These structures were further analyzed through second-order many-body perturbation theory with an extended basis set at the MP2/6-311++G(d,p) level. Our analysis of Gibbs energies at several temperatures clea

Exploring the Competition between Halogen Bonding and CH Hydrogen Bonding in Bromoarenes Using an Aryldiyne Template.

Hydrogens connected to benzene rings functionalized with electron-withdrawing groups are found to provide attractions with electron donors that are competitive with the halogen bond attraction to bromines on the same rings. An aryldiyne bridge that adequately templates this CH hydrogen bonding, along with the competing halogen bonding, provides an experimental pathway for looking at these interactions in a systematic way. Calculations using the M06-2x/6-311+G-(2d,p) density functional and basis set, along with mapping of the molecular electrostatic potentials using B3LYP/6-311++G**, support th

Naming Matters: Hydridic Hydrogen Atoms are Halogen, Chalcogen, and Pnictogen Bond Acceptors not "Hydridic Hydrogen Bond" Donors.

The definition and classification of noncovalent interactions are essential for consistent communication in supramolecular chemistry. A recent paper introduced the term "hydridic hydrogen bond" to describe interactions where hydrogen atoms bound to electropositive elements (e.g., Si, Ge, Sn) act as electron donors. However, such terminology conflicts with IUPAC definition, which requires hydrogen to be bonded to more electronegative atoms for a hydrogen bond (HB). Herein, we combine electrostatic potential analysis, energy decomposition, ELF/QTAIM, and NBO calculations to show that interaction

Unveiling Guest Structure and Hydrogen Bonding in Cyclohexanemethanol Clathrate Hydrates.

Clathrate hydrates are crystalline inclusion compounds traditionally described as host-guest systems stabilized predominantly by van der Waals interactions. Recent studies, however, have shown that polar guest molecules can engage in weak and transient hydrogen bonding with the hydrate water framework, challenging this classical picture. Here, we report cyclohexanemethanol as a new structure H hydrate former in a binary system with methane and elucidate its guest-host interaction behavior at the molecular level. 13C NMR spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction confirm the

Flexible receptor architectures for anion recognition via ionic hydrogen bonding.

Phosphate anions play key roles in biology, chemistry, the environment, and are important industrial raw materials. However, their recognition, binding, and sensing in water are complicated by their structural diversity, multiple protonation states, and strong hydration. Well-pre-organized macrocyclic receptors are used to increase selectivity and affinity by reducing the entropy associated with the adaptation of the receptor to the phosphate guests. However, the synthesis and purification of macrocyclic sensors is difficult, marred by low yields. Linear (non-macrocyclic) receptors and sensors

Secondary-sphere hydrogen bonding promotes catalytic nitrate reduction at iron.

Nitrate ( NO 3 - ) is a groundwater pollutant that is challenging to remediate. Here we report a bioinspired strategy to enhance nitrate binding and reduction through a network of secondary-sphere hydrogen-bonding interactions within a ligand scaffold. Using a series of redox-inactive Zn(II) complexes based on the tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine ligand, we demonstrate that ligand variants bearing appended aniline hydrogen-bond donors exhibit up to seven orders of magnitude higher binding affinity for NO 3 - compared to analogues lacking such interactions. These hydrogen bonds induce substanti

Nicotine molecularly imprinted polymer: synergy of coordination and hydrogen bonding.

Two new bis(2,2'-bithienyl)methane derivatives, one with the zinc phthalocyanine substituent (ZnPc-S16) and the other with the 2-hydroxyethyl substituent (EtOH-S4), were synthesized to serve as functional monomers for biomimetic recognition of nicotine (Nic) by molecular imprinting. Formation of a pre-polymerization complex of the Nic template with ZnPc-S16 and EtOH-S4 was confirmed by both the high negative Gibbs free energy gain, ΔG = -115.95 kJ/mol, calculated using the density functional theory at the B3LYP/3-21G* level, and the high stability constant, Ks = 4.67 × 10(5) M(-1), determined

Ions and hydrogen bonding in a hydrophobic environment: CCl(4).

It is generally expected that ions in an aqueous ionic solution in contact with a hydrophobic phase enter the hydrophobic phase accompanied by a hydration shell. This expectation suggests that the ion mole fraction in the hydrophobic phase is less than, or at most, equal to that of water. Both gravimetric and spectroscopic evidence shows that for a model hydrophobic phase, carbon tetrachloride, this is not the case: In contact with a 1 M simple salt solution (sodium or potassium halide), the salt concentration in carbon tetrachloride ranges from 1.4 to nearly 3 times that of water. Infrared sp

The nature of improper, blue-shifting hydrogen bonding verified experimentally.

In the infrared spectra of solutions in liquid argon of dimethyl ether ((CH(3))(2)O) and fluoroform (HCF(3)), bands due to a 1:1 complex between these monomers have been observed. The C-H stretch of the HCF(3) moiety in the complex appears 17.7 cm(-1) above that in the monomer, and its intensity decreases by a factor of 11(2). These characteristics situate the interaction between the monomers in the realm of improper, blue-shifting hydrogen bonding. The complexation shifts the C-F stretches downward by some 9 cm(-1), while the C-H stretches in (CH(3))(2)O are shifted upward by 9-15 cm(-1), and

Positive and Negative Impacts of Interfacial Hydrogen Bonds on Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution.

Understanding the behavior of water molecules at solid-liquid interfaces is crucial for various applications such as photocatalytic water splitting, a key technology for sustainable fuel production and chemical transformations. Despite extensive studies conducted in the past, the impact of the microscopic structure of interfacial water molecules on photocatalytic reactivity has not been directly examined. In this study, using real-time mass spectrometry and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, we demonstrated the crucial role of hydrogen bond (H-bond) networks on the photocatalytic hydroge

Modulating Supramolecular Topology via Hydrogen Bonding in a Eumelanin Monomer.

Eumelanin is a bio-pigment with remarkable photoprotective properties, whose function is tied to its complex supramolecular organization. Although hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions are recognized as key forces in shaping its architecture, their individual contributions remain poorly defined. Among its molecular precursors, the canonical monomer 5,6-dihydroxyindole (DHI) is notable for forming extensive hydrogen-bonded networks that stabilize supramolecular assemblies. To clarify how hydrogen bonding influences supramolecular topology in eumelanin precursors, we investigate selectively meth

Cooperative intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bonding in scaffolded squaramide arrays.

The structural, self-assembly and binding properties of oligo-(phenylene-ethynylene) (OPE) rigid rods linked to squaramides (SQs) have been studied and correlated with rod length. In the solid-state, OPE-SQ conjugates form indefinite arrays of head-to-tail hydrogen bonded SQs, arrays that include both intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bonds. In dichloromethane solution, intramolecularly hydrogen bonded SQ chains show cooperative polarisation, an effect that increases with OPE-SQ length. Appending powerful hydrogen bonding groups to the OPE-SQ termini further increases this intramolecular pola

Terminal repeats impact collagen triple-helix stability through hydrogen bonding.

Nearly 30% of human proteins have tandem repeating sequences. Structural understanding of the terminal repeats is well-established for many repeat proteins with the common α-helix and β-sheet foldings. By contrast, the sequence-structure interplay of the terminal repeats of the collagen triple-helix remains to be fully explored. As the most abundant human repeat protein and the most prevalent structural component of the extracellular matrix, collagen features a hallmark triple-helix formed by three supercoiled polypeptide chains of long repeating sequences of the Gly-X-Y triplets. Here, with C

Quadruple Hydrogen Bonding Supramolecular Elastomers for Melt Extrusion Additive Manufacturing.

This manuscript describes the versatility of highly directional, noncovalent interactions, i.e., quadruple hydrogen bonding (QHB), to afford novel polyurea segmented supramolecular polymers for melt extrusion three-dimensional (3D) printing processes. The molecular design of the polyurea elastomers features (1) flexible polyether segments and relatively weak urea hydrogen-bonding sites in the soft segments to provide elasticity and toughness, and (2) strong ureido-cytosine (UCyt) QHB in the hard segments to impart enhanced mechanical integrity. The resulting polyureas were readily compression-

Hydrogen Bonding between Water and Tetrahydrofuran Relevant to Clathrate Formation.

Tetrahydrofuran (THF) is well-known as a clathrate former as well as a promoter for gas hydrate formation. This work examines interactions between water and tetrahydrofuran via the effect on water's vibrational spectrum. Due to water's large oscillator strength in the hydrogen-bonded region, interactions are diagnosed by isolating small clusters in a transparent medium (carbon tetrachloride in this study). A weak THF/water hydrogen bond is reflected by a 3450 cm(-1) OH-donor vibration (blue shifted from the water/water hydrogen bond) and a 3685 cm(-1) nonbonded OH stretch (blue shifted 22 cm(-

A polymorph of butobarbital with two distinct hydrogen-bonding motifs.

N-H...O bonding in a form of 5-butyl-5-ethylbarbituric acid (systematic name: 5-butyl-5-ethyl-1,3-diazinane-2,4,6-trione), C10H16N2O3, produces two distinct one-dimensional motifs, viz. tape and ladder. Both are different from the ribbon chain motif observed in two previously reported polymorphs of the same compound.

Femtosecond pump-probe measurements of solvation by hydrogen-bonding interactions.

An additional ultrafast blue shift in the transient absorption spectra of hydrogen-bonding complexes of a strong photoacid, 8-hydroxypyrene 1,3,6-trisdimethylsulfonamide (HPTA), over the solvation response of the uncomplexed HPTA and also over that of the methoxy derivative of the photoacid (MPTA) in the presence of the hydrogen-bonding base was observed on optical excitation of the photoacid. The additional 55 +/- 10 fs solvation response was found to be about 35 % and 19% of the total C(t) of HPTA in dichloromethane (DCM) when it was hydrogen-bonded to dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and dioxane, r

Hydrogen Transfer-Driven Photocatalysis in a Hydrogen-Bonded Melamine-Barbiturate Assembly.

Photogeneration of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by supramolecular assemblies based on hydrogen bonds is of considerable interest as an alternative to metal-containing photocatalysts. In this work, the mechanisms of ROS and radical generation in melamine barbiturate (MB) crystals are investigated. Using EPR spectroscopy, it was shown that UV irradiation (360 nm) induces the formation of singlet oxygen (1O2) with a steady-state concentration of (1.2 ± 0.3) × 10-14 M, while radical formation in the visible region did not exceed the experimental background within the detection limits. Hydrogen Bond Interaction Networks in the Mixed Pentamers of Hydrogen Sulfide and Water.

The observation of gas-phase water clusters has been instrumental in understanding water aggregation and cooperativity, paving the way for solvation models in the bulk. However, the characterization of hydrogen sulfide self-aggregation is still largely unexplored. Here, we investigate two mixed pentamers of hydrogen sulfide and water to examine the influence of the weaker, dispersion-based and less directional interactions caused by hydrogen sulfide. Unprecedented structural resolution was obtained by combination of jet-cooled broadband rotational spectroscopy and quantum-chemical calculations
