Thermal CO2 hydrogenation connects carbon-oxide recycling with low-carbon H2 use and established product families, including CO, methanol, methane and C2+ hydrocarbons. The design problem is that the selective catalyst is often not the ideal surface used at the start of a calculation. H2/CO2/CO/H2O feeds can redistribute phases, interfaces, adsorbates and promoter environments during measurement. First-principles descriptor maps and microkinetic models remain essential once candidate states are specified, but they cannot decide which states should enter the comparison. This Review asks how suc

A metal-free transfer hydrogenation of nonactivated difluoroalkenes using Hantzsch ester as the hydrogen donor and sodium tert-butoxide as the base is reported. This method provides efficient access to a variety of difluoromethylated compounds under mild conditions without the need for transition metal catalysts or molecular hydrogen. The reaction exhibits a broad substrate scope, tolerating electron-donating and -withdrawing groups, as well as heterocyclic, nitro, and cyano functionalities. Mechanistic studies suggest that the reaction proceeds via base-mediated enolization and olefin migrati

Catalytic carbon dioxide (CO2) hydrogenation is a potential route for producing sustainable fuels and chemicals, but existing catalysts need improvement. In particular, identifying active sites and understanding the interaction between components and the dynamic behavior of the participant species remain unclear. This fundamental knowledge is essential for the design of more efficient and stable catalysts. Because the nature of the active site (metal, oxide, carbide) is the main factor that determines the catalytic activity of the catalysts, this Review focuses on various types of heterogeneou

The CuZnOAl2O3 catalyst shows excellent activity and selectivity in the reaction of CO2 hydrogenation to methanol as a consequence of its controllable physicochemical properties, which is expected to offer an efficient route to renewable energy. In this study, CuZnOAl2O3 catalysts are engineered by a special pretreatment, constructing a carbonate structure on the surface of the catalyst. Compared to the unmodified catalyst, the optimized catalyst (CZA-H-C1) not only exhibits an improved methanol selectivity of 62.5% (250 °C and 3 MPa) but also retains a minimal degree of deactivation of 9.57%

Hydrogenation of CO2 to valuable products is an attractive method to mitigate the greenhouse effect. Palladium-zinc-based nanomaterials are stable and selective catalysts in the methanol formation process. For a better understanding of the catalytic reaction mechanisms, here, we investigate hydrogen activation and carbon dioxide hydrogenation on Pd x Zn x (x = 2-4) and Pd6 clusters using systematic density functional theory analysis, selected on the basis of high-level benchmarks. We show that alloying palladium with zinc makes the H2 adsorption and dissociation less favored and increases the

Asymmetric hydrogenation of diaryl ketones is challenging, particularly when the two aromatic rings have very similar steric hindrances, such as those in para-substituted diaryl ketones. In this study, we developed a catalyst that can distinguish between para-hydroxyl phenyl and other para-substituted aryl rings in diaryl ketones. Using this catalyst, a variety of chiral diarylcarbinols were synthesized with high yield and high enantioselectivity. DFT studies revealed that noncovalent interactions such as π-π stacking and C-H···π interactions between the substrate and catalyst play a crucial r

The limited surface coverage and activity of active hydrides on oxide surfaces pose challenges for efficient hydrogenation reactions. Herein, we quantitatively distinguish the long-puzzling homolytic dissociation of hydrogen from the heterolytic pathway on Ga2O3, that is useful for enhancing hydrogenation ability of oxides. By combining transient kinetic analysis with infrared and mass spectroscopies, we identify the catalytic role of coordinatively unsaturated Ga3+ in homolytic H2 dissociation, which is formed in-situ during the initial heterolytic dissociation. This site facilitates easy hyd

Electrocatalytic hydrogenations (ECH) enable the reduction of organic substrates upon usage of electric current and present a sustainable alternative to conventional processes if green electricity is used. Opposed to most current protocols for electrode preparation, this work presents a one-step binder- and additive-free production of silver- and copper-electroplated electrodes. Controlled adjustment of the preparation parameters allows for the tuning of catalyst morphology and its electrochemical properties. Upon optimization of the deposition protocol and carbon support, high faradaic effici

Herein, we synthesized new manganese(I) complexes coordinated with the tetradentate ligand PNNP. The complexes show higher activity and excellent substituent tolerance in contrast to their manganese counterparts and are applicable in the hydrogenation of a wide range of aromatic, aliphatic and heterocyclic ketones to their corresponding alcohols.

The efficient preparation of long-chain amines via a one-step transfer-hydrogenation/reductive-amination reaction (THRA) of polyenals has been achieved. This strategy, which combines transfer hydrogenation and reductive amination, significantly enhances the synthetic efficiency of amino compounds. Additionally, this protocol offers a practical method for carbon-chain elongation/amination to construct long-chain amino compounds. The reaction system exhibits remarkable versatility in substrate scope using a non-noble ruthenium catalyst with formate and isopropanol as hydrogen sources, making it

Selective hydrogenation plays an important role in the chemical industry and has a wide range of applications, including the production of fine chemicals and petrochemicals, pharmaceutical synthesis, healthcare product development, and the synthesis of agrochemicals. Pd-based catalysts have been widely applied for selective hydrogenation due to their unique electronic structure and ability to adsorb and activate hydrogen and unsaturated substrates. However, the exclusive and comprehensive summarization of the size, composition, and surface and interface effect of metal Pd on the performance fo

Asymmetric hydrogenation is one of the most powerful methods for the preparation of single enantiomer compounds. However, the chemo- and enantioselective hydrogenation of the relatively inert unsaturated group in substrates possessing multiple unsaturated bonds remains a challenge. We herein report a protocol for the highly chemo- and enantioselective hydrogenation of conjugated enynes while keeping the alkynyl bond intact. Mechanism studies indicate that the accompanying Zn2+ generated from zinc reduction of the CoII complex plays a critical role to initiate a plausible CoI /CoIII catalytic c

Rh/Al2O3 can be used as an effective chemo-selective reductive catalyst that combines the mild conditions of catalytic hydrogenation with high selectivity for azide moieties in the presence of other hydrogenolysis labile groups such as benzyl and benzyloxycarbonyl functionalities. The practicality of this strategy is exemplified with a range of azide-containing carbohydrate and amino acid derivatives.

Size and phase composition of the Pd-P catalyst, which is highly active in the hydrogenation of unsaturated compounds have been established using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis, high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) technique in combination with energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) analysis. The reduction of Pd(acac)₂ with hydrogen in the presence of white phosphorus (P/Pd = 0.3) in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) at 80 °C results in formation of Pd-enriched polycrystalline nanoparticles with a predominant diameter of 5.7

Substituent effects have been used to probe the characteristics of the transition state to hydrogenation of alkyl groups on the Pt(111) surface. Eight different alkyl and fluoroalkyl groups have been formed on the Pt(111) surface by dissociative adsorption of their respective alkyl and fluoroalkyl iodides. Coadsorption of hydrogen and alkyl groups, followed by heating of the surface, results in hydrogenation of the alkyl groups to form alkanes, which then desorb into the gas phase. Temperature-programmed reaction spectroscopy was used to measure the barriers to hydrogenation, DeltaE(H)(double

Heterogeneous frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) have emerged as an effective strategy to transform catalytically inert supports into active sites for hydrogenation reactions. However, the practical application of FLP sites remains limited due to their random spatial distribution and limited capacity to activate H2. To address these challenges, we report the rational design of a highly effective FLP-based catalyst by anchoring isolated Rh atoms onto CeO2, achieving a hydrogenation rate of 35%/h for styrene, remarkably outperforming pristine CeO2 (2.74%/h). It is found that Rh species on CeO2 form i

This paper describes the synthesis, characterization and application in hydrogenation catalysis of triphenylphosphine-stabilized palladium and rhodium species on SBA-15. The materials were achieved by synthesizing a triethoxysilyl-functionalized triphenylphosphine ligand through the reaction of (2-chloromethylphenyl)diphenylphosphine and (3-mercaptopropyl)triethoxysilane. Treatment of this ligand with the appropriate palladium(II) and rhodium(I) complexes produced the corresponding transition metal complexes, which were then immobilized on the support material. The final catalysts were obtaine

Fluorinated (hetero)cyclic compounds have garnered attention over the years, offering key building blocks in medicinally relevant molecules. However, the synthesis of fluorinated tetrahydrofurans remains a synthetic challenge to reach. Herein, we developed an efficient and robust approach for the synthesis of cis-(ethoxycarbonyl)difluoromethylated tetrahydrofurans. Using the inexpensive Pd/C catalyst, the diastereoselective hydrogenation of functionalized CF2CO2Et-containing furans was achieved under mild reaction conditions. Access to unprecedented cis-fluorinated tetrahydrofurans with isolat

In this article, we report that Milstein's ruthenium-pincer catalyst for ester hydrogenation, previously shown to convert to a highly active form through release of ethane, is also moderately active in its original form prior to ethane release, provided an alcohol cocatalyst is present. We describe a detailed experimental and computational study of ester hydrogenation catalyzed by the catalyst's original form. The reaction rate is first-order in ester and ruthenium catalyst, zero-order in hydrogen, and exhibits a saturation dependence on the concentration of the product alcohol. We establish t

ConspectusMetal hydride (M-H) complexes have garnered widespread attention in the synthesis of fine chemicals, materials, agrochemicals, and pharmaceuticals owing to the remarkable reactivity of the M-H bonds. Specifically, M-H complexes are active intermediates that catalyze hydrogen-transfer reactions, leading to efficient hydrogenation and hydrofunctionalization of C═C/C═X (X = O or N) bonds in unsaturated organic substrates for the formation of new carbon-hydrogen, carbon-carbon, and carbon-heteroatom bonds. Our research group has long studied M-H transformation mechanisms, with significant
